the proclamations of the M44 honour society? Wed, 22 January 2014 21:18
Comrades,
I just saw an old post about someone not following through on an agreed rematch being against the "proclamations of the M44 honour society." As vets of M44 online, what would you say comprise these proclamations or principles of M44 honour?

Days of Wonder for their ignoring, in my opinion their duty to update and keep the game fresh. The last update was in the days of black and white TV it seems.

I think he's talking about the agreements of honor between players...

I would say that some basic rules of honor would be:

1) Play a rematch (from the other side) if you say that you will. If you don't have time to play a rematch, make that clear from the start.

2) Take the Underdog side if you can't play a rematch.

3) Be polite during the game. No swearing at or insulting the other player is needed in the chat box.

4) Be a gracious winner and loser.

Anyone have something else to add? Razz

Yes, Rasmussen81, that's what I was asking for. And what is best to do if I lose connection and can't get back to the game at all? Send a private message of apology? or is there something else?

A PM is fine.
And maybe invite the player to play the game again at a later date.

The "M44 honour society" is I think my coining in relation to people getting upset about other people not offering a rematch

I don't believe people should have any right to expect their opponent to give a rematch. Most people who play this game after all neither post nor read these forums, and I think it is not helpful or healthy to expect them to.

If you want a rematch, then agree to that before you play the first game. If not, then don't play in the first place.

If your oppponent agrees to two games and then backs out, then yes I would consider putting them on ignore.

Otherwise there are plenty of reasons why you might want to play only one side of a scenario.

The obvious, and probably reprehensible one, is because you want to play the favoured side and win all the time.

There are others however:

1) I am chasing promotion and I need to win this scenario from both sides, and I already have one.

Usually the one you have first will be the easy one, the hardest scenarios balance 80:20.

Which means on average you would need to play the unfavoured side 5 times to get a win; it may be longer, if it is you do not want to be playing the same scenario multiple times on the easy side.

Given that you are chosing to play the disadvantaged side I don't think this is a problem

2) You are chasing achievments like Advanced Historian, which is in any case virtually impossible even without rematches

3) You have a limited ammount of time for a big scenario

4) For any scenario that is 45-55% player skill and luck will matter more than what side you take anyway
