Online ways and online communities for playing M44 Sat, 25 January 2014 16:02
Would one of the vets in our community be willing to give an overview on the different ways (DOW, VASSAL, etc) and communities that exist for playing M44 online? A few comments on what you've found to be more accessible, reliable, enjoyable?
Thanks, comrades!

Here is a basic overview:

M44 Online - Official and run by DoW. Rules are enforced for you and it's smooth and beautiful. Official scenarios are limited to the maps they have programed but lots of Scenarios From The Front also work. Costs money to play because you have to buy Gold Ingots, or you can play 2 scenarios for free. You can play against an AI or live online against other people. Achievements and ranking is available.

Vassal - free to play but you have to learn the system a little more. Lots of people are willing to teach you how to use it. Rules are not enforced for you, so you MUST know how to play Memoir '44 already. You can play online or 'by mail' (I believe) and you can play any scenario someone has put into the system.

I hope this helps a little. Others can add more detail if I forgot something. Cool

Vassal players, such as myself, tend to be more conversational and the Chat Window is a big portion of the experience. Many of us often use SKYPE when playing so you actually have a real time conversation. You may discuss rules before making a play. If you opponent is willing, you can usually change your mind after the play of a card or movement because it's about having fun. You can actually rewind a whole set of plays during the game. In some ways it is more like actually playing a board game. if it wasn't for Vassal, I would not have been able to play the Campaign books with my mates who live all over the world. I am so appreciative of DOW and Eric for allowing the continued use of this system even when they brought on their own electronic version.

In Memoir'44 ONLINE if you intentionally or unintentionally do something [click or misclick] it is done (the machinery gives no mulligans despite your best intentions). However, If you want a quick game this is often the best route to go.
I grew up on the Vassal experience and yet I play both systems and enjoy both. They both have their benefits and drawbacks.

The dice are unfortunately about the same in both versions. Laughing

Stevens and Rasmussen81, that is great help! Sorry I'm so uninformed about how this all works...

I've seen Steam mentioned, is that another way to play the official M44 Online version?

No problem at all. Steam is just another way of playing Online, but it's the exact same game experience. Have fun!
