> 06:00 in California
> 09:00 in New York
> 14:00 in London

Make sure you have the latest version of Vassal as well as the Memoir Modules installed before game time. I cannot stress this enough !!!
Vassal just upgraded to 3.2.11 !!! Upgeade your version. Also look out for messages about new versions of the Memoir modules (they tend to come closely after new Vassal versions)

Subscribe in this thread if you want to participate. Keep subscribing even if the game is full. If we have enough players, we could even have 2 games going at the same time.

And what scenario will we play?

I'm in. Wim, thanks for picking my scenario to play. I also have 'Counterattack at Carentan' as an Overlord scenario. It plays as well as 'Push to the Roer' and 'Crossing the Volturno Line'. I really think everyone would enjoy it at some future date. I did make up a couple of new units for it, the German assault gun and the special force SWA. Take a look at it and see what you think.

Eric

Wim, there has been no module or Vassal updates since the last time we played two weeks ago, right?

By the way, I would like to add High stakes at Bruyeres, from Equipment Pack.

Thanks

I've got vassal installed and working. Any way I can test out a scenario on it to (and get used to it) see if I could join in some weekend? I feel totally "all thumbs" in it and clueless as to what I should do...

Hello sir.

If I have the time, I can construct a tutorial log file for you. then send it to you.

You can then load it and advance through the log file to follow an example game being played through. This will show you how things work.

I have built these before but using using the older Vassal versions and would not work on the newest version of Vassal.

I will PM you when I get this done (it may take a few days or so).

I would advise you to come watch one of those overlords. See how things go. Since we're multiple players around the board, there's always people with downtime who can explain a bit what happens. then when you feel up to it, and there is still an open spot (generally these are covered by the CinC), you could join in, even mid game.

Also a good advise: just open Vassal, create a room and load a scenario and click and right click on everything you see: buttons, units, …
Als use shift click to select terrain, barbed wire, …
See what happens, see what you can do.

John, if you end up doing that heft project you could forum post it for others who want a walk through...but no expectations unless it's something you REALLY enjoy Laughing

Hey Comrades,
Have been working on navigating vassal, and getting there. As much as I'd like to play tomorrow, I may only pop in for some observation tomorrow, since my wife is flying back in tonight after being gone for 10 days. I know, it's a hard choice: M'44 overlord or hanging with the love of my life for 25 years now...? Shocked

Hmmm...Ummmm...Okay...I'll spend some time with her.. Rolling Eyes

And take a little break to observe a bit of Volturno! Wink

Haven't ever joined a game on vassal. Anyone be able to give me the steps I need to get there?

Thanks!

If you log on to Vassal, you arrive in the "main room". We will be in one of the other rooms. Mostly there are not a lot and the names usually feel you something. Ours might be called something like overlord or OL or volturno or one of our names.

It depends on who opens the room.

If you click on the room you will go there.

See yo tomorrow. Cool

So I suspect that a second OL was played after the first today?

Re:Let's play overlord : February 23rd - on Vassal Sun, 23 February 2014 23:37
Yes, we played a second one. The first one was over too soon.

The second one was one of the scenarios I'm testing for an overlord Campaign I'm working on.
It was a very tense battle up until the end. 15-14 end result.

I got one more thing to change to scenario, and I think I'm done with this one.
But there are a few others to play test as well, so whenever someone sees me on Vassal and is willing to play an overlord (in 1vs 1 mode if needed).
Sometimes I'll ask you to make victory event rolls before the battle, and reserve rolls.

Battle report on - Crossing the Volturno Line, by LooneyLlama

German team:

CinC and center FG Quit2 / RFG Sam E / LFG Jeronimon

Allied Team:

CinC and center FG tank commander / LFG Eric / RFG Tony

Well, there was major confusion in the Allied HQ (that be me) as I twice messed up with those Brit bridgelayers. I missed the fact they could not move right off and then thought they could move on our 3rd turn when they could not. So, I ended up playing some cards that I probably would have saved till later. I also missed one daylight roll. I also got confused by the "hill cave" terrain and shorted myself a few die rolls during combat. Then I missed the fact that a German BARRAGE could not be played on the last German turn due to the range being only 5. I was not at my best today to say the least. I am glad my FGs had a bit more on the ball and helped me out a bit. Thanks guys and sorry Tony for screwing up your flank so much.

But on the plus side, we got some killer order rolls on the two TFHs we played (one via COUNTER ATTACK). In two turns we rolled 8 stars, 4 armor and 10 infantry for a total of 22 orders with 24 rolls. Sam pointed out that all of our kills on our turns came from these two cards.

We hit both flanks pretty hard but the right was where we did the most damage. Tony took out 5 infantry (including one with AMBUSH). However his armor never really got going and stayed on the other side of the river.

Eric did some good work and killed off three infantry and halved both TDs.

I managed two kills by taking out a panzer and an infantry.

At the end of our 4th turn, we lead 11 to 3 and had 2 units ready to exit. One was a 1 fig infantry but the Germans could do nada about that unit as their Int roll was for an infantry. The errant BARRAGE was not played on the 1 fig infantry which could exit but it was a total whiff on our infanty in Termoli anyway.

Then my tank in a woods hex was missed with two 2d attacks and was not attacked by a 2d TD attack which fired on an infantry on our left instead. The Germans scored their third kill by taking out a tank on the Allied left.

All I needed to do was order an infantry on our right and tank in the center so those units could exit and secure the very easy Allied win.

I had an ARMOR ASSAULT from the start but never used it and not a single bridge was laid across the water. The Germans could not bring their reinforcements to bear soon enough to affect the Allied offensive.

So a 13 (45) to 3 (20) Allied win in this one.

Unless people express other preferences, we have planned to play this official overlord scenario by Richard Borg:

Too early? Do you sleep in? Laughing Or like me, do you have to work on Sunday? Was worth it to me to take the day off for the fun, not sure if I will be able to do that one Sunday a month, but might be able to get in a few hours or like yesterday, 1st one was quick, maybe just adjust my hours!!

Nonsense, you just give the orders and up to your FG's to make use of those orders!! And most of us missed some things about the dice, me with my Engineers that died a horrible death on their raft!!

You could give me the best cards in the world and I could still muck them up!! Which has been known to happen!! Laughing

Was a good game for us, dice and cards and they had some misses, especially Jeronimon, that might have changed things on our respective flanks and made for a different game.

And the 2nd game, Ponyri OL, was just as different and on the other end, right down to the last attack and both had chances to win the turn before, so 2 games and both on different ends of the spectrum, but both fun and I was on the winning side twice! Good way to spend the day!!

Re:Let's play overlord : February 23rd - on Vassal Mon, 24 February 2014 22:26
Again it was enjoyable to play with such fine gentlemen. I was disappointed to see that the scenario didn't play out very evenly. As Sam pointed out, the two TFH cards rolled 21 of 24 dice to activate units. That alone was incredible but the dice were just as good as we killed off 9 units in those two turns alone!! That unbalanced the game tremendously, and it was over quickly. No one had a chance to see how this scenario could have played out with the Axis reinforcements. Oh well.

So... what I'm proposing is another Overlord next weekend. I know this is short notice and I may not get any players but no harm in asking. I would like to play either of my scenarios, 'The Forgotten Battle' or 'Counterattack at Carentan' or one from Wim if he doesn't mind. He has sent me a couple of interesting overlord scenarios to try. Anyway, let me know if you are interested.

Not to worry sir, the game played and it was what it was. I give you all the credit in the world for taking the time to make such fine scenarios. I am sure they have given a lot of players great enjoyment and that is all one can expect.

I echo the sentiments that you are not to blame for the uneven outcome of the game.

I myself might have played a little less aggressive and that would have mattered. But on my flank that lonely guy that did not die caused a 3 to 6 medal difference.

1. he did not die
2. He killed another infantry (by himself I think, over several turns)
3. He exited

4 to 6 He helped kill another infantry and in Termoli it was two of Allies against one German. Had I killed the lonely guy that would have been reversed and I might have killed another infantry and taken Termoli.

Instead of 13 3 it could have been 9-6 in favor of the Allies and a battle on their hands with our reinforcements coming in.

Yes, that is a little speculative, but I stand by my findings. Cool

And I feel similar arguments are to be made for other flanks/sections. So just a good day for the Allies and a (very Wink ) bad day to be speaking German. Wink

Jeronimon,

Yep, the Power of One!! Indeed, kill him and

1. Not alive for the 1 fig kill on AMBUSH
2. Does not come out and kill the 2 fig in forest on TFH
3. Does not EXIT

And then would have had to try to cross the river with the other INF or with FUNNIES and BRIDGES....here come your BACK UPS and then who knows.....

Like you said, just one of those days for the BAD GUYS...
