Infantry: Tanks: Artillery - whats your 'rating' Fri, 11 April 2014 08:17
I don't know how to create polls, so I will ask as a thread

Just considering the basic units

Infantry (4 Figures)
Tanks (3 Figures)
Artillery (2 Figures)

Given no other information about scenario, map setup, or context*, how many units of each would you consider equivalent between all combos (Inf, Tanks) (Inf, Art), (Tanks, Art)

i.e. how many units of infantry would I have to offer you for to be glad to exchange for a unit of tanks

Feel free to use the number of figures as a way to get finer scale, i.e. "I would swap 1 tank unit for 6 infantry figures, split into 2 groups of 3"

I think I would put a tank unit of 3 figures ahead of an artillery unit, because the range and armor overrun makes it feel more useful to me. But two full artillery units on each side of the board gives you a huge coverage of range and attacks before it can be taken out. So I might have a unit of tanks and artillery on a similar footing, the artillery is harder to take out but somewhat easier to avoid. How many infantry would I take in exchange for a tank unit - 2 I don't think I would, 3 I think I would.

I'd be interested to hear what others think.

* of *course* the actual setup of terrain has a HUGE influence on how valuable units are, but this question is about a generic equivalence in your opinion BEFORE considering how scenario factors like terrain and position affect which unit is or isn't more useful.

Terrain does make a big difference, on an open map Armour outclasses Infantry big time, they move more, generally attack with more dice and overrun can be brutal but Infantry has abilities and some restrictions are less harsh. They can move into bunkers that Armour cannot, they are less restricted when attacking into and out of towns: 2 dice for Infantry vs 1 die for Armour for adjacent hexes. To me the terrain is the deciding factor, on a cluttered map, 2 Infantry is a fair swap but on an open map, I would think 3 would be better.

Artillery is the toughest to hit, but they have the fewest figures as well, they can be hidden except for the aircraft and barrage cards. They can hit you anywhere you are in range so you need to watch out for artillery when your unit is down to its last unit.

Due to ability of tank to outflank and overrun I would require at least 3 infantry in open terrain.

That's sort of like showing a picture of an attractive woman (or man) and asking a single person, "Would you marry this person?"

Without any further information, there is no meaningful way to answer such a question.

He may be trying to arrive at a point system for selecting units in which case a general comparison of the two units would appear to be required. Then again, maybe not.

Still totally depends on the situation.

I'm reminded of those chess problems where you have to promote a pawn to a knight or rook, rather than a queen, in order to win.

I've found arty at 4 points, tanks at 3 and inf at 2 is a reasonable way to roughly evaluate. Upgrades (engineer, elite) should cost an extra 50% rounded up.

come on Sam, don't go all BGG on me.

I clearly said ignore other factors, just consider an empty board without any terrain or features. So it doesn't "still depend" on anything. Theres nothing to depend on. Empty board, no other factors. How would you rate the effectiveness of the different basic unit types in terms of a costing. Don't read extra into a question when it's been specifically stated NOT to do that, and then complain the question makes no sense

Some scenario's i played that have little terrain seem to have mostly tank action if players have the cards to order these.
So tanks have large movement and firepower from a distance.
Artillerie is great if in bunkers or sandbags if there is no protection its a different story.
So i would say tanks 4,artillerie 3 and infanterie if regular 2.
That is on a empty board.

I used excel to come up with a point system for Memoir 44. It takes several factors into account, range, firepower, movement, and durability. I will be putting it on my user page, so watch for that.

I am getting ready for work, and don't have time right now, or else I would have it up.
