  [Beta] Small World 2.5 Mon, 28 April 2014 16:59
Dear Small World 2 players,

Today we are releasing the first Beta version of Small World 2.5!

How can I qualify?

This is an "open Beta", which means that any owner of the current digital version of Small Wolrd 2 can download and try the Beta version - when technically or practically possible (see platforms restrictions below). Please note that trying the Beta assumes that you fully agree with all the terms described in this memo, so please read it entirely.

Where do I get it?
  • On Steam (Windows, Mac and Linux):
    • In your Steam Library, right-click on Small World 2 and select "Properties".
    • Click on the "BETAS" tab.
    • Select "beta_version" from the pop-up menu located just above the password box and close the Properties panel.
    • The Beta version will download shortly after.

  • On iPad: because iOS greatly limits the number of Beta users, we unfortunately cannot accommodate everyone. You will have to contact us using the Bug Report form (see below), provide us with your UDID (very important, see http://whatsmyudid.com/), your DOW Login Name, your device model and explain why we should pick you. Your DOW account must show that you are a user of the digital version of Small World, so make sure you logged in at least once from your copy of Small World 2.
  • On Android Google Play: go to https://plus.google.com/communities/110531640163877444098 and ask to join the "community". Once you are accepted, follow the instructions on the community page.
  • Android Stand-alone: Kickstarter users who installed the stand-alone version of the original games can download the Beta directly from their Download Center in their Days of Wonder account. Here is the link: http://www.daysofwonder.com/download/smallworld2

Again, our goal is to put the Beta in as many hands as possible, but we must deal with some constrains in the process, so we thank you for your understanding.

How do I report bugs ?

We expect you to report issues when testing this Beta - that's the whole point of it, right?

So we set-up a special "contact us" page to report issues (or ask to be part of the Beta program for iOS or Android) here:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/contact/smallworld-beta

Make sure you use this page to contact us, and this page only. Do not contact us directly by e-mail or by private messages, we won't be able to answer you. Also note that even though we won't be able to answer all reports, we will read and process all of them. So make sure the matter was not already discussed in this forum before reporting an issue. This will save us time. Make sure you follow all the instructions in the report page to write a "good" bug report.

How do I discuss or give my feed-back ?

Beyond bug reports, we are also interested in hearing about your comments, suggestions, etc. Do it on this forum, simply post your message as usual, but prefix its title by "[Beta]" so that everyone (including us) can spot it easily. We'll keep this thread locked for comments, so that we can use it as our "official news" channel.

Are there special things that I should know?

You must be aware that this is Beta software, i.e. something with bugs, possibly very serious ones. Even though we are confident it should not happen, you must realize that you will be confronted with a work-in-progress software, which may crash your device or computer, lose data, etc. So please make a backup of your files. We won't offer any kind of compensation for your time and/or for any problems that may arise from the use of this beta software. If you are uncomfortable with this, please don't try the Beta and wait for the final version.
We retain the right to exclude any beta tester out of the program with or without a cause.

What should I do?
  • VERY IMPORTANT! Read the Release Notes before doing anything else (see next message).
  • After installation, read the User Guide in the Compendium to become familiar with the new features.
  • For more in-depth reading, refer to the Design Notes we published in the past (see list of links in next message).
  • Try the Online Arena and play on-line!
  • Try the new invitation system to play with Buddies - but make sure that they have the Beta too or it won't work!

We look forward to hearing from you!

The Days of Wonder dev team

Release Notes - Build 992, April 28th, aka "the first Beta" Mon, 28 April 2014 17:02
Highlights:

- New "Online Arena" mode, replacing the old "Quick Play" mode which was removed. This is a full lobby with chat, list of open games, etc.
- Two types of games, "Single Session" and "Multi Session". A bot immediately replaces a disconnected player in a Single Session game, as opposed to Multi Session games that can be played in parallel. Think of Single Session as fast synchronous games, and of Multi Session games as slower, asynchronous games.
- Player Clock: each player has a fixed pre-allocated amount of time to play an entire game - it works like a Chess Tournament clock. The player creating the game chooses this amount of time.
- "Play with Buddies" was renamed into "Invite Buddies" and now features a true invitation system - the game won't start before all players accept the invitation. Bots can be added in the mix.
- Stats screen at the end-of-game screen. Analyze your performances and which combo was the most effective!
- Usability improvements: animation "fast forward" button, chat in end-of-game screen, add buddy in end-of-game screen, emoticons in chat, chat history in-game (even when disconnected) and more.
- Fixes in the Rules Game Engine. See bugs list for details.
- Improved (smarter) AI, and fixes.

Main Known Issues:

- In an online game that includes a bot, the bot's playing time is counted against the next player. Obviously not a good thing!
- The Linux version is still experimental, you might crash when opening a Web view (Tutorial, Compendium or Combo descriptions). If this happens to you, you won't be able to do much with the game beyond starting it. We're working on the issue, thanks for your patience.
- Backward compatibility: don't try to play with someone who is using the current 2.0 version, you will get a "Bad Version" error message.
- English version only for the Compendium Guide and some UI elements. We advise you select the English language in Steam (In Steam Library, right click on Small World -> Properties -> Language -> English).

[Beta] New Beta bersion (build 1014) Wed, 30 April 2014 15:57
Dear players,

We released a new version today (build #1014). In Steam, the upgrade will be automatic.

The main new feature of this version is that when a player is an automatic loser (because he left a Single Session game or because he ran out of time), he will be presented in a "special manner" in the end-of-game screen Razz :

http://s3.amazonaws.com/dow-assets/www/sw25_7-tomb.jpg

Also, you can now add someone in your Buddy List directly from the Online Arena lobby. Click on his name and push the Add Buddy button next to his avatar. Quick and convenient.

We are starting to recruit some iPad and some Android users, but the process is a still bit slow. We are also going to spread the word on a larger scale, so that more people come to try the Beta on all platforms. Otherwise there won't be enough people in the Online Arena to create games and play. If you have friends who have the software, don't hesitate to tell them to join the Beta program!

As usual, we look forward to your comments and to your bug reports!

The Days of Wonder dev team

List of fixes:

Irritating

4392 [Mercenary] should not be able to spend more than 1 coin on each conquest
4374 [Bot HotSwap] Game gets stuck in a time-out situation

Misleading

4393 [Arena] The Clock value is missing in the Open Games info
4376 [End-of-Game] Automatic losers should be put at the bottom
4358 [In-game] Players' names are often missing

Custom

xxxx Main Menu should show "2.5" in the version number
4389 [Arena] I would like to be able to add a user to my Buddy list
4035 [iPad] In [Japanese], the filter box is out of reach because keyboard is taller

[Beta] New Beta bersion (build 1027) Sat, 03 May 2014 15:35
We posted a new build, #1027.

The number of Android and iOS users is growing. We are continuing our efforts on these platforms. The Linux version is also the subject of special care, because it does not run on as many distributions we would like to - yet.

We are also working on some issues, like a random crash in the Stats screen and another one when returning to the lobby. There is also a weird performance problem with animations on some Android devices (if you have that, we'd like to hear from you!).

So far the feed-back of beta testers has been very positive and encouraging. Comments and requests are mostly related to user interface and usability - and not the ground principles of the new version. So it looks like we are heading in the right direction. Smile

We need to attract more people to the Online Arena, so see more online games - so again, don't hesitate to spread the word to your friends.

We'd like to thank everyone for your participation and we hope you have fun with the Beta.

[Beta] New Beta bersion (build 1047) Mon, 05 May 2014 17:08
Today we start the week with a new build (#1047) across all platforms!

Linux users should be in much better shape: the game now starts on older Linux versions, such as Ubuntu 12.03 LTS. There are still some graphic glitches here and there, but this version is a huge step forward, so you should be able to do a few things with it. Give it a try and get back to us.

A number of small bugs were fixed (see list below).

The team is working on the various requests and comments from all Beta testers.

Android Kickstarter users who installed the stand-alone version of the original games can now download the beta directly from their Download Center in their Days of Wonder account. Here is the link: http://www.daysofwonder.com/download/smallworld2

Android Google Play users: we found the reason of the animations performances issue, you should have a fix by tomorrow.

Steam users now have "help balloons" when hovering on UI elements in the new Online Arena screen.

Thank you for trying this Beta version,

The Days of Wonder dev team

List of bug fixes:

4407 [Arena] [iPad] Chat button covers long messages in the lobby
4406 English Spelling mistakes
4402 [Arena] [Open Games List] The auto redeployment icon is always displayed
4401 [Compendium] [iOS 5.1] No CSS styles and images
4400 [Arena] Automatic Redeployment should be off by default for Single Session games
4395 [Mac / Retina] : some black artifacts appears on map when skipping animations
4390 [Arena] [Desktop] UI elements need help balloons
4409 Online Arena Screen / Timeout buttons: once set it's not obvious the 3rd button is for custom timeout

[Beta] New Beta bersion (build 1072) Wed, 07 May 2014 16:32
Dear Small World 2 Beta testers,

Today we released a great upgrade of the Beta (build 1072).

It fixes several serious high-traffic crashes: in the stats screen at the end of the game, when re-entering the Online Arena for a second time, etc.

We reworked the user interface for the Berserk power. The modal dialog at the beginning of the turn is completely gone. Instead, use the Decline or the Roll Die button located at the usual place, in the bottom right corner. Very simple. This way, you have all leisure to explore the map and the next combos.

We also made a number of small usability improvements. For example, we removed the cross in the presence indicator light when people are not connected - it was confusing. When you arrive in the Online Arena, all past dialogs are now in gray text, which suggests that they were written a while ago, as opposed to new text which will appear in black. The "Custom" button for the Player Clock is now clearly labeled.

On Android (Google Play version), we resolved the performance problem with animations! Also we fixed a serious crash when entering the Online Arena.

The Linux version saw a number of important fixes.

We hope you enjoy this version!

The Days of Wonder dev team

List of main fixes:

4424 [Windows] [End-of-Game] Crash after animation
4403 [Arena] Crash after first online game
4397 [Stats Screen] Crash
4383 [Linux] Crash when displaying Web views

Irritating

4420 [Linux] Opening an external Web page does not work
4413 [Berserk] beginning-of-turn UI should be improved
4412 [stats screen]: sometimes missing in online games
4404 [Android] Animation performance issues

Misleading

4421 [Linux] [Compendium] Changing pages on the right side does not update the TOC
4414 [UI] the disconnected presence LED is misleading
4409 Online Arena Screen / Timeout buttons: once set it's not obvious the 3rd button is for custom timeout

Custom

4425 [Chat] In lobby old messages should be gray
4419 [Linux] Images don't appear in most Web views
4408 [Wndows] In 4 and 5-player games, the chat box covers the top menu
4268 [Windows] [Compendium] Changing pages on the right side does not update the TOC

No category

4285 [Windows] Audio filters/codecs should be cleaned up when switching views

[Beta] New Beta bersion (build 1196) Fri, 23 May 2014 17:26
Dear Beta testers,

The build from today, #1196, brings some improvements under the hood. For example, in some cases the Player Clock would not always starts when it was your turn to play (even if it did internally).

Build #1196 is available across all platforms and devices. This should give you a solid version to play with during the week-end.

So make sure you upgrade and have fun with it! Very Happy

  [Beta] New Beta bersion (builds 1226, 1229 and 1233) Fri, 30 May 2014 14:20
Dear Beta Testers,

We have been silent for a while, because we were focused on a few very deep and demanding bugs. The good news is that we finally fixed them, which allows us to bring you a new version just in time for the week-end!

Depending on your platform, you will have a build number that varies slightly: 1226 on Android, 1229 on iPad, and 1233 on Steam. Don't worry too much about the differences, which were caused by platform-specific fixes. All versions are compatible together.

The endless redeployment bug is definitively fixed. A very deep random bug where game data could become corrupted and crash everyone was fixed (boy, that one was hard!). A few usability issues were also addressed. You will find a detailed list below.

The bottom line is that you should find this version much more stable and pleasant to use.

Our main focus is now to push strongly on the Linux version, which is still behind the other ones. But we are getting there!

Have fun with Small World during the week-end!

The Small World dev team

4509 [Windows] Crash on Yann's home PC

4501 [Android] Tutorial Video should play on Kindle and old Android devices
4495 [Tablets] Private Games : in the password dialog, the button for validating the dialog is hidden by the keyboard
4492 [AI] Bots redeployment should always end (endless looping bug)

Dear players,

We just released a new build, version 1262.

For Windows users, it features a tentative fix of the Full Screen bug that occurs with some among you: the Compendium (race and power descriptions) would not appear in Full Screen mode. We believe we found a solution, please confirm.

For Linux users, you will find more fixes. See details below.

Enjoy!
