So this happened... Fri, 02 May 2014 15:42
While playing Sword Beach at the monthly Board Game Night in NYC (drumming up support for D-Day landings session) I rolled some dice. One of them got lodged in a hedgehog and was in an 'undetermined' state. My house rule states,

'Remove the obstacle and reassess the die state' so...

Back to the drawing board on dice design I think.

REROLL!

A die roll like that is officially known as "cocked" - so simply re-roll.

Yeah, because of something that happens once in 1,000 rolls. Rolling Eyes

Why are the corners of the M44 dice rounded when most other dice are square? Confused

More than likely because they are wooden. Wooden dice that are square have to made of a tight grained dense wood like Walnut which is more expensive or they will tend to split. Rounding the corners eliminates this hazard more or less and means you can use a less dense cheaper grade of wood.
If you look carefully enough, almost all dice are rounded on the edges to make them roll better.
So, in the end, it is probably a cost saving measure.
Resin dice are probably much more expensive and cheap hollow plastic dice with stickers, just not very appealing.
I like them!!!!
Cool

Stevens,
Thanks for the info, I never realized that about dice. There was a guy on e-bay who sold custom dice for each army, but I have not seen them for awhile. Nice to have people like you around.

Personally I love rounded dice, despite the chance I might have to re-roll, which is really not that strenuous BTW. Good exercise that complements the lifting of stein to mouth. Square dice really make me sad.

Hmm, you roll the dice on the board? You are really asking for trouble Laughing

Years ago, we did the same on a game which had hundreds of counters - Fire in the East me thinks. The rolls were conducted in a clear (read safe) area of the map. Unfortunately, one gamer could not seem to control the tossed dice as well as the rest of us and wiped out a number of stacks of game pieces. We tried to set things right, but when over 100 counters were involved.... At any rate, that is when dice towers came into the picture.
