[Beta] Cannot get local play to work Sun, 18 May 2014 19:35
I have Smallworld 2.5 installed on two computers (Steam) at home. I am trying to get the local multiplayer to work, with no success.

I tried disabling the firewall on both computers, and creating the game on either computer, but I can't "see" the game started on the other computer.

Please note that both computers use the same Steam account. I do not know if local play is supposed to work this way, but I would expect that if this were the issue, I would see the game but be warned that it cannot be joined.

I am not able to find information online about how to troubleshoot local multiplayer issues.

Thanks for any help...

Normally it should work. I suspect a firewall issue, even though I noted that you disabled it. We'll investigate.

Maybe a few more details...

One computer uses Windows 8.1 update 1. The other one is XP (SP3 I guess).

Both connected by Wi-Fi.

I can ping both ways.

I do not have a third party firewall installed on either computer, and Windows firewall is completely disabled. It is a little difficult understanding what the firewall issue could be, although I obviously cannot rule out missing something, somewhere.

Let me know if there is additional information that would be useful to you.

I can confirm the issue is related to Windows 8.1.

I installed the game on a second XP computer, and it works between both XP machines (beta 2.5). It works with the firewall enabled on these two XP computers.

On the 8.1 computer, is there any service I might have disabled or configured in a way that would prevent connections from being established beside the firewall? Are there logs that could help pinpoint the issue?

Regards,

Windows firewalling is set on an application-per-application basis. So you need to go to the Win8 firewall settings and make sure that the firewall is opened for Small World.

I hope this helps,

I see the firewall exceptions for Steam and Small World (seems to point to the right executable file).

Once again, with the firewall completely disabled, this should not be an issue...

Are there restrictions that still apply with the firewall disabled in the control panel?

Is there some kind of firewall log I could check to make sure there are no blocked connections?

I created a local game with Win 8.1 and I could join it from an iPad and an Android tablet.

Make sure all your devices / computers are in the Local Game screen, and only at that moment push the Create button on the Win 8.1 machine. Maybe it will make a difference?

Local play works now. All firewall enabled. No change that I know of on my computers. No need to go to the local play screen on all computers before creating the game.

Maybe a recent update solved the issue?
