Armored Infantry-Panzer Grenadiers Sun, 20 November 2005 13:05
I have two questions.

1. Does anyone have any suggested House Rules for mobile infantry...i.e. those using Halftracks/Vehicles. I think they are a huge component missing from the game. How would you do mount/dismount? Would you expand their attack power...would they be more vulnerable to armor attack? Any suggestions?

-and-

2. If I add such components, do you the 1/285 GHQ vehicles would be a good sub/right scale for these missing pieces?

such as:

Thanks ahead of time for any input.

Hi
In reply to the GHQ part of your question. the tank models in M'44 are 10mm approx in scale. Too big for GHQ which are around 5-6mm scale. However I find the smaller scale fits well with the Hexes used in M'44 and considering changing all my models to this scale.

"Technically" mobile infantry are already in the game. Per scenario #9, Panzergrenadiers may move 2 and still battle.

However, if you're looking for something detailed, I would play them as such:

1. While mounted, may move 3 and battle. Fire per normal infantry rules. This would reflect the weapons mounted on these vehicles (MG's for the most part).

2. May dismount or mount their vehicles once per turn, but only prior to the transport moving.

3. While dismounted, mobile infantry move as normal infantry, but fire as Finnish ski troops: 3-2.

Hope that give you some ideas.

Maybe it's just me, but I think some sort of "real" mobile infantry would be cool. Special forces are - and should be - better than regular soldiers but I don't find them as mobile infantry.

Why would they ever dismount? Perhaps move 3 or battle while mounted. Or battling 2-1 (as cavalry) mounted and 3-2-1 dismounted. (This is not criticism towards your suggestion, just tossing ideas around.)

Our idea, and we have used it effectively several times, for mobile infantry: they move 1-2 hexes and battle or move 3 hexes and can't battle. This allows them to keep up with armor, for instance, but they are not as powerful as armor since they cannot shoot after a 3 hex move. The attack numbers are 3-2 only, keeping things as balanced as possible and trying not to make the mobile infantry overpowerful.

We don't mess with mount/dismount, as that tends to complicate things a bit much in our opinion. The mobility and firepower are what sets them apart from regular infantry, there is no need for more layers of complexity, IMO.

The problem, with mobile forces, is that the mapboard has not much depth... Manoeuver is quite limited.
Notice that mechanized infantry was usually unloaded and the halftracks or APCs (Kangaroos, Bren Carriers) kept out of sight.

Nevertheless, here could be other adapted rules :

- Mechanized troops were usually less vulnerable to infantry : when Infantry fires against mech troops, only "tank" (and grenade) results will eliminate a figurine - but tanks or arty firing would not change their firing rules (as a Halftrack is a sitting duck against any tank or gun).

- Mech troops could be allowed overrun, as tanks.

- Motorized (i.e. truck transported) could move 3 hexes and fight (but only against adjacent units).
