I can report that C&C:Ancients works great for basic LOTR battles. Leadership rules work really well and give a totally different feel from M44.
See the attached photos of the battle that ended the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.

Sorry if the posting was off topic for BattleLore. Just trying to show that BattleLore should be great (at least for the basic mechanics.)
