I played a tiny bit of battlelore today, and i don't think we were playing by the rules. But is this game complex and fun. like is it worth $70?

Absolutely. It's fast and fun... I've gotten a few girls to learn how to play!

Costwise... compared to "tabletop games"... this game is inexpensive!

The product quality is great... well, maybe about the bleeding dice issue.

What is the bleeding deck?

It's bleeding dice (good pun there for the English speakers- especially if I could've written it in a Michael Caine accent... Surprised ). Anyway, the ink on the dice wears off quite easily. DoW are aware of this and will be getting new dice made, which they will be providing to us all just as soon as they get the matter sorted out. You can read all about it here. Wink

Absolutely. The gameplay is smooth, the figures are superb, and it has a wonderful, helpful, fan base. And for farley's sake, don't dwell on the dice.

Absolutely worth the price. I've gotten my wife to play the first scenario twice. She used the brits both times and we split victories.

I am going to do demos at my local game shop this weekend. I am sure that it will be a big hit.

Depends on how you determine "Worth $70"...

At $1/player/hour, you'll need about 35 plays to justify.

At $5/player/hour (roughly the rate for movies in the theater), you'll need to play a mere 7 games...

Yes, it is fun.
Yes, it is simple to play (the number of rules questions here notwithstanding) and I have been able to play another C&C game adequately (to wit: M44).
Yes, it is a fairly in depth ruleset IN SOME WAYS, and very streamlined in others.
Yes, the learning curve is simple.

The question is: for two people, how much is your gaming time worth?

I ONLY can recommend this game, certainly if you loved other Richard Borg games (like Mémoir'44). It has IMHO a great potential and a fantastic "learning curve". You can keep it indeed real simple! And you can go in every detail you want, certainly if you're not accustomed with the "wargame beasts" of the sixties and the seventies.

If you got some money to spare, it's certainly worth every bit of it! You're going to have HOURS of gaming pleasure! I really can assure you THAT! Smile

This thread is a bit like asking a Democratic convention if Hillary Clinton has sexy legs! (Alright, not sure where that came from but anyway....)

Yes!!!! This game is worth it. I have spent twice as much on Memoir 44 and all its expansions times two. I have played that game over a 100 times and still not tired of it. BattleLore looks to get the same usage once I get some time to get it going.

And though you will probably want to spend more money with future expansions, the dollars you spend now will just give you much more return later. The possibilities with this game are endless. I thought Memoir 44 would never be exhausted and BL brings much much more to the table with the Lore cards, potential for more creatures, races, Lore masters, etc.

I made the mistake of skipping out on Memoir 44 for a couple of years thinking it wasn't worth it. I wish I had that time back and could have 3 times the number of games under my belt.

The game is worth it to anyone who likes this type of game. If one likes fantasy strategy; making tactical decisions, and does not mind luck playing a role in influencing the outcome, then this may be THE game to have. I like this kind of game. I am getting my money's worth.

A note on the expansions. I am having a blast with the game as it is, and what this does is increase my anticipation of the expansions. At 1 or 2 small expansions/mo. at 7-12 dollars each, that will not be a budget breaker for most even if one buys ALL the expansions (not that I will).

A couple "major expansions" a year... well, I hope they are not $70.00 expansions. I expect that there will be, in addition to new unit type expansions, epic campaign expansions and RPG expansions. The battles we fight now will be just a part of a much larger game (I am just speculating here).

Note that the biggest complaints against the game that I have noticed are:

1. That there will be expansions to buy. (a plus for me, but as I said, I am having a blast w/o the expansions).

2. That there is "too much" luck involved. (That "luck" is what fuels that suspense as you, say for example, move a unit into a risky position to accomplish a goal and you do not know if it will be successful or not, and if not, your unit is probably toast). The decisions you make are tactical. The outcome of the battle depends on those decisions as well as luck. The better the decisions, the less "good luck" you'll need to win).

3. Price - well, see remarks made earlier about the time you think you'll spend enjoying the initial game versus the initial price paid. As for me, I am thinking I have made a good investment (but I paid only about $49 plus $8 shipping).

4. Bleeding dice and bent figures - dice problem can be fixed, several ways and DOW is making a new dice set; and bent figures, though a negative, are very easily fixed (see forum).

5. Figures are bland in color. Listen, the figures are cool looking. Painted figures are not necessary to play the game, but can be made to look fantastic with a paint job. I am no expert, but all mine are painted, and you can add great color and overall visual effect without the detailed work of the experts.

Example:
http://www.geocities.com/jwquinn@sbcglobal.net/Battlelore.ht ml

Bottom line - well worth it for me.

I'll offer a slightly dissenting voice: not only do I not find Hillary Clinton's legs that sexy, but I admit I was a wee bit disappointed with the game. I'm not sure if this is cause and effect, but...

I've never played any of the Borg games before, so didn't know what to expect. I'm used to more traditional wargames where, during your turn, you are not restricted in which pieces you can move.

Being restricted to the cards in your hand for activating your soldiers, you are faced with difficult choices to make during your turn. WHile this is a very interesting mechanic, it has resulted in a few games that were lost because, for multiple turns, no command cards came up for the appropriate board section. Though some might argue this is a neat representation of the confusion of war, it felt a little flat with my gaming group. We also felt the games ended rather abruptly, ended just as things were heating up, and were very close (ie, though I got the five kills needed to win on turn x, my opponent could have done the same on his very next turn. it just didn't feel like a "win" as he still had a substantial force on the board). Also the notion that a creature could get killed in one hit on the first turn, or last the entire game, all depending on a really small chance of killing it outright (2.7% each time you roll a die) really turned us all off. This and the command card system were a bit too luck-driven to suit our gaming styles.

Many of these things are quite easy to remedy with small tweaks and house rules, but as the game is, I'm not sure I'll play it too much.

Having said that, I should add that the production values are fantastic, and that, without a moment's hesitation, I felt I got my money's worth after just an hour of looking at the rules and the minis (and I don't get paid anywhere near 70$ an hour) Smile

This game is truly a labor of love, and if you can accept the major role chance plays in it, it's absolutely fantastic.

My group has a blast with it. It's "worth it" for us.

I totally understand the post above that was lukewarm on the game though. Wargamers may not like it too much (but will still appreciate aspects of it no doubt). As my group is more of a general interest group (pen and paper RPGs to Caracassonne), we like it.

Thanks.

I was finished in about 2 weeks. I did not really keep track of hours spent..... I would guess around 25-30. I usually tried to paint a unit at a time (3 cavalry figures or 4 infantry figures). Sometimes I would do 2 units (6-8 figures) of the same type at a time. I painted the stands first for all of the figures of a unit(s), then silver armor and swords, then shields and other uniform sections the same color as the shield, the faces and arms, then browns and blacks for shoes, etc. I also often would start the next group by panting their bases as I was waiting for the paint to dry on th eprevous group. It went pretty well.

To echo the stuff above, strict wargamers of the historical miniatures variety might find the rules too simplified. But for medieval / fantasy warfare simulated with a fantastic game mechanic (the cards) and the added fun of a magic system (lore) it is a great game.

As one posted said, imagine the cost divided by the number of times you plan on playing. I am sure mine will get down to pennies a game by the time I have worn it out.

For me, totally worth it.

It's a fantastic game and I totally recommend it. I've played it 14 times in the past month and wish I had the time to play it more. I've played it with seven different people and all of them liked it to varying degrees.

Sometimes, people will provide insights that it's not worth one's while in light of one's tastes...

For example, a guy once asked about striker on the striker forum of the COTI site, mentioned that he was looking for something as easy as WHFB... and mentioned IIRC 2nd ed... He was promptly pointed out that not only was Striker considerably more detailed, but also written for a smaller figure scale, and involved really good but detailed C-3 rules... and that he should probably look into WH40K.

Few gamers want to create a whiney wanker newbie through dishonesty.

In the case of the chap above, he's played it once, and found it worth a deeper look... and asked good questions.

Now, if an ASL or Striker player were looking, I'd be asking questions before recommending it.

Is the game worth it? Nah, it isn't! Save your money and buy something else! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Yes, this game is a blast. The only downside is we NEED more scenarios. I play Warhammer Fantasy and have thousands of dollars tied up in gaming. This game is a very good price for what you get. If the price scares you then probably you should play card games or something else. I look forward to expansions. This game will not replace Warhammer Fantasy for me but it will be my second favorite game!

Buy the game. You can find it on line fairly cheep. I picked mine up from Hobby Town for $63. I did have a $20 off coupon if I spent $50 for more so it really cost me $43 + tax.

DoW just released 7 new official scenarios. You can find them on this site (if you have registered your game), or you can get them from BoardGameGeek in PDF format here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/fileinfo.php?fileid=21539

I am a died-in-the-wool historical figure and board wargamer who, over the years, was starting to get a wee bit fed up with the increasing complexity of rules.

Wargames figure rules have seen a bit of a return to sanity as have some boardgame rules.

I love Memoir '44 and BattleLore for what they are: great games that have put a lot of the fun back into the hobby and the level of complexity of the rules is just right for this type of game.

Regards,

Whatever you do DON'T BUY THIS GAME!!!

Here are my reasons:
1) You will want to play this game all the time.

2) You may feel compelled to paint the tiny 200+ figures.

3) You will post the dumbest questions on this forum only to realize that you already knew the answer.

4) You will not be able to wait for the additional supplements without going Cr@Zy!!!

5) You may feel compelled to tinker with the rules, only to find that they are already perfect.

6) It is really expensive. $70.00 is way to much to pay for such a great, fun game.

Just my 2 cents worth. Embarassed

Yes, this game is better than far left wing politics or assaults on the second amendment. Other than the dice issues and some complaints about missing bits, it is a decent enough buy for the money. You get access to an online map editor along with your purchase, so there is good replay value. The rules are easy enough, just make sure you read them instead of skimming when you have a question. The fact that it is a light war game that is not randomly packaged is good. If you have to have a game right now and you have the 70 to drop, you won't be disappointed. You'd probably be happy with something like Heroscape as well. The theme is way different, but the 3D customizable hex terrain is pretty neat. I guess it depends on the flavor you like and the age group of the people you will be playing with.

I know I'm digging up an old post here, but the validity of just "paying attention" is good advice, here. Battlelore has a wide array of avenues to explore and create diversity in gaming. I was rusty a sheck and taught my son tonight how to play...with a few quick rulebook checks, and reading back through the guides, we had a great time, he soaked it up quickly and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.

I look forward to putting magnets on my bases and getting some of my favorite units painted.

I'm gonna third this and even further state:

BattleLore is not for strict wargamers.

There. As a board gamer myself, I would rather a wargamer tell me what's good about it, then try to convince one that they'll like it. I've learned that you can't convince a simulationist of anything, so don't even try. Razz

It's worth a great deal more than $70 as you will fall in love with it and simply have to get the specialist packs, Eipc BL and Call to Arms--all of which add a great deal to the replay value.

Not to mention getting access to this site!
