Starting the game Sun, 18 February 2007 21:45
Hi all,

I have a question about the sequence of initial actions before you actualy start to play.

I think it can be very important - especialy when you are playing Lore Scenarios with Custom War Council.

Right now I'm playing it this way:
1. Choosing War Council
2. If there are any third levels Lore Masters special hexes are placed, starting with player who starts the game
3. If there are any Creatures chosen first player choose one first eventually followed by second player. (Q: Can you have more than one creature in your army?)
4. First player place his creature together with the lair, second player next.
5. Drawing of Command cards (according to Comander level)
6. Drawing of 4 Lore cards and choosing apropriate numbers.

Is it correct?

And one more question connected with official scenario. If there is a Hill Giant in one of the armies already on board does it mean that the owner of Hill Giant should also place the Rock Pile somewhere on the board or does it means that there is no Rock Pile in this game?
This prolbem arise in 13th Official Scenario.

Thanks in advance for your answers and sorry for my English - hope you will understand what I mean Wink

Best,
Jarek

On your second question... we have played that if the scenario doesn't specifically state that the rockpile is in play, then only the giant is in play. Earth Elemental is different as it is absolutely specific to its terrain, but the Giant doesn't seem to be. Nothing official that I've heard on it yet, but maybe it'll get added to the FAQ.

I have the same question with you about the senario 13 and the Hill Giant.

About the Lore Masters' Landmarks: on page 65 say "An adventure's battle notes will state when Lore Master Landmark rules are in effect", unfortunately the only official senario with this note is No10.

No need to apologize for your English. I've seen worse usage by college graduates! Seriously, your English is very good.

As to your questions, I can't add anything worthwhile. I, too, play without the giant's lair if it isn't specifically called for by scenario notes.

Yeah, you don't play the Lair hex unless it says to. There's another Official Adventure later with the Hill Giant that specifically includes the Lair hex so I'd say the one that doesn't, you don't use the Rock Pile.

Your other question on phase order is a good one. I also am wondering if you place the Level 3 Landmarks BEFORE Command Cards are drawn. That would influence where I would put it for SURE

For the reasons mentioned, it makes sense to put all the units and landmarks on the board first, and draw the cards later.

If there are scenarios in the future, where you are allowed to place your units within a certain section of the board (army building), the knowledge of your starting hand would considerably affect your unit placement strategy. On the other hand, if both players had that option...

Even if we agree that you place your units and landmarks before drawing Command Cards we still don't know what comes first - Special Buildings or Creature's Lairs...
