Elevated Terrain and Ranged Weapons Tue, 06 March 2007 00:52
During a game yesterday, I parked a unit on an elevated terrain hex. My opponent wanted to shoot at me with his archery unit 3 hexes away. We had a bit of a disagreement on whether or not he could see me on the hill.

So, that's my question: When a unit is on an elevated terrain hex, is the line of sight to that unit still blocked? Or could my son see me on the hill and shoot at me with his archers?

Can anyone help? (By the way, he slaughtered me: 6 to 1! It was still a great game though Very Happy )

Elevated terrain blocks LOS THROUGH the hex not INTO the hex.

Think of it this way. If you stand on top of a hill, you can see the enemy over yonder....and they can see you. You can shoot at them....and they can shoot at you. And no, you can't claim your troops are hiding on the side of the hill hex away from the enemy. If you are in the hill hex, you sre considered ON TOP of the hill, not at its base.

Now stand on an adjacent hex so the hill hex is inbetween you and your opponent. You opponent can't see you, and you can't see your opponent. Hence, you can't shoot at each other.

I would have liked to see a rule shooting up a hill reduces range by -1 and shooting from a hill increases range by +1. Seems realistic and possibly a good house rule Smile

just remember that the terrain hex that your target is on NEVER blocks line of sight. You don't count the target's hex when calculating terrain blocking line of sight.

We played the first few games thinking ranged units could not fire into forest hexes before realizing the aforementioned "terrain does not block LOS for its own hex". It's a good rule to know Smile

Thanks everyone! By the way can anybody give me a page number in the rules where I can find what you're saying? (I want to be able to show my son...)

It's ALL there under LINE OF SIGHT. The part that descibes the target hex's terrain not affecting line of sight is written as a stand-alone paragraph (which is why I missed it as well, somehow and played my first few games incorrectly)

I agree. It seems like a good house rule to me, too, but I can't get my partner to agree to it. She says as soon as I get a game, I want to start adding rules (and she's right!).

The only change I would make would be "shooting DOWN from a hill" not just shooting from a hill.

So it would read:

Units using a ranged attack shooting up a hill reduce range by -1 and shooting down from a hill increase range by +1.
