Review of Pilgrims cards??? Sat, 05 November 2005 06:44
I was thinking about buying the game but am 50/50 on it. Do the new cards add much to the game...do they fix issues that people talk about on the game?

Can someone give a brief review that has played the game with the new expansion? Thanks in advance.

The "expansion" is simply a bunch of new ideas for old mechanics (some Events, some scrolls of the Scriptorium and a book for the Library), so they won't change your opinion about the game (whatever it is Wink ). They give a bit more variety and that's all (no new rules).

ok, thanks! Well put--that makes sense.

Also, is the game 'too random' with 'randomly' picking cards from opponents and the mass (passing left) or is there strategy to it?

Yes, there's randomness but there's also strategy. The game is less strategical (and more "chaotic") with every player you add.
If you want a "pure deduction" game (like Mastermind, Code777, Black Vienna, etc.), this is NOT it.
If you want a nice atmosphere, beatuiful bits, easy rules to lure non-gamers (...you know, those marks that distinguish DoW Wink ) and a blend of luck & skill, then you've found it.

Since you seem to be so torn, the best hint I've for you is to try to play it before buying: look for demo at local stores, conventions, people already owning it...

Have fun! Smile

A simple way to make the game a little more deduction-oriented is to pass cards at every other Mass and allow people to be able to keep one card in reserve when passing cards at Mass.

The major strategy in the game is knowing what suspect cards to hold onto. If youve got a few cards in hand, and some of them have already been seen by other people for some reason or another, make sure to keep the secret ones in your hand for as long as possible, and pass on the ones that some people already know about.

The trick is making sure you have enough cards in hand to pass on the amount in the mass card, but still keep some of them secret.

We have found that we enjoy the game more without using the scriptum cards at all. Definiatly makes the game less random.
