So, I don't know if it's time to start a Brig. General thread. I keep hoping for an update...but I'm guessing sometime this week or next.
Just to keep you up to date on my record as a Lt. Colonel and so we can start tracking for Brig. Gen., here are my current victory totals.
Axis
Eastern 24
Western 31
Pacific 11
Med 17
Total 83
Allies
Eastern 14
Western 32
Pacific 15
Med 15
Total 76
Total Victories/Games Played: 159/257
So, my winning percentage has gone down. But it's not surprising as I was playing Rzhev almost exclusively for the last few days. And I finally obtained the Axis Aces High award after much effort. Thanks to johnhill8243 for being a great sport -- he saw what I was trying to do, but had no cards to play on the right. I had set it up, but didn't have Air Power. As the medal count got higher, I finally drew the card and got the four kills. I then barely pulled out the victory, but it was a great game and a worthy opponent.
So, I've won all the scenarios again (except for jdrommel's) as a Colonel and have earned almost all the achievements (except for DoW, Fly You Fools, and the others that nobody has earned).
Now, I can play for fun!

Thanks for the congrats...I'm not sure I can recommend trying for the Axis Aces High award -- it was very difficult and frustrating at times. But Rzhev is definitely the best place to try for it -- Axis have six cards to four for the Russians (not to mention the commissar), the Russians are against the backline in all three sections, and once wounded those units are reluctant to move across the frozen river. I played all my recons as soon as possible to try to get Air Power and weakened the infantry to one figure before I drew it. Everything went my way, so I was very lucky...
But who am I kidding, it was fun to chase that one (and all the others). I really enjoy the strategic twist that the awards put on the game -- especially for the commando ones, air power, Wittman, and the Arnhem Christmas tree that was previously available. You really have to try to set these up to earn them (although the commando infantry was more difficult when you had to earn it at Arnhem...).

Chasing ribbons is a game in itself, and after playing every scenario a couple of times it is nice to have some little easter egg hunt as an added incentive to play the scenario.
Also, while rating and points can jump and fall precipitously (i dropped from 1716 and 33rd place to 1604 and 244th in one weekend after losing 7 out of 10, many of them to lower ranks than i) your officer rank stay solid.
so you could lose 100 games and still be a colonel..testament to past glories, long service and due dilligence...so it is nice that there is something out there to chase....
...not that playing for fun isn't enough for most of us, but it still adds a bit to your day when after the dust settles the computer says you have won something....it is like that gold star from the kindergarten teacher for putting your pants back on the right facing way....

Finally made it to Colonel today - number 12 I think!
Don't know my overall stats, I was simply working through all the scenarios to make sure I'd won them all. Beating CrewcutJim at Bir Hakehim was the winning line. I was going to look at my stats once I'd won all of the scenarios.
Unfortunately I didn't notice I'd been promoted - no fanfare or dancing girls! I thought I still had to win at Sidi Omar.
I've really quite enjoyed going back through all the different scenarios - some I've hardly played in months. Some of the hardest on paper were the easiest to win, some of the easier surprisingly difficult.
I hope DoW carry on with these side quests - I enjoy playing for fun, but sometimes it's nice to have a target to focus on, and a reason to play different scenarios.

Congratulations from me as well. You earned your bird, now just don't go flipping it...
Who will be next? Good question. From what I've seen, I expect the floodgates to open. Soon.
Who will earn their first star? And how? And where is the staff of DOW? Now those are questions to which I have no answer...

There is plenty of room in the club. Make yourself comfortable and enjoy as the priveledges that your new rank brings.

Whether you are correct or not Jokull, I am doing my best to win.
But some folks who are cadets (first timers to Memoir'44 Online) are by no means "virgins" to the game and will show you a thing or two.
I have had this LEARNING EXPERIENCE while trying to move up in the ranks. Thanks to all my novice opponents who have not been intimidated by rank and have shown me some humility. Meaning of course that they were not only nice guys, but humbled me by their superior play and planning.

That is probably because you needed the win to win all scenarios, I know you said you had one left, but could that be a scenario that is new?
My findings are aimed at those who win almost every time and have long since completed every mission but do not get promoted.
I thought too I would pick up enough games with Cadets on the way but no.
As for #13, it is just one of life's many numbers.

When I gained promotion, I thought I still had to win Dug in at Sidi Omar as the Allies.
I also hadn't won in Tunisia, Lisyanka and Rzhev, but I guessed that they were some of the newer scenarios.
PS I still haven't won Rzhev as the allies

The only way I've found to win Rzhev as the Russians is to be very aggressive. It doesn't matter which section, but you have to make a focused, sustained attack there. It keeps the Germans busy and away from the other vulnerable sections and it is the only way to get medals by forcing the Germans out of cover. If you can get the medal on the left even better.

A lot of you did get promoted the same game you L O S T
and I am betting (and see I got promoted) that it was against a Cadet.
I had even taken it further that it had to be when the Cadet got promoted to 2. lt but I can say for sure that is not it.
But of course, we shall probably never know for sure.

I don't believe the skillpoint is relevant to promotion as much as specific victories in specific theaters of operations. To date all those who have collected data have found these to be the most reliable indicators.
You will find in the list of those with the highest skillpoints not necessarily those with the most promotions.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and bet they'll eventually add overlord and breakthough maps to the online game. You'll have to be the general in these scenarios to get credit towards general ranking.
|
Online Overlord sounds like fun!! There's the way to train the kiddies (cadets). I reckon you might even need your 3 Band of Brothers to help out. If you're just a Sectional Commander, though, would a win for your side count towards your normal promotion?

So, Jokull, 15 wins as each side in each theater, spread over a range (but perhaps not all) scenarios, + 250 games min. as Lt. Col. -- this did not do it for you?
I also find it hard to believe that we would need to lose to cadets to gain promotion.

I tried to achieve the promotion before I ran out of gold ingots, but I did not. No big deal but I will be taking a break from the game for awhile, so it feels like a good time to contribute, for the sake of others chasing promotion, what I see in my record.
Wound up with these numbers - since promotion to Lt. Col.
Eastern: 17 wins as Allies, 18 as Axis
Mediterranean: 17 / 24
Pacific: 16 / 16
Western: 28 / 27 (cadets are much more likely to accept Western invites)
total games 278
Training cadets -- that's rough on the skill rating, as others have noted.
I won nearly all sides. The exceptions do not seem to be special cases - Flanking Maneuver as Allies, First Armored as Axis, the scenarios that were known to be excluded from the counting for Lt. Col.
Not sure what's going on but maybe you all will figure it out before I return in some weeks.

I won every mission from both sides including all the new ones and nothing happened.
I played a lot of cadets
nothing happened
I played to train (not to win) and voila

| Henry Pelham wrote on Thu, 18 August 2011 13:59 | At least six cadets were promoted to 2LT immediately after "getting trained" -- in just the last 30 or so games, when I was paying attention and counting.
Sounds like I need to clean up those missing sides. I thought I read that some were promoted without every side -- maybe some sides are more important than others.
|
Enjoy your break, Henry.
I've always enjoyed playing against you, so I look forward to your return.
I think the mediterranean ones that you missed are the crucial component. They've been online for some time, so they probably count.
I still can't believe that you have to lose to get promoted. There is some number that we haven't put our fingers on -- games played, win totals, games against different ranks, etc...
Having to throw games to cadets just seems so wrong...
