Re:Western Front Tournament Results Tue, 13 May 2014 22:47
Well, Axis comrades, my first win for us in this tourney, but only by the skin of my teeth and with a big Eimer full of luck!

The replay is here:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=41 423684

General JayKay certainly played and maneuvered with skill both offensively and defensively. It certainly looked like the battle was going to be his but a last push from the Axis left and a proverbial American Football "Hail Mary" brought the game to Axis 9-6 medals 30-26 figures:

http://cdn.daysofwonder.com/uploads/userpages/1210418/_6798_web.jpg

I felt like I "fumbled about" the first half of the game with weak advances in the center and right while reacting to JayKay's counterattacks in those sectors.

Just after mid-game (turn 15) we were even on unit medals 3-3 but JayKay was holding 3 town medals to my one and strongly occupying two pairs of town hexes.

Turn 20 had JayKay up 7 to 4, still strongly holding/guarding 5 of 6 town hexes. It felt pretty hopeless for me, especially with 3 weakened infantry (2,1,1) pulled back into the trees on my rear right.

A radical TFH roll (3 arm, 2 inf) on my next turn launched my long awaited attack on my left and brought the score up to 7-7

I drew an ambush then that let my weak infantry units on the right live another turn and followed with an assault on the left that couldn't give me two more medals but weakened the allied inf in the city to one and the armor on the bridge to one.

JayKay tried a BEL hit and run on my armor in the town but couldn't finish it off.

With a left attack I finished his armor and flung a successful "hail mary" shot at his single infantry hiding behind the rubble. And just in time: he was Moving Out next turn to eliminate my wounded units in the forest (although I see now in the replay he had just drawn that card!).

JayKay, that failed Close Asault and timely Ambush bought me needed time. And then the power TFH certainly tipped the balance back toward hope for me.

Brilliant playing! Strategy-wise, the game was yours! With my big Eimer full of luck, it tipped toward me...

An honor to meet you on the battlefield and would love to play the rematch before the scenario fades away.

Axis comrades, our own mini-version of the ACME Dice Manipulator helped a bit with the Flags and TFH rolls,
but der GLV3000 prototype certainly came in handy. Let me know if any of you want to borrow it. It's charged and ready! Cool

This was a fascinating one .. and as Denis writes, it was largely lookin glike an Allied victory at 7-4 stage ..

I was desperately hoping to collect a card that could launch my troops into the 3 bedraggled Axis units cowering in the Axis right corner .. but it came too late ..

The timely collection of the Ambush and the amazing TFH roll certainly tipped the game on its head ! A fab game .. I'm up for a rematch ! Wink

Antoi vs lucky91 5-9 medals

Victory for Allies Smile

16/33 figs
50/64 dice

32%/52% hit rate

I was very lucky with dice.I killed 2 tank units with 100% hit rate !
Antoi had poor cards and poor dice without hope to win.

But he won the rematch with Allies with the same score9-5.

So, a scenario not easy for Axis. Very Happy but a Great scenario.
Thanks Eric !

Thanks for a great match Smile Again it was not my day, with bad hitrates, but....

In the beginning I thought I made a good chance. I got some follow up cards on my left and soon got the soon and put some pressure on the allies. After turn 10 (also look at 12) my luck over and Lucky91 (what's in a name Laughing ) went on with his good cards and hitrates... In turn 15 I did a last desperate attempt to turn the tide, but it was obviious I would lose the match unless a miracle would save me.....

Quit2 (axis) 4-9 clorofila (allies)

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=41 464382

Match stats: Wim 23 figures won, 54 dice rolled, 43% hit rate. clorofila 22 figures won, 50 dice, 44% hit rate (62% vs inf).

I started with 4 cards on my right flank + Ambush - not bad! Wim started with 2 Recons and an Artillery Bombard... His best cards throughout the entire match were an Assault on his left and a Close Assault - that's it! The rest of it was essentially Recons in Force and Probes. Even so, he rolled 4 more dice than I. But cards allowed me to hit wherever I wanted, retreating whenever I wanted and placing my units to end the game with the 3 objective medals. Very unbalanced match.

Wim won the far more interesting rematch as allies by 9-8.
http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=41 464700

Too bad the first one was so uninteresting: the scenario, the tournament and Wim all deserved better. Thanks mate for being a sport!
And again, well done Eric: another tough and brilliant map!

Well after getting my head handed to me by Kellogs in the BGG Season 11 Finals (8 to 20 Shocked ) we played our West Front scenario. I managed to get back some of my lost honor Laughing

Game 1 was close and tense and my Allies just barely prevailed 9 (25) to 6 (34). The score was a lot closer than it looked as I had four 1 fig units hanging out in the breeze. Plus Kellogs nearly won the game on the turn before but missed on two 1 fig units.

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=41 467268

We played a rematch and once again I won by a 9 (28) to 6 (18) score.

You did forget to mention that you are an excellent player who knows how to expand a slight advantage into an even bigger one.
A small card advantage became a large tactical advantage in the field, which forced me to play instead of slowly building a better hand of cards.

No indeed.

Kellogs is a very strong player who put the hammer down on my hapless Russians. This left me with the sickle which I think was sick or at least very dull and rusted Smile Now I have to root for the player who knocked me off to win it all - go Kellogs - two more matches to win for all the glory Very Happy

Report from the front : A new victory for Axis ! Very Happy

We played yesterday night with Michele :

Michelecannone : 6 med , Droopy007 : 9 med
http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=41 497766

Unfortunately, I made the screenshot, but forgot to save it... So from memory only.

That was a strange game, with capricious dice. We both ended the game with better percentage on armor than on infantry (which doesn't happen so often Confused ). It was I think : Michele, 42% inf, 45% armor, me : 38% inf, 42% armor, or close to this... From turn 3 to 5, 1 full armor died per turn Shocked , one with 3 dice without retreat, 2 with 6 dice...
It cleared pretty quicly my left flank, and Michele's right...
I had a very long streak on my left, that won the match for me. I saw in the replay, after guessing as much during the game, that Michele had quite the trouble with cards in the end of the game.
Still, it was a difficult battle, with great loss on both sides, to take control of the town next to the canal.
Nice battle !

We played the rematch too, Michele won it 9/4. I was the one who struggled with cards in this one... Still a well deserved victory for Michele !
http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=41 498239

Thanks for the match, that was really nice ! Look forward to a new match Michele Smile

Congrats on the map Eric, another very interesting one !!

Go Axis !! Have fun everyone Very Happy

A victory for allied troops Smile

Junior72 - Jeronimon : 9-3 (24-21)

the screenshot :

http://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/17/90/18/47/carent11.jpg

Without good cards in the first turns, Jeronimon has seen the allied troops arriving quickly to defend successfully Carentan...

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=41 510598

In the 2nd game, Jeronimon won with allied too, 9-5, with a high rate vs axis panzer.

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=41 510986

Thanks to Jeronimon, a very nice opponent,
I will see you probably at the french Open, in Bénouville near Caen ("Pegasus Bridge"), in 12 days Smile

Well, another Allied victory, 9-5 vs. Dugrim.

Dice were equal 56 to 55 me, but hit % (50 to 40 overall) and retaining all 3 victory objectives was the difference.

We did not get a chance to play a return game.

As junior stated: very nice games.

And indeed the tourney game did to start hopefully for me. I started out with three recons a sandbags and a direct from HQ. I decided to play the four "bad" cards first to play my hand, but that allowed Junior to get almost all his units of the baseline so they could join in the battle later. Good tactics by Junior72!

If only I had managed to push Junior out of one of the objectives one turn earlier I could have made more use of the hand I had built. But he expertly destroyed enough units to win before I could start my push to victory. I still had so much plans when my opponent clinched the match. Wink

Well played and see you at Pegasus bridge!

Battle report :

Counterattack at Carentan

Vercingetorix1302 (Axis) 9 medals 37 kills
Buidheo (Allies) 6 medals 21 kills

I moved my engineer unit into the center so I could play a massed infantry assault to get close to the cities and (try to) create havoc. But it wasn't as big a succes as I wished for.

By round 12 we both had 3 medals in hand, but then Buidheo took the lead with 6-3 medals. I retaliated and took two medals. But this was but a prelude for my armour assault, which yielded 2 medals and leaving Buidheo without any armour on his right and center.

It took one more round to kill two more infantry units and finishing the game.

To summarize : I won this battle because I could roll more dice (and thus scored more hits).

Afterwards we played a rematch and Buidheo totally ran me over. I luck I had (and he missed) in the first battle was totally gone.

Once again, a very big thank you to LooneyLlama for another great scenario. No kidding, I really enjoy your work! Keep it up Very Happy

I am really looking forward to the next scenario's.

For those who like to see for themselves :

Sorry, Fred Flintstone, have to rain on your parade, an ALLIES victory...

Gonzalan VS JAParker, 9 - 4, 23-18 figs

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=41 571062

Just like Fred, got my 1st win and 3rd time was the charm.

John starts slowly and I rush forward on my LEFT and commence an attack on that flank and he responds in kind and we fight it out over the 1st few turns, going back and forth on my LEFT and CENTER and 1/2 way in the count stands at 3-3, mine consisting of the medals A, B and C and he having 2 kills and A.

A few more turns in close quarters with an M/O and a CLOSE ASLT and COUNTER and be both miss our fair share and all that close combat results in hot barrels, a 4-4 score and nothing more!!

Finally, after a ATTACK 3 on my LEFT, 3 kills and some breathing room on that FLANK, he loses Town C and suddenly I am up 7-3 and he is down to 1 unit hidden in the forest, an SF Unit mind you.

A tough closing quarter of the game, needing 2 kills more and to hold the towns....I do and eventually get a pesky 1 fig unit on my RIGHT and finish off a 2 fig ARMOR there as well and final of 9-4.

Both rolled 56 dice, INF was 46% to his 43%, difference was in the ARMOR, 36% to his 19% and my holding A, B and C!!!

Both had early chances, missed and went back and forth until I finally got the upper hand with my 3 kill turn and him losing the medal Town C.

Thanks for the match John and good to get rid of my goose egg in this 3rd round!! ALLIES will take the round at worse, 6-5, at best 8-3...go Geoff and Goekawar!!

John won the rematch at 9-7 and more of the back and forth action.

Victory for the AXIS, results for JJs Juggernaut vs GoekaWar were 9-3. I had a 40 something percent hit rate vs GoekaWar's 32%. A tough game for him as I was able to overwhelm the Allies and take all three objectives.

9-8 Gheintze vs. Artimon

Trying to write a description of this game would not do it justice.

Well, clowns are usually sad and/or scary, humor more physical as well, IGH, think he is more of a Happy-go-lucky clown! Laughing

And speaking of sad, IGH posted on the other thread that he is being shipped back to HQ and leaving the front to concentrate on other matters.

W/O him to cheer lead, the AXIS will now surely lose the fight!! 19-14 after this 7-4 round and fight all but over! Very Happy

A real pleasure Denis, enjoy all things non-Memoir '44 and will keep an eye out for your occasional foray on to the battlefield.

Well done ALLIES!

WOW! what a battle between Sebastien and Geoff. I really like making scenarios where objectives are reachable and fought over for both sides. This was a classic battle where both occurred.

By the way, our next scenario will be up sometime today. John and Jeroen please be ready with your reserve unit. Jeroen, I think it is your turn to make the lineups.

Since the end of round three came so suddenly, I'm in for this round but would certainly welcome any recommendations for a replacement.

Well done, Allies, on Round 3!
And well attempted, Axis comrades! We shall rise! We shall close this gap!

W/O him to cheer lead, the AXIS will now surely lose the fight!!

A real pleasure Denis, enjoy all things non-Memoir '44 and will keep an eye out for your occasional foray on to the battlefield.

Thanks, Gonz! But know this...with or without my cheering and clowning, the AXIS will rise! Argh! (Too bad we don't have the pirate and ninja smiley here on DoW...oh, we do, but he's not as imposing...)

John has brought up a point that I forgot to mention. From here on out, whoever makes the lineup will also select his reserve unit first.
