Battlelore in 2008? Sat, 05 January 2008 15:05
G'day,

I was wondering if it would be possible for someone at DOW to possibly do a brief rundown of what to expect for Battlelore in 2008 please? I believe there are alot of people that would like to know what's in store...

Thank you kindly,
Ben.

I would love to hear a few things that are on the plate for 2008. It would a good change of pace from the Maybe we will maybe we wont. Though they cant show everything. I would indeed like to hear about heroes and monsters. Dont tell use what is in the sets, just tell use if there will be new sets/races.

That is all.

I'd love to have some idea of what's coming up as well.

It's a tough spot for a company to be in, though. D'ed if you do, D'ed of you don't.

An update would be greatly appreciated, though.

The raven is great, but that sculpt is not... it is appaling. Looks like it came straight out of a kinder surprise (or if you're in australia, a yowie)
What's with it's feet together like that, having him in a better action pose would have helped 1000% Crying or Very Sad

Oh dear... that figure is going to need to be substituted...

First remember that unless you hear something from Eric or some DoW official, I wouldn't put much credence into other people's sites. Not saying battleloremaster.com is bad and all, but also it isn't an official DoW site per se.

Don't worry DoW will probably announce Battlelore items as they are closer to being released. They don't want to have the "fallout" of the famed (?!) package casing for Memoir 44 come back to haunt them..and I wouldn't blame them.

We know there WILL be a heroes expansion. As for anything else, be it creatures or some other expansion, only DoW knows. And sometimes that is the fun - trying to guess what that expansion might be.

Lastly, remember that DoW is doing us customers a favor by adding more content to Battlelore. Sure they don't have to - and thus have a nice game go to "pot". Thus any expansion adds value to Battlelore. Sure DoW wanted to do blister packs, but if you read the BL blog from way back when, retailers were reluctant for doing blister packs and thus DoW had to do expansions via packaging. Not what DoW wanted to do, but didn't have much of a choice if they wanted to release additional units for BL.

True. The Raven is a spy - and therefore inherently untrustworthy ...

But has been scarily accurate in the past.

Unihead, your site is awesome, I'm just dissapointed in the sculpt of that Troll... to let that through DOW quality control... luckily there are lots of other Troll minis out there that will make better substitutes.

Thanks for keeping us updated Unihead. Thumbs Up

Really? I think that thing is sufficiently hideous Smile A tad cartoonish? No ready to cleave action pose? Maybe, but that thing will fit right onto the board, wheezing and lumbering towards dwarf and man alike (and goblin, hill giant, spider, mound of earth,...)

The head is fine, it's his legs... what the??? They bring down the whole model. They should be apart and bent at the knees to show his weight. It would be good if his arms were in a dynamic pose too... much like the cover of CTA...

I think his head is quite good/ok-ish and fits with the other sculpts.

Sorry for the lengthy silence, we've been really swamped of late.

We've just posted an update, though not the one you were hoping to read, most likely here: http://blog.daysofwonder.com/2008/01/08/battlelore-of-heroes -and-some-missteps/en/

Before everyone jumps up and down (or at our throat Sad ) I'll be the very first to admit that many of the criticisms expressed on this and other threads (OD comments about the lack of info on the BL world, too many similar expansions released in too short a period of time as far as the figure packs are concerned, the game having not delivered on all its promises, etc... ) are mostly spot on.

As long we can keep a civil discussion, we'll do our best and try to answer questions/comments in as much as we can. We do read threads even when we don't have the time to post, and we take critics (as well as compliments Wink ) to heart, even if the results don't show it immediately.

Wow, that was an interesting read.
Good to get an informative look at the year that went!
But since both the Dwarven Battallion and the Scottish Wars expansions were planned at the same time, I'm even more curious as to why we got duplicate units!
Can you elaborate a bit on the general ideas behind expansions?

Thanks for an interesting year, and keep up the good work.

Re:Battlelore in 2008? Tue, 08 January 2008 20:05
The reason for duplicate units in several packs is three fold:

- Mould constraints: In order to keep mould costs reasonable, we have to share moulds between different figure types. Each unit having its own # of figures (a Goblin drummer band requires one big drum and three drummers, a Dwarf cavalry unit 3 figs, a halberd unit 4), we end up with smallest common denominator constraints on the figures count.

- Scenario constraints: For the Scottish Wars specifically, Richard wanted a significant # of schiltrons (ie dwarf spear bearers), as these were necessary to represent the battles selected.

- A Wrong Assumption: We thought most people would only buy a pack here and there, and thus might not have any of the figures required for a new scenario if we did not include it there. This assumption seems to have been wrong for the most part (it looks like folks who picked up the Goblin Skirmishers also picked up the Goblin Marauders, for instance, or that folks interested in the Scottish Wars have already picked up the Dwarven Battalions, for instance). Our original plan (selling units individually, in blisters) was avoiding that issue, in that people would have been able to buy precisely what they wanted.

An alternative, which we're currently seriously considering is to offer complete army boxes when we introduce new races (ie when we release an undead army, to have it come with all the units required to field an undead army, including its own creatures, heroes, lore deck, deployment set, ...), rather than packs at the multiple units level like we've done up to now.

To some extent, thankfully, this issue was/is really tied to the Dwarves and Goblins since some Dwarf and Gobbo units were already included in the base game box, which is not an issue we'll face with future races.

In hindsight, we might have been better off releasing the base game solely with human armies, as a purely medieval set, and released races in separate army box. It would also have solved the dilemna between historical and fantasy versions which some folks pointed out. Then again, sales of the initial set would likely have been quite lower if there had been no fantasy element whatsoever, which in turn would have meant less ressources devoted to the game going forward.

Hope this helps shed some light on some of the constraints we faced and decisions we had to make.

That sounds amazing - and exactly how I envisioned new races and forces coming out. I would caution against cramming TOO much stuff in it though - just enough to field a couple of basic army configurations. Then a few months later you can release smaller "Reinforcement packs" with more creatures and specialist units. I ask from a purely selfish perspective because if the army pack is over $50 it will make it so much harder for me to justify that purchase to my Girlfriend! Embarassed
