For Troll and Country Mon, 11 August 2008 19:33
The world of BattleLore is about to get a lot bigger... and a little less friendly. We're introducing a New Epic Adventure Map series for BattleLore that features large scale Epic maps. And the first in the series includes the new Troll Creature figure and two mean and nasty troll adventures.

The Epic Adventure series is an exciting new way to experience BattleLore, making it fast and easy to setup and play BattleLore Adventures.

For Troll and Country is the first release of the Epic Adventure Map series for BattleLore. It includes a large scale Epic map featuring two Epic Adventures - For Troll and Country and Troll Bridge. The paper map is 47 x 34 inches (120 x 87 cm) and comes ready to play with terrain, obstacles and unit positions pre-printed. Players can just place their BattleLore units and start their adventure.

This volume also features the new Troll Creature figure, perfect to use with these or other adventures.

For Troll and Country is expected to be available in October from the Days of Wonder web site and your local game retailer. You can preorder your copy now from the Days of Wonder Web Store.

The Battlelore Troll Map Epic Adventure will debut this week at GenCon in Indianapolis. A limited number of copies will be available at the Days of Wonder Booth #121.

18 bucks for a plastic mini and some paper... I've got all the expansions so far, but I can't justify bending over for this one...

I thought I heard these small, piecemeal expansions were at an end.

The troll would be cool, but I never play epic adventures, so I'll pass on this one....price is too steep as well.

This is not what I had in mind when I was getting into a monthly release for this game. I am afraid I am going to pass on this one as well and hope that DOW will put an actual creature in an actual expansion instead of jumping through hoops or paying too much to get it.

Re:For Troll and Country Mon, 11 August 2008 23:50
Remember all, that this expansion is for Epic game (and like the equivalent M44 of Overlord), seems like there will be an expansion every so often to cover those folks who like Epics.

I just hope that DoW will add a helper card for the Troll, just like other monsters as well add the possibility of obtain the Troll seperately. Since some folks don't play Epic and thus would probably not be interested in this expansion barring the Troll figure. And if there is a special hex for the Troll, add that as well as the like helper card for it too.

And maybe BL will then release an expansion every month with maybe the even months being Epic and odd for the others (Well one can hope if that is DoW's plan for a release every month - and at least keep Colt's plan alive as well). And since Essen is in October hopefully there will be some more news for us BL fans (with hopefully some release dates too!)

sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

note how the standards (vertical banners)are on the bottom of the map, where the wax seals are supposed to be for the pennants (horizontal banners), and vice versa. it's supposed to be the other way around.

normally in an epic map, this wouldn't matter as the wax seals are generic, but since you went out of your way to make this an entire expansion line, i suppose it is my duty as a nitpicker to call you out on it.

i hope this is just the image file, and not the actual board

oh don't worry DoW, i still love you. Razz

keep em coming boys.

Well, for what it's worth, it's good to get at least SOME news from DOW, even if evidently it's not the news some had hoped for... 18$ for a troll and a paper map does seem steep though. Then again maybe some BL fans will appreciate the rapid setup with the paper maps.

I actually hope to see more of these 'paper' maps, but I am hoping that DoW will go the route of makng them different - winter maps, cavern systems, large forests, adventure sites, castles, cities, other special locations and so forth would be cool.

I would love to see maps come out with dedicated creatures (as long as they also included any terrain tile and card specific to the creature so I can use it with normal BL), maps with dedicated lore masters, adventure sites (maybe with encounters/events), heroes etc...

I would also love to see a map come out with all the additional creatures needed to play Battlelore without using levy tokens...

Here's hoping they take these maps and use them for their full potential!

Cheers,

Giles.

Re:For Troll and Country Thu, 14 August 2008 12:14
To be fair, I liked the idea of the battle Map included with the Memoir 44 Carry case (and that might be a minority opinion). It offered a new map layout not easily created witht he current boards (double deep instead of double wide but still different than the BL Epic layout) AND it provided a blank countryside map on the reverse side. In short, it added value.

I would gladly pay (at a more reasonable price than $18 as a second mounted board is cheaper than that) for the same format in a desert, winter and shore/countryside maps as well. Give me one pre-printed side as an example and the other blank so I can reuse these. I buy 4 maps total and I am done. I now have access to all scenarios.

With BattleLore, this map system makes less sense. it is not offering something new as I can easily create the same Epic board layout right now (and again, puurchase a mounted board for less than this paper crap). And it fails to give my a blank side. So if they came out with blank winter, desert, or some other neat landscape we do not have, then I would bite (again at reasonable price) since it would provide something I don't have right now.

Re:For Troll and Country Sat, 16 August 2008 07:59
The scenario looks cool and so does the creature, however, the map won't speed setup THAT MUCH only maybe by 5 mins. For just 5 mins and a troll the price is too high, but I have to say if the troll came with something more than just a map I'd love it. The scenarios looks awesome too, but again, I'll just set it up myself using pictures online, and probably use a proxy troll like I did for the HG and the EE.

In short, continue this series but make the map come with something more substantial, and as was said earlier, make it have no terrain (maybe some) but then have like a snow board, desert board, etc. THAT would be cool (especially with undead, lore decks, units, etc. *drool*). By the way, I'd buy that kind of thing too.

I have a question for Days of Wonder (or anybody else who would know):

It says on your website that ''a Multilingual version is available for pre-order''

My question is, will there eventually be an English-only version, a French version and so-forth?

I believe that the scenario notes are in French and English (as was the Breakthrough map with Memoir 44 carry case). I doubt they well have these done again in a single language.

Whoa there fella you're not being the good-humoured, fluffy roob we're used to! It's pretty easy to see you're disappointed with this latest move, but let's try to be patient with DOW at least until we get news from 'em. Let's try to remain cool about this.

Calling it how a lot of us see it I imagine.

At least Eric should be making a comment very soon. (Today - 20th - if the earlier posts are anything to go by)

Hopefully they'll announce that it was a joke or that they will pull this expansion and rethink the entire paper map rubbish... Sad I won't hold my breath though.

Ben.

Count me out on this one. . . or any others like it.

Maybe I'll buy Heroes when (if) it comes out. Unless they release one hero with a paper map.

You could make massive armies with a few sheets of thin card, some scissors and a little artistic skill. There are unofficial stats all over this forum. We could take this game to new levels - albeit flat levels.

You don't even really need that, I'm nearly through making substitutes for my creatures and races so all you'll need is scissors and thin card Very Happy

Re:For Troll and Country Wed, 27 August 2008 22:22
Comeon. If any of you had the paper map for memoir, you'd see that it's actually a brilliant idea. As some of you may remember, I've been printing up pre-done maps like this on a plotter, and I can tell you that being able to unfold a map, hand out a deployment deck and deploy makes gaming 100% faster. I can now get in an entire game from setup to breakdown in under an hour now. They're far more durable than anyone is giving them credit for. And as far as 18$ being high? Do yourself a favor, and give your local officemax/kinko's a call and ask to print something that large. I just did it prior to making this post at my local officemax, and they wanted 27$ just for the printout. The wife behind me is swearing when she had one done for a presentation that was nearly that large it was 40$ at Kinko's.

Easy setup/reduced setup time ='s more gaming time

Cheap (and they're not overcharging you; seriously, make some phone calls yourself before you complain)

Free troll figure

All that for 18$. I understand it's not what we've been waiting for, but the paper map thing is a blessing in disguise guys. Just chill out, and give it a shot. They start pumping one of these out per month, and you'll never pull out your regular gameboards again.

I'm ready to give it a shot I guess. Besides, I really want that troll anyway. Those who have already ordered their copy must be really glad since they're gettin'it for free!
