Who chooses the scenarios?

Good question.

1) We can either run through the scenarios one by one in order for each round (as they appear in the Air pack book)

or

2) alternate between Western, Eastern and Pacific scenarios as they appear in the Air Pack book from round to round.

A third method has been suggested. That is:

3) Let the current # 1 player choose the next scenario to be played. If the # 1 player is out for that round, then the # 2 player will choose (and so on if necessary).

OK, guys. I guess we might as well vote on these as to the method by which the scenarios will be chosen for each round. So all that wish to vote, vote on ONE way that you prefer to do this. Majority rules. I will do a final tally on Sun morning.

Well ... #3 would be good except if the same person keeps winning and getting all the choices ... and #2 would mean that we'd have to wade through some of the not-so-great scenarios and it would be years before we reach some of the best ones ... and #1 would be nice historically, but it would be ages before we get to one of the expansions.

Is it too late to nominate a fourth option? (4) What if each player nominates one or two scenarios, and we play through them in some pre-determined order? That way, we'd only be playing the ones that somebody likes, and it would be varied.

I'll vote for #4 if that's allowed. If I can't do the write-in, then my choice would be #3.

Actually Sam, that is a darn good idea - I like it, I like it. So yes we will include it and I will vote for that one too.

That being said, I think it wise to not include any other options than the ones listed above. Too many options may spread the votes out so that we end up w/ a number of ties.

So, so far the vote stands at:

# 1 - 0
# 2 - 0
# 3 - 0
# 4 - 2

Remember folks, vote early and vote often (just kidding about the often part - only one vote per person please Very Happy )

My preference, from the beginning, has been the Scenarios in order as printed in the Air Pack. However, I understand the point that the expansions would be buried for a long time. But if we alternate, we also run out of the expansions more quickly and have a glut of base games scenarios some may not be interested in - causing support for this to wear down over the years.

What about a compromise between option 1 and 2. One round (all odds), we take 1 "West" scenario. Then the next round (all evens) would be ONE of either "East," "Pacific," OR "Mediterranean."

So something like this:
1) West - Yellow Beach
2) Mediterranean - Gallabat
3) West - Pegasus Bridge
4) Eastern - Soumussalmi
5) West - Sainte-Mere-Eglise
6) Pacific - Wake Island

<Repeat Order>

This way, we are in order as best as we can. We alternate between fronts to give variety but we also "stretch" the expansions. There are 34 "West" scenarios and 30 "others" so they would end at the same time.

OK, an update as to scenario selection.

# 1 - 1?
# 2 - 0
# 3 - 0
# 4 - 5
# 5 - 1

I have added Alliterato's vote (he went w/ # 4). The 1? vote for # 1 is for CF. That was his preference but as he also came up w/ option # 5, I did not know if he wanted to change his vote to that one.

The ranking system seems a bit odd to me. It seems to me that even if you win you can still move down on the ladder.(Because of medals) Am I missing something?

I was of the same opinion as Coltsfan about playing through the updated Airpack scenarios. Since that doesn't suit most I will go with whatever is decided. Playing is always more fun than talking about playing..

OK, so the that is 6 votes for # 4 and two votes for # 5.

The voting is closed and it looks like option # 4 is the clear winner, so we will go with that.

OK, now each player think about which two scenarios he would like to submit to make up the scenario play list.

I am not sure of what you mean by medals (tiebreaker?). If you win the match (after tiebreakers have been applied if necessary), you will pass any player ahead of you that lost (move up).

The only way for you to move down is to lose (still staying above any players below you that also lost) or skip more than 2 rounds.

TC, organizing this is a beautiful thing for the Memoir community. Thank you.

Before people send in their choices ... are Air Rules in effect in general? Or at the discretion of the person choosing the scenario? Or based on the preference of the individual players?

Re:A second call for a Mem 44 ladder Sun, 24 August 2008 19:54
My two scenarios would be Sword Beach Arnhem Bridge.

Just a suggestion, but what would the thoughts be on a league table as oppossed to the ladder tournament.

It would work something like this:-

1)Each player would play everyone in the league twice (ie two matches of 2 games each). So for example if we had 12 players in the league that would mean 22 matches (44 games) per player over the season.

2) The scenarios would be chosen by each player alternatively (home and way type situation)

3) A win would earn you 3 points and a draw 1 point each. (this would keep it simple and not rely on medals etc)

4) Players would arrange their own matches and those that hadn't played for a while would simply fall down the league table but would still have the opportunity to catch up. A time limit would be set for the end of the season.

An Example league could look like this:-

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Played Won Lost Drawn Points
Col Hogan............... 7...........4.........2.......1...........13
Sam1812................7.............3........2.........2... ....11
CF 6 2 3 1 7
Brummbar 7 1 5 2 5
TommieSL etc etc
Lt Rock

Just an idea?

That would be a ways off in the future. Hopefully by then, more official scenarios will be added to the list to play.

But if we have played them all at a certain point in time, we can always revisit some and / or do some of the better scenarios from the front.

Sadly I don't follow all the threads (I try to do, but usually like to answer other folks questions on the other boards).

In regards to M44, I would like to join if it is not to late. If it is, put me down as an alternate.

Without going through all the messages on this topic, did the issue of time difference between players been thought of ? That seems to usually be the one item.

As for maps to do, and to get people acquainted with Vassal and all, perhaps the first match for everyone be a "simple" map to allow people to be acquainted with Vassal and thus not be overwhelmed with all of the menus, etc. Just a thought but doesn't have to be.

Lastly, when everything is set and done, it might be best to open a NEW topic and in those first few posts to put down the rules, how often each round is, etc. VERSUS having to wade through all these messages in this thread. With a subject topic that is appropriate of course. This seems to work very well for the competitive T2R boards when they have tournies.

Cab
p.s. Will be busy the next week for planning a con here in town but should be okay after that.

Since TC has already told Zasdert that he would be able to enter the tourney if an opponent signed up, you're in. That makes 14 players.

What two scenarios would you like to nominate?

The plan is to have one round per month. Real-time games are preferred, but the length of the round does permit e-mail games, too.

The length of the round allows people to go online and get some experience with Vassal before their first tournament game.

Really have no prefs on scenarios...I presume we'll be using Air Pack rules as well or not ? Just curious in case we are, will need to brush up on them since it has been a while.

Thus I'll go with the majority on scenarios to use. But like I said, I would think the 1st scenario (i.e round #1) should be a "simple" one (i.e. one with NOT a lot of different troops, etc) so new people who aren't familiar with Vassal can get familiar with it.

I'll nominate Ponyri and "Taking Ortona" (from the Vassal "Brummbar's Scenarios" menu).

Ortona may be a little less familiar to some people, but it's got some really cool specials.
