FAQ regarding the sale of BattleLore by Days of Wonder to Fantasy Flight Games Thu, 21 August 2008 18:05
Days of Wonder has announced an agreement to sell the BattleLore Game System to Fantasy Flight Games. You can read the announcement on our Press Releases Page.

Why did Days of Wonder do this deal?
We progressively came to realize that we did not have the proper resources to support and develop this game system in a way that would simultaneously please the fans, deliver on the vision we had initially outlined and meet our own internal financial goals; With fuel, labor and plastic costs out of China rising continuously, we decided to face reality, bite the bullet and do the right thing by finding a partner with the resources and a deep love of the genre and product. We are firmly convinced we could not have found a better home for BattleLore than with Fantasy Flight.

Why are BattleLore products no longer available in the web store?
As part of this agreement, we are transitioning our entire inventory of BattleLore products to FFG. This transition will occur in the coming weeks. As a result, effective immediately, all BattleLore products are now marked as unavailable on our web store, as we prepare to ship our inventory to FFG.

I preordered "For Troll and Country". What will happen to my order?
These Troll Battle Maps are currently on a boat and will arrive at our warehouse sometime in October. We want to thank those who have already pre-ordered the map sight unseen, and have made the decision that we will fulfill your order at no charge, (i.e. you will receive a free copy of the map) once the Troll Battle Maps arrive. You do not need to do anything at this stage, this will happen automatically when we receive the Troll Battle Maps.
The remainder of our stock of Troll Battle Maps will then be shipped to FFG, who will take responsibility for the distribution of the remaining Troll Battle Maps.
For European Customers only: We will of course refund your payment for the amount of the Troll Battle Map before sending you the Map free of charge, since in Europe orders are charged when entered into our web store.

I am a US/Canadian reseller and have some outstanding orders with my distributor, Alliance Games, regarding the Troll Battle Maps. What will happen to my pre-orders?
All the details are not finalized, as there may be pricing changes from FFG for this expansion, but Alliance is still expected to stock the Troll Battle Maps when they become available. And of course Alliance will also continue to carry the other BattleLore products going forward, but on FFG's behalf once the transition is completed, in September 2008.

I am a European reseller and have some outstanding orders with my distributor regarding the Troll Battle Maps. What will happen to my pre-orders?
Please contact your local distributor directly.

I am missing some parts. Who will I get them from?
For the time being, you can continue to contact us with customer requests for spare parts. Once the transition is complete, we will transfer our inventory of spare parts to FFG, at which point they will assume responsibility for support of the game.

What will happen to the BattleLore forum and my scenarios on DOW's web site?
We will keep this forum and the Adventure scenarios alive for the foreseeable future. Once FFG's own forum is up and running, we will progressively retire ours, though not necessarily shut it down. This will partially depend on whether we can find a way to export the scenarios out to FFG's site. If not, we will let you produce PDFs of the existing base of scenarios.

What does this agreement mean?
At the end of August, DOW will transfer to FFG all of its inventory of and rights to the BattleLore game system. FFG will then take on the development, marketing and sales support of the game. Future announcements will be made directly by FFG.

What happens to my web code number?
When we finally discontinue the Adventure editor, once BattleLore has transitioned over to FFG, we will also stop accepting any unused BattleLore web code numbers.
So if you have an unregistered code, you should register it now, just to be safe, and use it to gain access time to some of our existing online games, such as Gang of Four and Ticket to Ride.
Note that even if you still have some Time Credit left on your online account coming from other Web Code numbers, the time you will gain from entering your BattleLore web code numbers will cumulate: So don't hesitate nor wait, and enter your BattleLore web code numbers while they are still valid!

What does this mean for Memoir '44?
Memoir '44 is in no way impacted by this deal. If anything, it means that we (DOW) will have even more time to devote to the development of expansions for this game. We understand that some of you may be skeptical, but believe that in the coming months and years you will see a steady stream of expansions (not all just Battle Maps Wink) coming your way. We will be making some announcements shortly, in September, once the BattleLore transition is under way. We will also publish a full schedule of the expansion and base game reprint shortly.

What does this mean for other games?
We have a number of exciting new games which we will announce in the coming months. Stay tuned!

I am angry/upset/concerned and have some other unanswered questions. What should I do?
Please post your questions on the BattleLore forum on our web site, after this message, and we will do our best to answer them.

That's not what I expected to happen. Time will tell if it's a good thing...

The commitment to M'44 sounds promising.

And I get a free Troll and Battlemap -- cool!

Congratulations!!

I, for one, am extremely happy to hear this news! You have made an excellent decision in keeping M'44, it is the better game and has the best potential.

Being able to now focus on M'44 is great news....I look very much forward to what the future holds.

After having a few minutes to think about this... Shocked

While disappointed the Days of Wonder will not be continuing to support Battle Lore, I must give them kudos for realizing the game system would be in better hands with FFG. I'm sure that I'm not half as disappointed as they are. Sad

I hope that BattleLore continues to grow and expand with FFG, but I'll surely miss that DOW touch. Sad

In any case, this seems like positive news for Memoir '44 and I'm already looking forward to the announcements of the expansions and new games. It sounds like they will release a long term plan for M'44 and other games, so hopefully communication with DOW will also improve. Smile

Re:FAQ regarding the sale of BattleLore by Days of Wonder to Fantasy Flight Games Thu, 21 August 2008 18:46
As posted elsewhere this is the best of both worlds.

BattleLore gets a great company who has the same quality of work as DOW and can handle the customer support even better. FFG was always my "perfect fit" for the BL system.

DOW can return to the company that it was and focus on Memoir while still briging new games.

I am still a little shell-shocked by the news but think it is a win-win for everyone involved.

The only downside I can see to this is the BattleLore vassal module will probably get shut down. FFG has been adament about not allowing online versions of their game. Hopefully they will make an exception as this will then be the only title of the C&C system not on Vassal.

Re:FAQ regarding the sale of BattleLore by Days of Wonder to Fantasy Flight Games Thu, 21 August 2008 18:50
I always had the feeling that editing Battlelore wasn't a good idea. Days of Wonder has put to much energy in this game. Even after my conversation with Pierre Gaubil, I wasn't convinced that this game would have a large impact. And you may say the opposite now, the fact that you've sold the system means that my feelings were right.
On the other hand, If you don't try to make something new, you risk nothing. The battlelore game and all of his extensions were very well made and outstanding like they are always, the days of wonder games.
Now you (Days of wonder) will have more time to develop new games and certainly (I agree with Brummbär) create new memoir44 extensions (not too much plain paper please!!) I am a memoir44 lover of the first hour and I'll remain it.
We believe in you Days of Wonder. This decission will not change this. Keep up the good work like you have done with TTR, memoir44, pirate's cove, colosseum, etc...

I don't think they're releasing long term plans. They will announce new games that are coming out and "We will also publish a full schedule of the expansion and base game reprint shortly".

So they will let us know when the out-of-print stuff will be coming back out for us. It looks like those waiting for the Winter/Desert map will be happy to see it. But I think those that are hoping for a map of M44 products for the future will still not see it.

Hello:

I have two unregistered copies of BattleLore. I've heard that if you register two copies of the game you receive a copy of Epic BattleLore.

What will happen with this offer? What do I have to do to get my copy of Epic BattleLore? Whom do I have to ask for the copy?

Best regards,

I have an unregistered BattleLore code, and have been waiting to register it to get the dice replacement and the replacement cards for Call to Arms.

Will that be fulfilled?

Any special procedure to do so?

Not sure what to say - kinda torn because I love BL but alas won't be supported by DoW but by FFG. Sure they have a lot of products but with that comes the possibility of it getting lost with their other games. Hopefully Richard will keep FFG in line and get all those promised items.

Of course, I was waiting news about BL before I was going to order, depending on what I heard - assuming it would be about the direction for BL.

Not exactly excited nor happy at the moment is the best way for me to describe how I feel..

let's keep all my frustration of such an anouncement for me and let's keep going in the right direction. I'll be blunt.

my question is: Is the Heroes expension project well developped and close be released by FFG?

Tom,

I think the better question to perhaps ask is when there might be an annoucement about future of the BL line. Namely if the prior promises might be done, namely with developing the Urchonia world better and all.

Obviously it is out of DoW's hands after this month but sure would be nice to know if there is some items in the works (barring what was already announced this month).

I hope that since all the moulds are going to FFG, that the minis would stay the same. After buying two copies of the base game, that would be terrible if the style and artwork changed.

I too am a bit stunned! Shocked I have about the same number of FFG games as DOW games and they're a good company, but BattleLore is my favorite and I have kind of developed a loyalty to DOW. I was one of the few who was very happy with BattleLore even without ANY expansions.

We'll see what happens. Razz

Didn't see that coming ... I have mixed feelings about. For one, I really like DoW games and feel sorry that they can no longer support this great franchise. On the other end, FFG is possibly the next best thing and they are experts in the genre.

So thank you DoW for BattleLore, you've done a great job. Now you can focus on other great new titles, not just expansions. Games like Camelot, Colloseum, Cove and other C-games Razz

FFG, congratulations with this great deal. Make the best of it and keep the lore alive (that's sounds way too cheesy)

Man sorry to hear its moving to new fields but FFG have got quite a stable of lines hope they can do it justice.

Where will I host my campaign/ race stuff now!
And I guess that the online game isn't going to happen >snff<

How many folks are going to go to FFG forums? It would be a shame not to hear from you anymore (I've just registered in prperation..)

Hi ColtsFan76,

FFG will probably ask that the BL Vassal module be modified so that owning a copy of the game is necessary to play, but they won't shut it down, if their current policy for Twilight Imperium III is any indication.

FFG allows TI3 Vassal, play-by-forum (they even provide the forum!), play by Wiki, etc. They let us reproduce, for the purpose of online games, the rules, the game pieces, the art and some of the playing cards, but not the text for the action cards and policy cards (some 200 cards), so owning a copy of the game is required to play. It is a very minor hassle, really.

I can see something like that working fine for BL.

FFG also have a strong rpg line uptoo (Call of Cthulu, Warhammer range) so we could see the rpg spin off too which would really allow for some real depth to the world (as well as rake in money from pocket from expansions and the rpg)

Perhaps I'll leave my frothing to elsewhere.

Please make something about the good fun scenarios out there. I have a lot of them printed but it would be a real shame if we cannot find anymore the war of the roses campaign or some other excellent adventures out there.

I hope that the creators of the good scenarios will save the pdf files of their adventures and make them available on the FFG forums.

Is FFG going to use the adventure editor or not?

I will repeat myself and say that it would be a real shame to lose all the fan created scenarios out there.....

Serb, I sure hope that all the hard work the various people have done on BL Vassal (I think Colt I know has done most of the images, Brummbar (early on for BL) as well as other who I cannot think of at the time). Hopefully FFG will factor that in and maybe be there will be exception to the rule (i.e. future cards can't have text, etc). Obviously it be a while before FFG gets to rule on something like that.

Of course, it would be nice if FFG had a "point person" to contact for BL as well just like we had Eric, Mark, etc in regards to items here. Since based on the reports at FFG, it seems customer contact from FFG on the forums is basically non-existant. That would be a shame.

Just hope something new comes out soon - even if it just a small expansion, just to get people excited again for BL. I know that is probably wishful thinking but one can hope.

It would be a shame to lose all the adventures, the adventure editor as well as the compendiums on the lore cards and creatures. Of course anything that is similiar would be great.

Maybe we should start some sort of project to save the adventure files into PDF format ?? Since I think that format seems to be the best way to save, although the text on page #2 is very small, depending on how much text is there.

Or if it is possible, to have some go between person from FFG and DoW that could at least give some update on how it is going on transfering the adventure files.

Even though DoW no longer will have association with BL, I don't think DoW would want BL to "die" since it was a very good game initially for DoW.

Hopefully we'll hear something in the coming days / weeks.

I guess that we'll probably never know the answer to this question, but I wonder how long this sale was in the works. Everything on the website last week about the expansion implies that DOW was with BattleLore for the long haul. The Epic Adventure map is set up as a series of Adventures.

I wonder if the public outcry pushed DOW to sell BattleLore. Don't know if that's good or bad...

I'm still cautiously optimistic, but anxious to see how FFG answers some of these questions.

hmm - i'm mixed on this news. While FFG should be able to give battelore the attention it deserves, in the past FFG have had lots of 'promotional' and 'limited edition' type add-ons. I don't wanna see BL head down this road, there's nothing worse than out-of-print expansions which sell for a mint on ebay Crying or Very Sad

Wow I am .... I dunno... shocked - surprised... ?
Some of you may know me - and I've purposefully held off commenting on the Troll Map and the current state of expansions. I was growing very unhappy - but held great hope for the future.

I truly never expected this. I feel sad to be losing DoW - as I felt they were a great company that I was just beginning to discover. FFG is great too - I own many of their games. Time will tell if this is good, great, or bad. My hopes are for the future of the BL system.

Whatever the result - Thanks to DoW for the great game which I have not even begun to exhaust all the possibilities and which lends itself so well to customization - especially with the wealth of 15mm minis on the market.

Cheers,

~ CEG

Wow.. I didn't see that coming. At least now BattleLore will get the attention it deserves and we will hear more about it's development. I just hope the art style and the light feel of the game stays the same.

Thanks for at least acknowledging BattleLore turned out to be a bigger product to handle with the current staff. Hopefully now you will be able to give your other games the attention they deserve. I sincerely think this is for the best.

Thank you for all the hard work put into this in the meantime.

Oh my god,

I am shocked! I already posted my frustrations in the german Forum. I hope, FFG will keep the system on and on...

But, I have some Questions:
What will happen to the Fan-Sites? Mem is online, but what will happen to the Battlelore-Fan-Sites? And Ticket to ride? Will there be hope at FFG? And what will happen, if FFG would not create a "scenarioplattform"? Will there be the chance to get the pdfs, or should we save all of them now?
The best solution would be, to transport the hole Forum. I am just thinking of further questions for the game. Here in the Forum are a lot of answers. Hope for the best in near future!

Fear not, it's a win-win for Richard and the fans. I'm sure Richard's continued involvement will secure the continuity of style and substance that we all hope for, and who knows what additional wonders FFG's ideas machine may be able to add?

A potentially massive product in the hands of a relatively young organisation can be a recipe for financial disaster, so it's a shrewd sale I think - I'd love to know the financial details! Laughing But, regardless of Eric's hard-headed business acumen, he's also clearly passionate about games and must be feeling some sense of loss at this time. Ah well, all of our children leave home sooner or later. C'est la vie!

Congratulations all round in the meantime I guess, and no less to we fans whether casual or passionate, who've played no small part in making this game a desirable proposition for FFG Very Happy

Sounds like a great decision to me.

I hope that the next 2 years can be happier times than the 2 just gone for DoW.

I, like many others, look forward to a time when DoW truly shines again.

Viva Memoir too - I look forward to some exciting news on this front in the near future. Very Happy

Hi Battler,

sadly it's not a win-win-situation for the european fans. I don't know the french release, but the german situation isn't well as the american.

In germany the FFG-Releases take a long time till the german translation. And nobybody says, wether or not will be published further german releases.

Big ??? for all german fans.

I have an unregistered BattleLore code, and have been waiting to register it to get the dice replacement and the replacement cards for Call to Arms.

Will that be fulfilled?

Any special procedure to do so?

As indicated in the missing parts section, we will replace your dice and Call to Arms cards, if you use our Contact Us page and mention what you need. Simply also registered your BattleLore code before contacting us.

Eric

is that the same with Memoir 44? I have 2 Memoir 44 copies and an Eastern front copy. Dices of older copy are getting old: black tanks on them are fading away Sad
