Guadalcanal - Struggle for Henderson Airfield - New Campaign! Fri, 14 August 2009 17:19
Guadalcanal, 1942. Take command of the US Marines, as they fend off charge after charge, or fight as the Imperial Japanese Army as they try to recapture Henderson Airfield!

I heard some issues about the new Campaign Book, which should contain a Pacific Campaign...well, here you are, you may taste it, with some brand-new scenarios about Henderson Airfield! Smile Have fun!

Well, I'm still on vacation, and I would be bored, if I wouldn't do something! Very Happy

I know the feeling! Being a teacher I have the same vacation as my students and I had a Memoir '44 project to work on most of the summer too. Look for more information about it in the next week or so! Wink

As a kid I spent a lot of my summer working on a different game called Champions. It was an RPG and I spent hours designing characters and scenarios to play with my brother. At least with Memoir '44 you're learning about history! Keep up the good work and enjoy the rest of your vacation! Very Happy

AAR:

Americans rolled Fatal Accident, so -1 card for Tenaru and Bloody Ridge.

Japanese rolled US hits the 'Tokio Express', so no Artillery...damn.

Tenaru:
Japanese forces pushed forward with the Engineers in the center, and have charged against artillery in traditional Banzai! style - however, no luck.
Americans slowly gained the upper hand in the hand-to-hand fighting, firstly eliminating the Engineers, and so on.
5-4 the score until now.
Japanese call in air support, and a Zero is chasing a one-figured Marine, which tries to evade the Zero's Kamikaze action.

Marine - 2 hexes/turn

Zero - 4 hexes/turn

Guess, which one was the faster? Very Happy

5-5. US rebuilds the line at Aligator Creek, then assaults, with no luck. At the same time, 2 Marines are chasing an underpowered IJA unit, and they succeed.

6-5, American victory.
Reserves: 3 American, 1 Japanese (due to calling in a mortar unit! first time in the Pacific! Shocked )

Bloody Ridge:

Japanese Victory event Roll resulted in the quick breakdown of a US gun (sic), so the assault quickly gained ground, eliminating many underpowered Marines.

The Marines used their last forces to launch an all-out counter-offensive, which drove the Japanese back for a short period.
Using a P-40 Warhawk, pinning down some Japanese (even the fanatical ones must respect the US Air Force!), and then eliminated with Marine support. 4-4

Japanese used a BEL, but with no luck. No hits.

Marines again tried to attack further on, but no effect.

In the end, the Japanese used their superior firepower, and overran 1-figured Marines, who were mercilessly killed.

6-4

Reserves:

3 American (no luck in rolling at least an Infantry unit! Dammit! Mad)
1 Japanese

Tips:
1.I advise the Marine Player to call in as much reserves as he can to stop the Japanese onslaught! In my situation, they've lost, because their artillery broke down...and no luck in the reserves also!
2.When you see, that your opponent lacks infantry who are advancing, launch your offensive against those tired fanatics!

Henderson Airfield - Kawaguchi's Assault:

Marine's morale downed, +1 Victory Event. Artillery breakdown again (no luck for the poor Marines Sad ), but still, the Japanese almost lost.

Kawaguchi used it's underpowered infantrymen to storm American positions, but soon found out, that they're much more harder to penetrate, than on Bloody Ridge. Congratulations for Gen. Vandegrift on fortificating so hard.

However, with the support of a Zero, the tide quickly turned:
Kamikaze on the Marine in the center in only sandbags, then a charge against marines in the jungle near the airfield. They've survived.
3-2

At the same time, Gen. Vandegrift ordered precise firing on Oka's infantrymen (range 3, +1 die due to Vandegrift bonus).

On the left flank to save the situation, the P-38 Recon Plane strafed some men of Kawaguchi, then tried to gain Intel about his forces (recon) + Marines counter-fire made the situation for the Japanese pretty uncomfortable.
3-3

Japanese rushed against the Airfield's Depot, trying to seize it, but only gained the medal for controlling the airfield.

4-3

Americans tried to use the Recon plane, but soon found out, that it is vulnerable against even Japanese rifles (air check: grenade).

5-3

Final Score:
6-5
4-6
3-5

16-13 Japanese Minor Victory
(Japanese Objective Track +1 Objective = 0 Points)

I had fun, and I wish everybody else to have fun in this campaign! Very Happy
