I think it is helpful to cool the opponents HOT dice to make him wait a bit for his medal. So leave it in...

I am not a beta tester, but Stevens suggested I post my suggestion here. I hope you will forgive my impertinence and also the half-baked nature of my suggestion. It was an idea that came up in response to another's post and I haven't taken the time to refine it or think through all of its ramifications:

The problem, at least to my way of thinking, is that the system requires far too much paperwork to keep track of which types of games I have played. I initially went through each and every game. This was easy to do because the computer provided me with an "unplayed games" filter. After that, I was on my own.

I would like to see DoW add filters along these lines

- Unplayed games
-Games where you haven't won
-Games where you haven't won the match
-Games where you haven't won both sides
-Games where you haven't simultaneously won both sides in a single match

I know that I would use such filters to play multiple games over multiple fronts until I had become the master of them all. I think that many others would do so too.

If playing against higher qualified opponents is a prerequisite to promotion, then that too should be added as a filter. For example, there could be filters like:

-Show Players who you outrank
-Show Players who have the same rank as you
-Show Players who have a similar rank as you
-Show Players who outrank you

Such filters would allow me to challenge myself and would also force me to play scenarios that I might not otherwise play or might even actively avoid. It has been my experience that a bad game can unjustly sour me on a scenario. When I force myself to master a scenario, I often find subtle nuances and undiscovered treasures that make the scenario a treat to play. My hope is that these types of filter will allow Memoir to challenge themselves while simultaneously broadening their scope of as well as their increasing their experience with a wide variety of game scenarios.

Thank you for your consideration of this suggestion.

Yes, I thought these were good ideas and so I will vouch for Falkirk's suggestions. Thanks for your time and effort in considering them...

I'd like to know how to identify when DOW member players are online, and how we can invite them to a battle. Or get invited as the case may be.

Do you ever announce mini-tournaments? If so how about an "Us vs. Them" challenge?

Re:Feature Request Log - Requests Only Please! Wed, 03 August 2011 18:09
I would like the following features:
- When you get an invitation, and you want to decline, that you can give a decline reason, which would be shown to the invitor with the message of you declining.
This way you could decline an invitation in a more polite way. Sometimes I'm waiting for a friend, and get an invitation from someone else. Putting myself invisible is not the good option, because then my friend cannot "ring" me when he gets in the game, because he cannot see me either, but I might not see him because I might be in here posting something on the forum while I wait.
- Change the settings for ambush during the game: could this be possible?

A bit larger features:
- could there be a way to implement the possibility to watch a game? And chat with the players playing the game.
- could you make it possible to see who's online while you are playing a game, and possibly chat with the lobby?

Consistent profile info wanted!

I LOVE the way you get info about enemy's and yourself in M44 online. But i feel there are a lot of unnecessary inconsistent things about the different presentations that is available:
Info that IS consistent in all profiles are in italic.)

HEADQUARTERS:
Opponent info:
Battles, honor, skill

OFFICER CAREER/SERVICE RECORD (Ingame):
My info:
Battles, honor, skill
Achievements
Allied Battles (outperformed), Axis battles (outperformed)
Last 15 days (with win AND outperformed info)

OFFICER CAREER/WAR DIARY (On the web):
My AND opponents info:
Battles, honor, skill
Achievements
Allied Battles (won), Axis battles (won)
Last 15 days (with win info)

As you can see you only get "win" info on the web.
You also only get an outperformed "battles summary" ingame.
But you get BOTH outperformed AND win info in "Last 15 days" ingame.

This results in inconsistency for your own career depending on where you look but most importantly; you never get to see your opponents outperformed statistic which is a brilliant and much more interesting stat than the win statistic.

Add to this the confusion of headlines: The "recent history" headline on the web is placed and designed in exactly the same manner as the "statistics" headline seen ingame.
But they are in no way the same! One depicts wins and seemingly only recent wins (last 15 days or? this isn't clearly announced) and the other outperformed statistic seemingly over your whole career.

SUGGESTIONS:
1. Use BOTH win and outperformed statistics everywhere.

2. Make the web and ingame presentation as identical as possible to avoid confusion and unnecessary switching between web and ingame info screens to to see everything you want.

3. Make the summary box in the upper right corner on the web and ingame exactly the same! Here it is easy to make a box containing both win and outperformed stats in the same box. It's just another column to add to both of them!
Also, add the possibility to (for example) switch between "last 15 days" last 12 months, different years (as in the service record) and an "all time" statistic.

4. Service record/ war diary: Add more records of for example last 1,3,6 and 12 months.
And also; call it war diary OR service record. Smile

5. Headquarters are sufficient, but an option to click on an opponent and get a link to their service record or online page would be nice.

Thanks for a wonderful online presentation of one of the best boardgames created!
I hope my suggestions are useful.

best regards
Johan Engelsköld, Sweden

I don't know if it's been requested, since I haven't read the whole thread.

How about an iPad version of the client? That would be sweet. I see that there's one for Ticket to Ride and Small World.

There should be a bell (or any noise) when a player joins your open game.

Also there should be a noise when a player invites you to play a game.

Finally, it would be good if we were able to observe games in progress. And it would be great if observers could kibbitz among themselves (without the players hearing).

Hear, hear! Couldn't agree more.

Since we may have to wait several minutes for an opponent to join in, the game should definitely alert us when they first arrive.

excellent idea about the bell or sound

When you are waiting for someone to join your game you can't constantly just sit staring at the screen waiting for what could be quite a few minutes.

Usually whilst waiting I quickly check some other info/sites, but an audible noise would be very helpful if someone joins my game etc.

When an opponent goes offline, players should have a choice of whether to continue against the bot or wait for the opponent's return.

I was playing a tournament game tonight when I crashed out. The bot took over (and won), but for tournament games, it's really more appropriate for the player to be given a chance to return and win or lose on his own merits.

Let the bots have their own tournament. Smile

We need more of everything. Things have gotten a bit stale lately.

More maps
More expansions (Terrain Pack, Air pack, Breakthrough)
Online tourneys run by the DoW server

These may not all be features but they are sorely needed

The thing about Memoir 44 is, there's such a HUGE volume of material.

I'll add two more to the list:

>Updating the scenario editor
>Adding the Campaign scenarios online

There's almost too much to do. It will be nice when more expansions and the breakout scenarios are added.

For now, I'm going to round out my board set by purchasing the Terrain Pack, Mediterranean and Air Pack.

One nice feature would be to allow people to observe other ongoing games. There could be a "private" button if someone didn't want their game watched. It is a good way to learn.

That's a nice idea and something that (I believe) players can do with Ticket to Ride Online, though I haven't actually watched a game. This suggestion was made a while ago but if I remember right it's not in the plans, according to the DoW crew.

Originally there was a plan to allow people to watch a battle after it happened, which might serve the same purpose of learning from watching good players. There's no word on when or if that feature will happen, though. Time will tell! Razz

The game uses right / center / left on the cards, so it is hard to discuss the board without the use of "your left, " "your right," etc., and I am often confused by the information blurbs which reference north, south, east, etc.

Every scenario should have a compass somewhere, or just an arrow pointing north, so we can orient ourselves more easily.

was told to post this here....
I was wondering if there could be a small scripted name attached to units? You know...like how the german tanks have the Grossdeutchland Helmut symbol on them, but with actual numbered units to represent actual units that fought. Just thought that would be kinda neat to give an actual unit designation to the game pieces.this would bring whole new realism to the actual battels that are being recreated here. just a thought....
these would be like how they are put on the tiles in most strategy boardgames.

Some of the features I would like to see:
-A way to observe other games.
-A way replay function to re-watch games
-Be able to zoom in on the cards that are in your hand.
-A Undo button in the movement phase.
-A surrender button incase some one has to leave for an emergency.

Doing a right-click and hold your mouse button down over one of the board's hexes will show

Mac Users who did not configure their mouse for right-click may use the Control key + click
instead.
Also, doing a right-click on a card in your hand, at the bottom of the screen, will automatically
zoom in and show you this card at full-size.

Now that I've played 243 battles, I thought I'd read this whole thread and reply.

2) Allow the text window (flags, take ground etc) and the card choice after a Recon, to be movable. I need to see the area behind these pop-ups before making the decision sometimes.
4) Show the number of cards left in the deck.
5) Allow text typed during the battle to be seen in the battle summary at the end. Often I am halfway through typing something when the battle ends and I have to start again.
6) Allow us to view the map again after the battle has ended (for reviews) or even better allow replays.
8) Allow the card placement and turn-over animation to be turned off in our settings (I think it just slows things down).
9) Make the Grit ability of the Commonwealth (English) to be automatic - I can't see why anybody would want to decline that opportunity!

2) I agree - had same problem.
4) Important for Vassieux, not needed elsewhere. Turn count during game would be better - and deck could be inferred.
5) Agreed. I can see it after exiting...
6) Yeah, I'd like to see that sometimes.
8) Or like a flash or a blink instead. The current sound is helpful. I think someone said put "Your Turn" in the dialog box.
9) Disagree. May need to avoid a retreat flag for Close Assault or other card.

Phread wrote on Tue, 12 July 2011 19:06

Don't ask if a retreat flag should be ignored when the final figure is eliminated.

I agree - it's tedious and unnecessary.

I strongly agree for more scenarios: my favorite scenarios were Terrain Pack + Relief of Pieper + Po Valley. I'm still learning Winter Wars and would like to play them, too. If you don't want newbies to play some for free, you could LOCK THEM or put them in SFTF so only "experts" who've paid can play them. Let's move the bogus scenarios that don't count for promotion to Lt. Colonel to be locked or moved, too.

Breakthrough and Overlord would be great, but seem to require a lot more work. I expect them to cost more GIs and be locked or set for "experts" only.

Agreed. I don't want to play the bot, or have my opponent disadvantaged because the bot acted on his turn, before I could exit. I hated it when I got "kicked out" on the first turn, and my opponent played the bot the whole game and got credit for a win against me.

I Agree - haven't got the DOW achievement badge yet.

Nightrain wrote on Tue, 28 December 2010 01:04

another suggestion is probably to keep a live update of figures count during the game. This is crucial during a match where there's a possibility of tie and without having to spend time counting manually

I agree. I don't know if a match win counts for anything, though. I'm told your medal count on a loss does affect your rating.

HERE'S AN IDEA OF MINE:
I only have 2 people I don't want to play with, so have put on my ignore list. Unfortunately, they still bother me by inviting me to a game. I almost played before I realized who he was. People you've set to ignore should get the Auto-ignore response.

These are good suggestions -- the bot can spoil a game with just one turn.

In the Meat Grinder, for example, the bot will play Infantry Assault and charge the Japanese infantry down from the caves.

The player left with the bot should have some choice.

I will wait a long time for a player to return if we are early in the game.

If it is right at the end, and it looks like a rage quit, and all we are waiting for is the final figure to explode, then I'd like to finish up quickly and be done with it.

I have another bright idea.

The dialogue box,
Quote:

Do you want to ignore the first flag?

is counter-intuitive. You have the option to retreat or not. You click "no" for "Yes, I want to get out of there" and "yes" for "No, I want to hold ground."

Why not make it

Quote:

Do you want to retreat 1 hex?

Or, if dug in, etc., and two or more flags were rolled,

Quote:

You must retreat. Do you want to retreat 1 hex or 2 hexes?

Would be easier that way ...

There is one thing that is particularly annoying and shouldn't be too difficult to solve: when I'm inviting a particular player to play a scenario, other players in the lobby are allowed to invite me, disrupting my own invitation.

How about a way to play Campaigns? Some kind of buttons that will allow dice rolls and unit/map adjustments _before_ the battle actually starts?

As long as that gets done, allow the campaign sheets to be stored and filled out online.

oh.. and create pacific and med campaigns. Smile

DoW has said that they would like to implement a Campaign System for the Online game. I can't wait for this feature because I really enjoy campaigns!!

I wonder if the Campaign system will be an exact recreation of the campaign book or if the crew will adapt it to the Online game...I imagine they could do some cool things with the system! Cool

I see that a lot of my proposed upgrades have already been mentioned. One that hasn't (or I didn't see it) is that when a unit is in sandbags, pillbox etc. (where they have to option of ignoring the 1st flag) and the unit is wiped out, don't give it the option to ignore the 1st flag.

Great game and can't wait to see new upgrades.

Love the board game too!

I made some edits and updated my suggestion list, stevens pointed out there's a dedicated thread for this kinda thing, so I'll put it here too.

I'm a longtime PC gamer, I've seen good games and bad games. I've seen console ports that are frustrating to play because the port doesn't take into account the needs of the PC platform, and thats what this feels like. I've played memoir the boardgame a few times prior to playing this online. This game needs some polish/tweaking, so I decided to take down my observations as I played. I've played Ticket to Ride online in the past and it was much more polished.
Almost all of these suggestions are towards increasing usability and making it easier to get into the game and play the game. Right now the game feels like it would be frustrating to someone who has never played the board game.
Note: I'm playing the Steam version. Steam has many millions of active users, and its quite possible that more people will be trying it through steam than through the website.

1) Menu choices in option menu should not require holding down mouse key on drop down menus. One click should be able to make a drop down list stay on the screen.

2) Tutorial movie audio says click on "bottom left" when it clicks on bottom right.

3) If doing video tutorial, it would be handy to have a replay video button

4) Instead of a video (or perhaps along with the video), far better to have a tutorial map that walks you through step by step for a few turns. That pegasus scenario looks like a good candidate for this.
Edit: Clarified this point to be more about the game needing an in-game tutorial.

5) I'm not sure if this is a bug, but my first pick of tutorial didn't show the 2 screens of tips info after the video. My second time did.

6) The mouse should have hover popup text everywhere, especially on unexplained things. For instance, the percentages and numbers on the scenario screen, what do they mean? My guess is average win and average units destroyed per side, but I don't think this is explained anywhere.

7) When you right click hold on a order card to read it, it should show which units/section is can apply to, this makes it easier to plan moves

8) If you choose an order card that cannot do anything or activate any valid units, the game should prompt to confirm you want to use this card. For instance if you choose an activate left flank and you have no units on that part of the map.

9) No way to access rules while in game. Game should have a way to read rules. Perhaps including links to the board game PDFs or at the very least an online game specific PDF (covering the online game differences such as what shift click and right click do) in the game download folder. I know steam supports a way to right click a game and have special links in that menu to things like game manuals.
Edit: Its been pointed out to me that there are game PDF manuals available at http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/
That's great! Doesn't change my point though that these aren't accessible from steam. At a minimum the steam right click menu should have the option to bring up the PDF. A better way would be to put a button inside the game that activates a web link URL that opens the PDF game manual.

10) There should be a way to access a help screen with summary while playing. For instance, the things the tutorial mentions like the red/yellow/orange colors, shift clicking, right clicking, etc.

11) Infantry movement grid should more clearly show they can battle after moving 1 square vs moving 2 squares. The two shades of green are far too similar and easy to confuse, especially on some types of terrain.

12) IMHO it would be helpful to have a way to take back any/all movement before the battle phase. Like hitting backspace key to take back movement. Perhaps to be practical it might only let one take back the last movement taken, such as keeping your hand on a piece in a chess game.

13) There should be a way to report someone for inappropriate behavior. I've already seen complaints in the game chat about this. Since this is free to play, anyone can disrupt games.
Edit: I've noticed there's an ignore button, which probably is the easiest logistically for DoW to handle this issue.

14) Graphics options should have a choice to skip all animations to speed up the gameplay.

15) Options screen should explain automatic vs manual ambush with a mouse hover text.
Edit: Yes, the online PDF from the website explains part of the difference, but regardless, this should be explained in game when examining that option.

16) I noticed there was a lack of 1 cost maps?
Edit: FAQ says that they may introduce 1 cost maps.

17) Special equipment on setup screen should have a way to display what they do. Preferably mouse hover text, but a click would work too. Right now when I pick a scenario with special equipment I cannot tell anything about it beforehand. For instance, "Hellfire Pass" says it has "desert rules, commonwealth forces, Exit, some symbol with a skull and crossbones that's not even labeled (yes I know this is minefields, but it doesn't have a label near the graphic), Italian Divisions, and Anti-Tank Guns". At the very least a right click should pop up the appropriate game cards that explain each item.
Edit: Yes I'm aware that the box of text of rules for the scenario briefly mentions special equipment. Problem is, it doesn't explain how it works. Like it says "exit markers are in effect..." but it doesn't explain what they do or that you gain points when exiting.

18) Right click should explain things like victory markers that are worth a point for occupying that space. If there's no card for this, one should be created, even if its an online only card. Right now, symbols like that appear on the map with nothing to tell someone what they mean.

19) Game should explain what green highlighted maps are in lobby (they have an opponent already waiting to go).
Edit: Yes I know the online PDF (which doesn't seem to be linked anywhere in the game) explains this, but the game should explain it too on one of the summary screens. This is something that's important for new players to know, that they can jump right into a game and play immediately.

20) Game needs to explain prompts such as "do you want to perform a stiff upper lip battleback." I've played memoir 44 before, but not extensively and I don't know what that is. There should be perhaps a question mark on that prompt that pops up the appropriate card. The game needs a way to convey attributes such as this.

21) The game log file folder seems excessive. A 10 meg logfile for every time its run, and a 15 meg one for every time a match is played? I hope there's a limit to the number of files. Otherwise 100 game plays would be taking up multiple gigs of hdd space, which could be 10 times larger than the game itself. I know you probably needed this during the beta period, but it should have far less logging now or some sorta limit, maybe the last 5 matches and last 5 game runs. Or perhaps a command line switch could enable verbose logging for situations where you might need to track down something.

22) There doesn't seem to be a mac version available on steam. My understanding is there's a mac version of this game, and many steam players play games on mac so I'm not sure why this wasn't made available.

Anyway, those are my observations after 1 solo match and 2 multiplayer matches and testing out some things. I had a couple cases where I'm not sure if the rules interacted properly, but its probably because I'm not a memoir 44 expert.

I would like to see some way to easily and quickly tell whether two hexes have line of sight or not. Granted usually this is trivial, but every time I play 'red barricades' I am often wondering if my sniper can shoot at unit x if I move him to hex y. Trying to visualize a line from one hex to another 5 hexes away, it is just too hard to tell which corner of what hex may be blocking line of sight.

Perhaps it might work like this: hold down the alt key, then click-drag from hex a to hex b. A dotted line will appear between the centers of the two hexes, colored green if line of sight is clear, or red if line of sight is blocked. The particular hex(es) which block line of sight will also be colored red if line of sight is blocked.

I would make it so that it works for any pair of hexes, occupied or empty.

How about Free Map rotation? Every week there's one map that's free to play for (insert here number) games.

That is indeed a grrreat idea, especially for TNWOSN (The New Wave Of Steam Newbies).

I don't know if this will happen. Otherwise all a player has to do is wait a little while longer and they'll be able to play all the battles for free. It seems more likely that the two currently free battles will remain the only free ones to let people learn the rules and try the game out...plus their 50 free Ingots...and then they have to pay for more variety.

My wife and I really need a pause button. There are times when one of us will have to get up and do something in the middle of a game, and we do not want the AI taking over. Perhaps the other player should be given the option to keep waiting if his opponent is idle for too long.

I've met a fair number of Cadets recently who don't really know the rules of the game.

Create an "Ambassador" designation for players with a certain level of experience who are willing to help explain the game to new recruits. Let the Ambassador check a box when he wants to go "on duty" as an Ambassador, and uncheck it when he doesn't want to play that role. Make the "Ambassador" symbol clear to newbies who may not have read the manual.

Also, create a simple, easy-to-understand 1-page summary of the basic game-play rules that the new players can view during a game by simply hovering over a button. This would be helpful to newcomers who haven't read the rule book.

And I know this has been said before, but it's become more important with the influx of newcomers: When showing the hexes a unit can move to, have different shadings for the can-battle and can't battle hexes.

Here are my suggestions. I apologize in advance if some of these have already been brought forward by others. But then again, voicing a request a second (or third) time still serves a useful purpose :)

1) The Briefing Room should display more infos about your opponent, most importantly Honor and maybe Skill as well. If an opponent regularly abandons his games then I would like to know that in advance. Displaying Honor only in the lobby is only useful if you invite players.

2) A Rematch Button in the Briefing Room would also be very helpful. Many players want to play a double and this way both players have to commit to a rematch before the match itself. It also helps if some players have difficulty communicating with each other (due to different languages etc.) but would want to agree to a rematch before the match. Of course, committing to a rematch means committing the gold and honor as well. (But if one players abandons the game the other shouldn't have any costs.)

3) If a player abandons his opponent, the opponent should have the option to continue with a robot or quit the game without any costs to him. I also find it rather irritating that a game finished with a robot counts as a regular, non-aborted game.

4) Not sure if this is actually implemented. There really should be a Time Limit for each player's turn. Otherwise, a player could just disappear for ages and leave his opponent behind who might abort the game out of frustration (with all the disadvantages this brings).

5) Suggested many times, but I'll mention it again anyway. Please add a Replay Function. No need to store the replays online. They can be stored locally and would only be a few KB in size.

6) Please split the Name and Rank columns in the lobby. This makes it easier to look for a specific name and also adds the option to sort players according to rank.

7) I'd propose Scenario Ratings based on 5 Stars. 3 stars just don't offer a sufficient degree of grading.

8) A Private Chat Function in the lobby.

9) Details of Special Rules should be accessible in the Briefing Room as to be able to familiarize yourself with them before a match.

10) How about a Matchmaking Function to automatically create games for players with equal skill?

11) Lobby Buttons to access Service Records and Buy War Treasure

That's it from my side. Thanks for reading!
