Where did you get your Forum name?

Hi
When i read threads i sometimes wonder where people derive their forum names from. Mine is Sheridan and i chose this as i live in a road where part of it's name is Sheridan and also the link to the name of the Sheridan tank.
How did you arrive at your forum name?

Boddekker is the protagonist of these two novels of mine, which were published around the time I first got on the Internet (97/98). Back then it was for marketing purposes, but after that it kind of stuck.

When I first registered on the Playstation Network my prefered name was taken, and after trying some options the AD79 was what I tried. It stuck and was also used for Boardgamegeek.com and I changed to AD79 here too.
The Mr.Bump avatar came about because my wife came home from a trip to England when I had amased enough Geekgold on bgg.com to get an avatar and she had bought some Mr.Bump plasters for me. Hence the Mr.Bump avatar.

GP is the old myth about how Jeeps got their name, (G)eneral (P)urpose 1/4 ton truck, a GI would say, "Get the 'GeePee' with the radio over here" which became Geep or Jeep.
Also, I'm a Jeep nut owning a 2001 Wrangler and a 1998 Cherokee, going off road is a hobby of ours. BTW - I was ecstatic when I found out the DaD expansion had Jeeps

Not war related but when I was a kid my father was a big Elvis Presely fan. He would listen to him on eight-tracks in the car. (Yes I am old). Being a teenager I rebeled and started to listen to Buddy Holly instead and told my Dad he was much better than Elvis. It become an slight obsession to gather all the songs and info about him. (This was before the internet and itunes- I said I was old). Anyway 30+years later I have listen to a lot of music but I can still say he is my favorite. I use the BuddyHolly name and avatar on BGG, Facebook and various other websites.

When I was registering, the website proposed my first name, with a number stuck after it. I figured 1812 was a pretty good number for a wargaming website, so I took it.
Much better than when I registered on AOL a zillion years ago. It proposed my initials, with an X after them, followed by a number. So AOL thought it wanted me to be SEX7381.

My user name is pretty simple:
Rasmussen is my last name and I was born in 1981 so I just put them together for my email address a long time ago. When I registered for this site I just kept the same thing so it would be easy to remember.
When I registered with DoW I never imagined that I would become so involved with the site and the game...If I had known that I might have tried to think of a cooler name. Then again, I kind of like mine, so maybe not.

I had fallen into the greedy hands of wizard$ of the coa$t and their Magic the Gathering cardgame  . My favorite card back then was the Scragnoth... why? I don't have the slightest idea now.
But since then I use it quite often for forums.
Like Rasmussen81, if I had know that Memoir was such a great game I would have chosen something more thematic.

On June 6, 1944, 32 men from Bedford, Virginia in company with approximately 150 other men from other areas of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and even Washington D.C. assaulted the beaches of Normandy. They were Company A of the 116 RCT, 29th Division. They were in the first assault wave at Omaha Beach at the Dog Green sector.

Their rendezvous point was Vierville sur mer. Their mission was to clear the beach, move up through the D-1 draw and capture the village of Vierville. From here the would consolidate and with other members of their battalion steadily move inland by the end of the day. This didn't happen.
Company A was one of the few units to come in at the right place at the right time at 0630 hours. However, in the next 15 minutes, that unit suffered 93% casualties. With over 90 men killed and 60+ more wounded, Company A was out of action. Several of the men from Bedford were brothers, the Hoback's, the Parker's and the Stevens' boys. Of these 6 men, only one survived, Roy Stevens.
Roy's assault boat hit a barrier device or some other object penetrated the hull of his LCA while he was still several hundred yards out. The craft was taking on water, the men were bailing, but they never made it to shore. He lost a few buddies and was rescued after several hours in the cold and choppy channel. He was returned to England and refitted for duty. He returned to Normandy only to find that his brother and 18 other men from Bedford were all killed on D-Day. This loss of 19 men from one small farming community on D-Day was the highest per capita loss from any one unit from the United States on D-Day. In the months to follow, the cost would would soon become apparent.

I used to fly in the Navy. I also flew online air combat games, starting with the very first "Air Warrior". To Vulch means to fly over an airfield killing anything that tries to takeoff (Vulching). As an exponent of this type of flying I got the handle "Vulch".

...And of course the tank in your name is named for the tenacious Union cavalry general in the Civil War, Philip Sheridan, who commanded the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac and drove Lee to defeat and surrender...
I chose my name because I have a love-hate fascination with General George S. Patton. He was a well-educated aristocrat who wrote poetry and spoke fluent French (imagine an American general like that today), who married rich and could easily have sat out one or both world wars. Instead, he chose to serve, and he served ruthlessly -- certainly ruthless to the Germans, and sometimes ruthless to the American troops under him, too.
He was a pioneer in tank doctrine in the Great War and basically single-handedly kept the U.S. involved in armored tactics during the interim war period, when people were saying tanks would never be effective weapons.
I admire his vision, passion, loyalty, education, and brutal efficiency; but I also dislike his "at any cost" mentality and egotism. His soldier-slapping incident is well known and somewhat overblown, but he is a person who thought PTSD ("combat fatigue" as it was then known) was fake and cowardly.
Arguably, he understood war better than any American General since Lee; but outside the realm of welfare, his poor understanding of people and human nature make him an almost despicable figure. I can never decide if I love him or hate him. Both, I think.

I tried to use a photo from the IWA in London but it wouldn't accept it. Do we have to compress the file (i'm really just repeating what you said as i don't actually know). If so, how do you do that to change your Avatar picture?

I dont really know why I picked funlerz other then its what I use for most all of my account names now, I dont know where I came up with it except I know it was an 'adaption' of "fun" into funlerz somehow

OH my... you guys all have such really great names... historical , military , etc... I really envy you all.
Mine is just from helping some ladies.. they all had problems... and I have been "maimed" by life myself, from childhood until midlife... but instead of draging me down I learned about suffering and how to help people.
the ladies (well prostitutes) gave me the name "MaimedHealer" out of gratitude for helping them.
but some sites do not allow such long names... so I settled for "Maimed".
by the way all the "Ladies " are doing fine several have married and we are still in contact... but only as friends.... I cant exploit the poor ladies

There are two parts in this name. The last part "cloclo" is how little childeren say my name "Claude". The first part is taken from a verry interesting television program: "The teletubbies", i believe it's the red one! For some strange reason this name is available every time i need a username.

You need to resize the picture, not just compress it. I believe the Memoir avatar can only be something like 100x100 megapixels. You can shrink your image at free phote websites like photobucket.

My forum name comes from my professional life - sort of anyway.
I'm a software developer, writing multi-threaded programs.
A thread could be pronounced as a fread if one has a lisp , a fread becomes a phread.
So it is a very obscure reference, but it is unique and like others isn't usually taken by anyone else.

Steve is my name (from real name, Stephen) and Nightrain is my forum name from year 2000 and it's derived from a famous song by Guns N' Roses from their debut, Appetite For Destruction.

I got my name because it was the only thing I could think of at the time. I bought Memoir 44 for myself as a 50th birthday present. So when it came time to pick a name, 50th just sort of stuck. On BGG I am rongammer because my name is Ron and my friends all say, "you're such a gamer!".

Long time ago when the animals still talked, i played arcade games called pacman , donkey kong ,centipede etc...
When i entered my highscores i selected always J from johan and entered that several times (JJJ) gues i was lazy back then.
So here on the forum i took JJ and the first and last letter of the alfabet.

After reading the forum for awhile and seeing all the grate military names, I decided on 5 Star General because I liked Generals Eisenhower and McArthur. Two of the best generals this nation has ever had in time of modern warfare.
I picked the P-38 as my avatar because it is my favorite aircraft from WWII.

I chose it because it had a nerdy historical feel to it (calculator unplugged) and because it suggests a certain slipperyness with rules. Vernier Sliderule is a bit too long but I have used it in some places.

Nothung is the name of the sword of Siegfried in The twilight of the gods, from Richard Wagner. This part of the "Der Ring des Nibelungen" symbolize the fall of the nazi government.
And sometimes, when i play m44 with my son, is it really the Götterdämmerung for me.

numquam retro has multiple meanings for my life:
==> it is latin an stands for: numquam = never ever & retro = back
==> I served the army, there "numqum retro" titels the special troops badge and is their mission statement.
==> My life hasn't been good at all; I made some terrible mistakes. And at some point in my life, I became a believer in God - and my life changed positively => so I would never ever go back to a life without knowing my God as my redeemer.

I have been a wild west fan since i was a kid and a roleplayer for 30 years. When Deadlands came along in 96 I became known as the Marshal and added the UK bit to indentify the corner of the world i came from.

I got my name from this anti-tank weapon they call "Musti" here:
"The 95 S 58-61 is a heavy recoilless anti-tank weapon used by the Finnish Army. It is also referred to as raskas sinko (heavy recoilless rifle), or colloquially as Musti ("Blackie"). The weapon was developed in 1958 and it was given a new wheel-equipped carriage in 1961. The name of the weapon means "95 mm, Sinko, model 1958/1961", where sinko is the Finnish word for recoilless rifle."
I served as an anti-tank group leader in the army, so I used to go "out" with this 140 kg "beauty" a lot  .
