"best their peers"

i take this to mean "beat players of the same rank"

but could it mean outperform -- beat the result of the group, beat the average?

outperformances are not indicated in the downloadable spreadsheet, but they are indicated in the online service record. so we know these are being recorded and possibly counted.

i think it would be a huge mistake on the part of DOW to factor in victories in some scenarios but not in other scenarios. how in the world are players supposed to know which scenarios are more legitimate than others?

I'm not sure it means players of the same rank, as the translation seems a little different in French -- I think that was mentioned on these threads previously.

And as far as promotions go, I don't see much of a way for us to figure out the requirements definitively. I think that you just have to play in all different fronts and against lots of different players (with varying ranks), and you hope you hit on the secret criteria at some point.

DoW has given us a nudge in the right direction now and then, but I don't think they will ever divulge the entire secret as they seem to like making us hunt.

I know it's frustrating (believe me from personal experience), but just keep playing... it's all you can do.

Re:Promotion Requirements Tue, 12 July 2011 00:00
I have achieved 10 victories on each side on each front.
I'm no LtCol yet.

- I have played and beaten alot of majors on every side, since I made major, but not yet on the western front. So I'll be aiming for majors on the western front first.
- I have not played every scenario yet, so that will be next.
- I have not won every scenario yet on one of the sides, so that will be third.
- I might not have played and beaten all ranks on all fronts since being major, so that will be my third objective.
- I did not get 10 victories on each side on each front since being a major, but I guess I'll achieve that by achieving the previous points.

If any of these bring me to the rank of LtCol, I'll let you know.

Re:Promotion Requirements Tue, 12 July 2011 03:04
I was 'finally' promoted to Lt Colonel tonight. I beat a Lt Colonel on the Liberation of Paris map as the Allies 5-1. It took 229 games; 4 more than Turbo. Sad

Turbo, I'm still gunning for your record of 473 games to Colonel. Very Happy

So, I had 11 or more victories on every front. I had more than enough wins over Majors. I counted 20+. So, apparently I needed a victory of a Lt Colonel on the Western Front; which I probably didn't have prior.

My theory is you need 10+ victories in each front, both sides AAAAND a victory in each front over all other ranks through Lt Colonel. I don't think it's number of victories over Majors. It's at least 1 for all ranks. But, Colonel and higher does not apply.

If I can extend this thread out one more message, but this time as a freshly minted Lt. Col, I can pretty much assure you that the only requirement is 10 victories from both sides from all four theaters.... BUT ONLY in the scenarios originally released for those theaters.

Yesterday I had the minimum requirements everywhere, however in the Eastern theater one of my Allies wins was in Warsaw (newly released) and two of my Axis wins were also in Warsaw. This theory had been put forward earlier about the Lt. Col. requirements NOT counting certain Mediterranean scenarios released late. As soon as I hit 10 victories on each Eastern side NOT counting Warsaw or Rzhev, the promotion came thru.

So when you're counting down to the promotion, keep this in mind.

Yes, it was just 10 from each side from each theater for all time, not since becoming a major.

The scenarios that don't count toward this are Rzhev and Battle of Warsaw in the Eastern Theater. There are earlier messages in this thread that indicate the following Mediterranean scenarios also don't count: Gallabat & Metemma, Tunisia, Toulon and Montélimar

Good luck on your quest.

I can confirm this. I had 10-13 wins as each side in each theater without promotion. I took out the wins in the scenarios listed above and was three short. As soon as I picked them up, I was promoted.

I can't testify to the needed percentage against peers. But I would guess that 75% of these 80 victories were against players ranked Major or higher. I goofed off, playing aimlessly for a while after promotion to Major. When I learned the promotion requirements, I at first interpreted them as 80 wins against Majors & up, so I only played Majors & higher (which was good for my game, too). At the end I realized this was overkill and played whoever had the most experience in the lobby. I hope this information helps someone.

I like the promotion system because it seriously encouraged me to explore all the scenarios in each of the theaters. The tendency otherwise would be to play a few scenarios much more often, which can get boring. The experience of 20 wins in each theater, mostly against quality opponents, has broadened my appreciation of the game.

Good luck to the many who will follow.

The problem, at least to my way of thinking, is that the system requires far too much paperwork. I went through each and every game. This was easy to do because the computer provided me with an "unplayed games" filter. After that, I was on my own.

I would like to see the computer add filters along these lines

- Unplayed games
-Games where you haven't won one side
-Games where you haven't won the match
-Games where you haven't won both sides
-Games where you haven't won the set (won both sides in a single game)

I know that I would use such filters to play multiple games over multiple fronts until I had become the master of them all. I think that many others would too.

If playing against higher qualified opponents is a prerequisite to promotion, then that should be added as a filter too. For example, there could be filters like:

-Players who you outrank
-Players who have the same rank as you
-Players who outrank you

Trying to game the system in order to figure out how to get promotions is an exercise in frustration for me. I don't want to think about how to get promoted. I want to think about how to become a more adept and more successful player. It is THE COMPUTERS job to reward my successful efforts with promotions, not mine.

Just one man's opinion.

I am a Beta tester and I think your ideas make sense. So I will be your proxy on this. Thanks!

It is a REQUEST log not a COMMAND log so we are just making suggestions for posible product improvement. The folks at DOW are great guys. I don't know where they get the time and energy to answer all our requests and still continue to produce and maintain good product, but they are to be commended. I am sure they will give this due consideration and if it is not to difficult they might even put these ideas to good use.

Hey Quit2, before you quit, give the following a try:

- Win as the Allies in First Assault Wave (theory that it was one of two must wins for Captain - maybe by now DOW wants you to have won both)
- Gather more victories in the Pacific Theater in some place other than the Meat Grinder (theory that either Meat Grinder is not counted or DOW is looking for more diversity in the 10 per side victories in the theaters - the vast majority of your Axis victories are in the Grinder)
- Play your first game on Sword Beach. It looks like you've never been there in competition

Good luck, you're almost there

Henry Pelham does not have First Assault Wave allied victory either and he's Lt Col.

Good tips on the sword beach (I thought I had it, but aparently I have missed it) and on the diversity in the Pacific. Will work on that and see what did the thing. Once I know, I'll post it for the ones to follow.

Sword beach did not do the trick. I even won it.
So winning each scenario from one side is not the secret either.
So I'm going for axis victoy in a fifth distinguished scenario now.
I guess I'll find volunteers from guam landings today.

I made it: winning a fifth distinguished scenario as axis on the pacific front did it. I got promoted the game after obtaining that.

So to become a lieutennant colonel you need to win 5 different scenarios on each side of each front. I don't know if this is cumulative of the winning 10 games on each side of each front, or if that was actually wrong.

This might explain why certain officers claimed it was not 10 but 11 or 13 or even 9 (did not check if that 9 was a miscount from that player.)

I also don't know if this is 5 different scenario's after becoming major or captain or if the whole list keeps counting.

well, 10 wins each side on each front is not enough: you need wins in 5 different scenarios for each side on each front also/instead

To be clear, you definitely need the 10 wins from each side in each theater (excluding new scenarios). I had the spread of at least 5 different scenarios won and played from each side in each theater before I hit the magic 10 wins each.

And the best news is we got to play to achieve all this. If we got paid to do this, would we call it "work"?

I won it against a lieutenant. I already won against a luietennant on that side of that front ... so that is not it either.
The game after that 5th distinguished victory was again a victory against the same player. So either it was because of the 5th distinguished win, or it was because of the x-th back and forth win ...

Hi Gang,
just made it to Lt Colonel, go team me. Cool
And it is not five distinct scenario victories per side per theatre. I have more disctinct victories (7+) than that in everything except Pacific Axis where I only have 4. So the 10/side/theatre (with certain scenarios in East and Med not counting) seems solid with some other minor requirements that are vague is my guess.
Hope that is helpful,
Kit

That's the trick Kit - figuring out that nebulous last bit. Looking at your record, you already had the 10 per a few battles prior to the one where you got promoted. And there is nothing special about the promoting win you had along the Coastal Road - your Mediterranean battles had already easily passed minimum requirements.

I suppose it's a little silly super-speculating about this having already achieved the rank. But I just like the challenge of trying to figure it all out.
