Finally got 252 wins after making Lt. Colonel, and won both sides of every scenario that counts, but didn't make Colonel. I won 14/lost 5 games vs Cadets. So I guess it's time to throttle the newbies.

If you and I have played only one side of a battle, I'm looking to finish the match, too.

@jfkoski

I would go for the cadets first until you reach 25, that will probably clinch it for you.

Good luck!

I believe the theory is still that you need to play against 25 different Cadets, and the number of games doesn't matter.

"Finishing the match" at places like Pegasus, Arnhem, or Omaha would tend to be a very disheartening experience for most Cadets.

Re:Colonel Promotion requirements Sat, 07 January 2012 20:19
Of course, here is my story; First of all i thought on my way to Leutnant-Colonel (or was it Major?!? Razz ) it is necessary to win all scenarios for both sides. So I played all scenarios and won both sides.

After realising, that for colonel you must win all sides - i was happy and said to me: Ok - I already have them all, so this will be an easy task for me! But then i figured out, that i have to win all sides as leutnant-colonel!!!!!

No, not again! So I played the whole summer just for fun and in november i realised, that i am one of the oldest leutnant-colonels (from the date of promotion), so I started book-keeping again an tried to win all scenarios again... ...and finally i came to an end. But it was a tuff task again, all kind of well-known looser-scenarios, attempt after attempt, ...

but now i am happy to recieved the promotion - and i wanna not know, what will be the next exercise for the next (rank)level Laughing

best regards

Well, there are people I played in September-October on only one side. If they are still a cadet and not a Major+ then I don't think I'll be seeing them anyway.
Sam, your on my list for Vassieux and that god-awful Crete scenario we played on Vassal.

Re:Colonel Promotion requirements Tue, 10 January 2012 15:28
Just received my promotion, and it came as quite a surprise!

I am not sure what triggered it, but here are the details of recent events and the battle I received the rank in:

BACKGROUND:
I had won all battles on both sides a while ago, and I never recorded it but I am sure I played against plenty of cadets during that time. As previously mentioned, I had lost and won against them, and some had received their promotion from cadet after beating me, but still no promotion.

YESTERDAY:
I decided that perhaps I needed to fight more battles after my previous promotion and maybe I just hadn't fought as many cadets as I suspected... So yesterday I started focusing on cadets. I only played 2 battles on Juno beach, as the Axis, and won both (sorry Cadets, I will teach and give advice while I fight, but I still aim to try win - I believe its better to show them how to win. Although I always suggest I play the weaker side first).

TODAY:
I had the same plan, but I couldnt get a cadet to fight me, so I just played against anyone who invited me. I played 5 battles, with 2 rematches. The first battle (JAPANESE COUNTER ATTACK) I lost, but won the rematch (against a 1Lt). I then played one battle, Flanking Maneuver at Bir Hakeim, and won (against a 1Lt). Finally I played a 2Lt (Twin Villages), and won both battles - and received my promotion!

MY HUNCH:
Losing is not a requirement. Having your opponent promoted after that battle is not a requirement. Apart from having won all battles on both sides, there is more to it than the number of cadets you have fought. There might be some requirement to play against cadets, but perhaps it is 1st Lieutenants that are also important or maybe you need to have bested all Ranks?

Whatever the requirement, I have always felt that targeting Cadets just didnt make sense for DOW. DOW want them to keep coming back, but losing to experienced players is not a good method for achieving this (they are too likely to think the game is too hard or luck based). However, players who have made it past the Cadet level have shown enough interest in the game to continue playing, and also have enough experience to pose more of a challenge.

LOOKING BACK:
I have hardly met someone I disliked or who dropped out because they were losing. So here's some honour badges for everyone. I can even remember losing my internet connection once, and when I finally got back into the game - maybe even more then 10 minutes later, my opponent was still there to resume the game! I have played against kids younger than 10years, and other kids well into the retirement, and enjoyed talking to all of them. Thank you to everyone. Now to the bar where I know there are already a lot of credit cards sitting on the counter Smile

PS: First South African to the club.

Dankie. Ja, ek praat a bikkie Afrikaans, mar ek kan nie onthou hoe om goed te skryf nie! (That Afrikaans is probably terribly written!).

Thanks. The double drink and talk of Afrikaans reminds me of a small, conservative town (dorp) I visited once. We were in the bar and ordered a double brandy. But the barman said they don't serve doubles. So we asked for two singles and then poured them into the same glass - his shocked expression was unforgettable!

Thanks Very Happy

I was actually wondering why only 56 colonels are now listed, myself included, and only realized that of course Helcat is no longer in that list Laughing

The road to the club was quite hard. I had already won all maps on both sides before making lieutenant colonel. Winning them all again was way harder than I thought, in fact a lot harder than the first time. This must be because every player got better Rolling Eyes

Jokes aside, the Pacific theater was a walk in the park, Mediterranean was hard but not discouraging, with only Panzer vs Grants taking me 8 losses (both sides) before securing the 2 wins.

Western front took, obviously, more time, and went fairly smoothly.

The Eastern front really got me to take a break from the game, what with 11 losses before securing Klin, and 6 before securing Suomussalmi.

I do not advise next Lieutenant Colonels to do as I did : I secured front after front, starting with western, then winning all from pacific, then mediterranean, and finally eastern, so I got fed up with that last front (can you say commissair?)

After securing all maps from both sides, I played 16 more games, during which I battled 5 or 6 more cadets, one of which was promoted. I got my promotion at Pegasus Bridge, after a win against, it seems, the last cadet I needed to "train" (I did not kept a record of the number of cadets I played).

Champomy for everyone

Re:Colonel Promotion requirements Wed, 25 January 2012 06:03
I finally made it! No more playing cadets!

The game I received promotion was Toulon vs. a cadet. My count was 18 wins (+6 wins in odd scenarios) and 7 losses vs cadets. I hadn't won Toulon as Axis since making Lt. Colonel (or since playing Memoir'44). I thought it was one of those odd (i.e. bogus) scenarios they'd added. I saw one of the earliest Colonels, turboheizer, had won both sides, so figured why not give it a try?

But haven't we always got promoted at the end of the NEXT game after making our requirements?

My previous game was vs. a captain (rarer than 2nd lieutenants) in Saverne Gap (which I'd won before). The only difference was that I hadn't won a Western Front scenario as Allies against a Captain while Lt.Colonel. If winning against all ranks through Lt. Colonel was needed, I thought I still required a win in Pacific as Allies vs. a 1st Lieutenant (though maybe I have already).

As I posted above, I played my 250 games since making Lt. Colonel (279 to Colonel).

To my chagrin I had NOT won all the scenarios I thought I had. I marked an Allied victory at Counter-attack on Mortain, when really it was an Axis. So I went back to do that. Well, Johnny did it for me - I lost connection and my opponent kept playing, and Johnny won! The replay showed he played differently than I would have. So I tried the scenario against other opponents until I won for my own satisfaction.

PS: I did not need a win as Allies in Operation Spring, which was added after I made Lt. Colonel, nor scenarios added a couple weeks ago. Is it possible you have to win both sides of all scenarios that were available when you made Lt. Colonel?

Good luck and clearer path to those who follow.

Why not? the best way to have new opponents is to teach your skills to others

That looks to me as a new theory, might be sound.

Yes he seems to go for short term offensive win instead of long term strategy.

I think wins on both sides of the original 16 battles after becoming Lt Col is required.

Hi There at the colonels bar,

Would i be right to assume that (roughly) the criteria for making full colonel is to play 250 games since being promoted ( not wins), and also to win every official scenario as allies and axis again since promotion. I have only recently come onto the site via a DOW account , i used steam before and all the scenarios where not on, such as goodwood and spring etc..so do these need including. Also i've got a bit lost with the cadet theory , do we need to play 25 different ones?. any help or suggestions much appreciated as always .take care and see you on the square.

Hi Supers,

By perusing this particular thread from the first page on, you would find detailed informations on these requirements. Particularly, you will find the list of maps that DO count.

The outlines are as you say, 250 / 82 / 25 (total played, total wins on the 41 maps that count, both sides, total cadets played)

I'll add that an unspecified yet small (to my knowledge) number of cadets have to gain promotion (i.e. their third win, to become 2nd lieutenant) at the end of your game with them.

Come on, lieutenant colonels !

It seems that this club is steadily losing members, as now 5 ex colonels have moved to some other fancy place Very Happy

There are currently 54 Colonels in the club (add the number of Brigadiers to find the number of Colonels or higher).

Which means that the Colonels' club is going bankrupt unless new members arrive !

Hence, We are waiting for Colonel #60 and others afterwards.

There is still much room in the club, and 5 seats have recently become available Very Happy

I hereby order all lieutenant colonels to win what victories left they need on the double !

Hi All, I think I know the answer but would like to ask the Upper Echelons Of The Memoir Officers Club....Here goes...
On my pursuit of replaying and winning the scenarios , I (on my 5th time of asking ) , have secured a Axis victory on Point-du_hoc, but before my last roll my allied adversary quit and robot took place AI3, ( if you read this you should be ashamed (you know who you are ..., that is not the spirit of the game ), Crying or Very Sad Crying or Very Sad Does this count as a victory for me in regards too promotion???? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Many Thanks Lt.Col Supers

As far as I know a win versus the AI when your opponent is unable to complete your match does count towards your promotion.

As this is - generally - a friendly forum, would you please remove (edit out) the reference to the specific player in your post. I don't know why he/she was unable to finish the game so please give them the benefit of the doubt.

I live in a rural area and at certain times of day my internet connection fails. Sad Sad Sad
If that happens when I am losing a battle it doesn't mean I am a quitter - so please don't publically label someone.

If you don't want to play them again add them to your ignore list. Don't publically blackball them.

Hi Steve,

I appreciate that the comment from the player must have been very rude...and I'm sorry that you were the victim of a mean or frustrating comment!

However, for those of us who have been around for a while have seen what starts to happen when people "name" irritating or annoying players. When people start seeing that it's ok to begin listing players that frustrate them. Then, like Phread said, people who simply get disconnected at key moments are named on the forum.
I understand that this player said something offensive before disconnecting, but if It's something you can't let pass, please just send in an e-mail to the crew about the issue. If the player used a swear word, his account is no longer allowed to post text already in the game. If he worked around the automatic filter, then tell the crew, add the player to the ignore list, and move on.

I would request again, that you edit out his name from your post so that we don't start down the road of publicly naming and shaming players we don't like. If anyone deserves it, it sounds like this player does, but as a community we don't want to use this practice.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation! Cool

Albeit wins at Klin and at 1st Assault ... grrrrr

As far as I know, i've met all the other requirements, although how many cadets have beaten me to gain their own promotion i am really not sure ...

It may take a few more games yet ... as i am also short of the 250 games since my Left Col promotion ..

I'm looking forward to getting into the Club before everyone heads off to the Bar ... oh wait .. too late .. I say, fellas .. hang on ... errrr. come back!!!!

Cheers my friend ... well, the good news is ... I have now completed the required wins on every front as axis and allies ... (1st Assault and Breakout at Klin fell to me surprisingly quickly, in just 4 battles I had them sown up, albeit against cadets).

The bad news is ... I've reached the milestone way to quickly ! lol Managing this feat in just 192 games ... which means i've got a heck of a lot more playing ahead of me to get 250 games under my belt before receiving the coveted award.

Will the expert games i've played count toward the 250 total for Colonel? I dont think theyre listed on the number of battles i've fought, so im not sure if they count?
Also, as i have 50 or so more games to play .. is it in my interest to start playing expert games as a way of heading toward Brigadier?

Or will only games played once reaching promotion to colonel apply?

Backing up slightly :
Getting the wins completed in 192 games got me thinking ... do we know if anyone managed to get all their required wins in any less matches than myself??

I'm happy to be beaten, but also keen to see if this constitutes a DoW record lol

Jim
