Ideas for Campaign Book Vol. 3 Fri, 09 November 2012 06:27
Been a while since I have posted on these boards...

Anyway, I played one short campaign from the first campaign book, and it was pretty fun. Unfortunately, that book is out of print and hard to find. The second volume's campaigns do not interest me nearly as much as the Barbarossa campaign in the first volume.

My ideas about what campaigns should be included in a hypothetical third campaign book:

Breakthrough Battle of the Bulge (Eastern Front, Winter Wars & Breakthrough)
North Africa Campaign (Mediterranean Theater)
Case Blue (Eastern Front)

What are your thoughts?

Jesse, with your great Cassino scenarios as a basis, you could easily create one.

And in view of the excellent skills of some of the members of the community, we could have something similar to the "Operation Compass" or "Operation Toenails" booklets.

Very Happy

I'd like to see the campaign "Guerre-d-hiver" (By user "Carlit") in english.

Regards.

I'll put in a second vote for North Africa and Italy. Also wouldn't mind seeing another Pacific one, maybe narrower in scope.

Thank you for the kind words! Very Happy I like those scenarios and I was glad they turned out so well, but if I tied them together into a Campaign it would make a short and simple Campaign.

Although it could be done, I would love for Richard or jdrommel to lend their expertise to create a more detailed and maybe more involved Campaign! Cool

I haven't bought either campaign book; I've got enough scenarios still to play (official, BT, OL).

So many scenarios are unbalanced. Yeah, I've read the comments that they should be historical, but it seems like an excuse for not testing them. You should be able to get a fair % at 25 games, and a reliable % at 50 games played. I think a lot of people were disappointed that Allies hardly have a chance to win First Assault / Omaha Beach (judging by large numbers of AARs and games played online). I tried once playing for more medals, but it didn't change the outcome.

One of the reasons I keep playing this game is the AARs (After Action Reports). It helps to know I lost on the 20% side along with most other people, rather than I screwed up. And an upset against a good opponent is more impressive.

Unfortunately, not many people are writing AARs anymore. Audie Murphy's been out for awhile, but don't have many. Crete's been out a year, and they don't have 25 AARs each. Same for Winter Wars, many BTs, etc. If I looked up Campaign Book scenarios I doubt I'd find many AARs either; same for Equipment Pack by the end of this year.

I agree about the balance problem. It is especially a problem in campaigns in which it is unlikely I am going to play both sides of the campaign and add both scores.

I don't believe you have to sacrifice the historical account to be able to balance a scenario, you just measure success by what was actually achieved. But we don't want to bring up this argument again as most forum posters disagree.

As for the AARs, I regularly do not post AARs but I usually keep a record of my games and could post them if needed. It would take forever since that record is large and comprised of post it notes in the campaign books etc. Lack of time is the main reason I don't post them. To a minor extent I don't visit the scenario page because I find its implementation a little frustrating.

This is a topic that I would like to comment. Since this is a GAME, I feel that the scenarios should be balanced as much as possible. Yes, I realize that you are supposed to play both sides but I don't like to play one side where you have no chance to win. It just isn't any fun. I know that most of these scenarios are based on historical data but they can be tweaked to make them more enjoyable. I feel anything under 30-35% chance of victory is too low. I don't like to hope for great cards and dice to win. There is a lot more strategy and excitement when the sides are fairly even. Remember, the original scenarios are in the infancy of the game. There had to be a learning curve, even for Mr. Borg, in scenario design.
