Stronget card of all - Out of Ammo? Sun, 25 November 2012 13:05
Greetings all,

I was playing Breakthrough - Nach Moskau yesterday, as the Axis attacker.

We also used Winter and City Fight combat decks.

I brought a unit up within range of the forward Russian artilley unit and as he opened fire I whipped out an "Out of Ammo" card and sent it scuttling back tio the base line.
He then opened fire with some armour and I did the same again - I had picked up two "Out of Ammo " cards in the opening draw. Very Happy

This was a bit of a blow to the defence, and eliciited a few moans and groans from my opponent.

I know it was good luck on my part to have two "Out of Ammo's" yet this card does seem to be very powerful, and a nice easy way to clear a village/strong point on the Eastern front.

Any thoughts/comments on this one?

Thanks,

Fred the Obscure,
Durban, South Africa.

Yes, in some games, it is the gamebreaker. Great i you have it, not so great if you don't.

It all depends on the situation.

I've had battles where the hated Dig In card made the "usual" targets too difficult to be worthwhile.

Out of Ammo is great, but it puts only one unit out of action. Better than that was the time, at Clervaux, where the German player was about to advance four tanks across river, and a single Out of Fuel against the one on the bridge stopped all four dead in their tracks.

Then again, at Rzhev and perhaps other scenarios, a single infantry Behind Enemy Lines can kill an enemy unit, take ground into the permanent medal hex, and then exit the board for 3 medals.

Not the strongest card, because I've never killed any units with it!

BEL can give a kill then a medal or exit as Sam describes. The counter to that is to have an Ambush ready. Roll a flag and he loses his attack.

I might have killed more units with Ambush than BEL, as long as I save it for when I can use it to kill or retreat. Using Ambush on a 4-figure unit in a bunker is a waste.

Barrage can be a game winner. As my friend says, you want to entice your opponent to use a Counter-attack on a good card, before you play one of the best.

TFH can be iffy since you might not get the rolls you need. An Assault or Attack card can activate more than if you roll only 0-2 for TFH.

Air Power's one that you don't want the Allies to Counter if you have units lined up. But it can be a drag holding in your hand as Axis waiting for a lone-fig unit to appear and fall back out of range or move next to another unit or group.

Armor Assault and Firefight are excellent as well. But you have to set up for them to give maximum impact.

Close Assault is often 2nd rate. You could be waiting awhile for 3 or more units to be in close combat. I had one game where it was decisive. In Ponyri, Axis played it for something like 6 units, but failed to take the town medals. I Counter-Attacked for maybe 5 units and got more than one kill to win the game.

Counter-Attack can be first rate, when your opponent plays something that can really help you, like above.

I prefer Out of Ammo to Ambush (Ambuscade in Combat Cards) because with it you may stop attacks without throwing flags (or destroying a unit) and you may even stop big guns' artillery firing over 6 hexes away! And in winter combat, Bitter Resistance action usually ensures that ambush doesn't force your unit to retreat.

You forgot to mention those 4 panzers were ordered by Armor Assault-sorry Sam Smile
