Malediction Thu, 24 January 2013 14:31
Hello

In Tales & Legends, the Malediction card reads: "At the start of this turn, each player must abandon a region.." and then "..A player who goes in decline is unaffected". Based on DoW answer in another thread (see: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?goto=198279#msg_198279), abandoning regions takes place for all players as soon as the game turn starts.

A question that rizes is what happens during Malediction when a player other than the first player, controls an active race and wishes to decline. Does he have to announce his decision to decline before the beginning of his turn in order not to abandon a region ? This is the only way I could think of, in order to apply what the cards reads. However, it introduces a huge benefit for the first player who knows what his/her oppenents plan to do beforehand..

Another (more balanced?) way would be to abandon regions during each player's turn but this would mean that the card wiil have to read "At the start of his turn,.."

[First edit]
I misinterpreted your question... So I removed my original answer.

[Second edit]
I do agree with you, that a more balanced way for the card would be stating his turn instead of this turn.

Though I figure, the cards is more of a "unbalancer" for the game, supposed to shake thing up. Hence giving the first player a proboble advatage.

It is not only a matter of an advantage for the first player. In most cases (especially in 4 or 5 players games), it is not possible for the last players to decide their strartegy until the first players have made their moves and it is time for their turn. So, it is not possible (and not fair?) to ask the last player to commit to decline as soon as the game turn starts.

I'd say an official answer would be suitable, 'cause I do aggree that it is unbalanced. I was just speculating for a proboble reason why it.said "this turn" if it.was refering to the game turn.
Personally I'd prefere "his turn", and I intend to.continue playing it that way. Razz

The official DoW support answer for Malediction card is:

"The card applies at the beginning of the 1st player's turn, i.e. as soon as the card applies, every player that has still active tokens on the board has to abandon a region, whether he plans to decline or not."

It now makes sense..
