General stevens Rules Quiz No.1

A while back I was involved in a desert battle Flanking Manuever at Bir Hakeim in a FTF game. After several turns of moving armor to center and my Left Infantry forward, I decided to use one of my Italian Infantry to attack a 2-fig. British unit (actually they are FFI forces dressed in British costume) in their forward field bunker . Capturing it would give me a medal. The bunker was protected from direct assault by a minefield. Nevertheless, I had the card to do the trick. I played my BEL card moved into the minefield adjacent to the bunker and proceeded to toss my 3 dice.
But alas! "Whoa there partner!" said my opponent. "You can't do that!"
"Certainly I can" I said, "the minefields have no effect on my superior BEL Infantry unit. They will not detonate and since there is no restriction on battling while in a minefield, I am at my leisure to attack."
There was silence, deep measured breathing. The FUN was melting into the floor and a cloud of sadness descending on the game. My opponent didn't appreciate my cleverness and had argued that I couldnt fight. And so, I finally relented and gave in to keep the peace and the fun. My opponent let me retract my card and play another. I eventually won the game, but not the heart of my countryman.
Needless to say, I know I was in the right and wondered what you folks would have done. (Let the fireworks begin!)

Is this the beginning of a whole new sort of 'walkthrough" topics? to easily complete the game???
well, I know I agree with many of my opponents just to keep the fun aspect alive.
If the player is someone i'm introducing to the game its easy for them to forget some aspects of the game with give a advantage to a player. although the game is simple in basic, some rules are not always realistic and thus not logical.

it depends on the game and on the opponent.
If i'm playing against an opponent who is as strong/experienced as I am, or stronger/ more experienced, i'd argue the case, get out a rulebook, etc ...
If I'm teaching the game to someone new, or if I'm playing against someone who has less experience, i'd still say what I think is the rule, but i'd also retract the card and do something else (just to make sure he would still want to play again).

So was Stevens right about the rule, or was his friend right?

it were both logical explanations. one by rules and one by common sense
but if the infantry unit was a engineer unit, his friend was right by rules and common sense

BEL lets you ignore terrain movement restrictions but not battle restrictions. So I believe if you move into a town or forest you cannot battle, but if you move into something else, like a mine, you ignore the mine and can still battle.

Agreed.
The mines are ignored (terrain), the battle is allowed (no restrictions).
Easy!
I would have played on and allowed the newbie friend to learn a very important lesson: the BEL card is powerful, and highly regarded!

This thread actually reminded me of an article in a comic I used to read as a child. The article was called 'You are the Ref'. Every week it set out a typical but unusual event that could take place on the football field (soccer), and asked you what the correct response (to said event) would be from the referee. It usually gave you options A-C to choose from, to see how much you knew about the rules of football.
So, eg.
During a game, a foul is committed by the last defender on the striker bearing down on goal. He has pulled the striker back by his shirt.
Do you
a) Award a free kick, and caution the defender
b) Award a free kick, book the defender (yellow card)
c) Award a free kick, send off the defender (red card)
It was a fun way of testing how much you knew about the game from the rules point of view. (Being a comic, it was illustrated as well, so not quite as staid or dry as written above).
Maybe Stevens, you have started a fun way for us to test each other by presenting various situations in scenarios that require us to go back to basics and check we're playing the game correctly!
Do we need a sticky thread? 'You are the General' perhaps ??

Incidentally, feel free to take a stab at answering the football related conundrum above!

Stevens,
in fact they were FFL, which means Forces Françaises Libres, free French forces operating outside France before June 44. FFI means Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur, operating in France, the "Résistance".
Actually, the FFL ceased to exist in August 1943, when they merged with l'Armée d'Afrique to form l'Armée Française de la Libération.

I believe the correct answer would be "C". Award a free kick, send off the defender (Red Card).
Am I right?!

OUCH! I realized it was not an exciting story, so I added the graphic of the game to make it easier to understand. I guess I should give up my amateur writing career. But staid and dry?

I think this is a good idea, a real way to test folks understanding of the rules and a refresher to get folks looking at the FAQ. I'll forgive the "staid and dry" on that one I guess.
I'll think about it.
Also, although I am an American I grew up playing soccer (football) and agree with Jesse. Do I get any extra points?

I don't think he was referring to your example (which included a map) but rather to his own football (soccer) example.

Yes, it was my own example I was referring to as staid and dry (ie text only) so definately DONT give up on your writing career just yet Stevens
Good work in working out the footballing quizzer too!
I agree too, if we can come up with little Memoir 44 rule teasers every now and again, in the way that you have Stevens, it would be a fun way of helping newbies discover the quirks of the game, and put our much loved FAQ to working use, not to mention our grey matter !
Start us off Stevens! (If you can come up with another example), and let's see if it takes off ...
A proper thread for it would be great, you could always include the original question of course.
