Local Multiplayer for Steam Version? Mon, 22 April 2013 21:44
I know the Steam version currently does not support local multiplayer, i.e., pass-n-play on one machine. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this when I bought the game -- it's a huge let down.

Are there any plans to add it?

Currently I haven't heard of any plans to add this feature. The problem you run into is how to keep the screen hidden from the other players...

In the iPad version, it's easy because you pass the pad to the other player when it says it's their turn and you can tip the device away from their vision. With a computer, that might be harder to do. I don't know if that's why it wasn't included, but it might be a factor.

Are there other computer games that have the pass-and-play freature?

No, there aren't other pass and play games that I can think of, but there also hasn't been much of a reason to have it on PCs until Windows 8 and the Surface / Asus Transformer Book / Lenovo Yoga|Helix|etc.

The current answer to digital board games is the iPad, but it's still a luxury device. I applaud DoW for getting the game to Windows and Android -- not everyone has taken the time to invest in a good port (Carcassone, I'm talking to you) -- but now that there are multiple touchscreen laptops and tablets for Windows, I'm really hoping more will pop up.

More importantly, I'm hoping for pass and play. It'd be an easy way to play a quick game when I'm out with a friend or we don't have much time.

Thanks for the reply!

When I asked, there were no plans.

Also, just because the game is 'secret' with cards and tickets doesn't mean people don't want it. You can't pass your monitor, correct, but some people just don't care if the other player knows...

Could just be an 'if you have it on your home computer, you could just buy the boardgame' move.

Good thing I already have.

You can if it's a laptop or a tablet. I can understand why they didn't put it in originally, but it would be a great option now.

Yeah, I have the board game, too. But pass-n-play is much easier if you're just playing with two people (especially if you want to add a computer), or if you want to play on the go without having to carry the box around.

I agree. I'd love to have the feature, but that's probably why they haven't put it in.

Are there many of us who would like to see a local or pass-n-play multiplayer?

How many of you use the feature on your iPads?

I know the people on this forum probably represent a fraction of those who actually play, and quite a few probably own iPads. If we show enough interest, maybe DoW will add it in. I can't imagine it would be too hard, since the iPad version already has it, so the art is available and the code is already written (even if they have to rewrite the code for the PC version, it won't be from scratch).

I couldn't disagree more with your points. There's an awful lot of computer strategy turn-based games with hot-seat option and people really use that future without any problems with 'handing over a monitor' or any other nonsense like that. Loot at the HoMM series or the Civ games to begin with. Please mind, that we'd like to use the PC version just as a board game - invite some friends and spend a nice time with the game. When one player plays his turn, others talk and laugh and so on. Nobody cares what the player does, cos the game is just a thing that gathers ppl together. So just add it and see the rise of your profits everyday. Look at the steam community forum. 80% of potential customers are discouraged from buying the game because it lacks the hot-seat option. Consider this. I'd buy it myself and even recommend it to my friends. Cos the game is great and just now it's potential is simply thrown away. Cheers.

I swear to gawd, I read this and thought I posted it. HoMM and Civ? Promoting hotseat, a dying feature on PC? This contest is over. Give that man the $10,000.
