Suggestions for best introduction to play Mon, 12 May 2014 04:42
Let me apologize in advance if this question has already been posted and answered. I searched but could not find a thread on this.

I am new to Memoir 44 and I am looking for suggestions on the next expansion and/or add ons to purchase. While I am guessing it is partly based on personal preference for theater or time period but what expansions and or add ons do people suggest getting first as best companions for a person newer to Memoir '44.

Thanks

Hello Duckduckmoose and welcome to Memoir!

To me there are two ways of looking at this - your personal preference / interest and which expansion adds most to the game.

Certainly the Pacific and Eastern expansions are great fun and add character to the participants. Big and bloody battles on the Eastern front for sure, and the Japanese are such fun to play. You won't go wrong with either.

But if you want to add to the game experience then Overlord is a must (but you'll need a second board or find the Battle Maps) and the Campaign books (hard copy or .pdf download) will immediately add depth to your base game. Breakthrough (with the specific deck in Winter Wars) opens up some of the most imaginative scenarios.

Not much help I know - but really there is no risk as whatever you get next (with the exception of Air Rules and the bag) will thrill you!

For me it was always about what battles I was interested in. I got the Med Theatre expansion because I'm British. I got the Pacific expansion next because I wanted to re-enact the main battle from Thin Red Line (slopes of Mt Austin). By that time I was hooked and vacuumed up everything I could find. The last thing I got was the Terrain Pack.

That is a tough question that you are asking. This is not necessary a suggestion but I personally really like the Terrain expansion. The scenarios are few but oh so interesting.

And with the Terrain pack, you could also play (by using the green instead of British army from the Med. expansion) the Invasion of Crete scenarios and the Vercors Campaign. Both freely available on the DOW website.

On a side note, am I the only one here who thinks that both these "expansion'' are great (Invasion of Crete and Vercors Campaign, that is). I think they deserve more love Surprised

No you're not. In particular the Vercors campaign gives a special 'resistance' feel with the lack of armour and air cover. I use civillian / partisan 1/72 models to add theme.

I would actually suggest getting the Terrain pack next as it enables a huge number of the scenarios posted online. So many of the require either roads, railroads, or mountains that I had often found my self pretty limited by having just the base game box. Having terrain pack will keep you busy learning a ton of new scenarios without having to delve into much more new rules.
