  D-Day Anniversary: A Special Encounter Fri, 06 June 2014 11:11
Hi everyone,

As I mentioned in another post the M44 French Open took place in Bénouville, near Pegasus Bridge, a few days ago. On this occasion, I had a special encounter.

At the end of the event, we decided to go the restaurant "Les Trois Planeurs" ("The Three Gliders"). It is the single restaurant in the town (Bénouville is very small) and very close to Pegasus Bridge: basically, you can sit next to the Caen Canal to have your dinner.

There, at another table, there was an old man sitting in a wheelchair, drinking beer and speaking English with some of his relatives. I did not notice him at first, but when I turned my attention to him I noticed the military cap ... and knew how important that was in a place like that.

I did not want to bother him, so I kept silent, until he noticed that I was watching and talked to me. And he had so much to talk about. Joe Riley (that's his name) actually fought in Normandy with the British troops in June 1944 and comes back to Pegasus Bridge every year for the commemoration ceremonies of D-Day. He's now 91 ; we became penpals, because I'm sure that we just scratched the surface when speaking of D-Day, and that he has many things to talk about.

Today, on June 6, 2014, I just want to honor that man, as well as the other men that fought for the liberation of France and Europe seventy years ago.

Thank you, Sir.

Unfortunately That we didn't see him (maybe we where just to busy Cool Rolling Eyes )
It's good to talk to veterans about their experiences. especially since there are getting fewer of them.

Great story Antoine, nice that you got the chance to meet him. Did you talk about the tournament? how did he think about it?

These Forums don't need a "Like" button, but if there were one, I would have clicked it just now. Thank you for sharing this. Smile
