I was wondering how you could be caught in the act searching someone's cell when only one (!) person is allowed in the cells.

The English rule is clear - but this is missing in the German rule altogether: Only the owner of the cell is allowed in in order to catch someone else in the act!

Quite bad rule omission, didn't check for other mistakes yet. Actually this posting should be on the German discussion forum, but nobody seems to go there - so maybe some Germans read it here, unless they know already.

... and got only one blank card, sniff, so this is the second Mystery of the Abbey: Who stole my second blank card? Very Happy

The spirit of Brother Adelmo (star)
Use this card when you are in your cellula.
"The spirit of Brother Adelmo visits you in prayer. He tells you the name of his closest friend in the abbey. This person is certainly innocent."
Roll one of the monk dice and pick a random card of that player. If the dice points you out or a player with no cards, roll again.

In hiding
"Terrified for another murder, a monk goes in hiding."
Hide a monk from your hand in a room by noting the room on a paper and putting his card and the paper aside. If a player enters that room, you have to show the card to that player. From that point on, all players know where the monk is hiding, but the monk remains there for the rest of the game.

A small lie (star)
This card allows you one lie when asked a question. You may use this card only once, and reveal it only at the end of the game, or when another card forces you to reveal it.

The eye of God
Pick an empty room. Each player that ends his turn in that room must show all his suspect cards to you. This effect remains active untill the next mass. (Mark that room with a coin).

We need someone to run Mystery of the Abbey for teens (12-16) at the WBC in August.

The scheduled slot is from 9pm-12am on Friday.

My daughter got MoA for a Christmas present. We have one case in the books and we had a good time. We will, like everyone else, need to work on our questioning. We tended to ask very revealing questions, but as a start it wasn't bad. We seemed to all figure out who it was at about the same time so we had a mad rush to make an accusation. My daughter got there first with the use of a Crypta card. She had made one wrong revelation and I had made two correct revelations so I won by one point.

The cards make it fun. We will probably go with the variant of moving up to three spaces per turn next time. We really enjoyed the game.

If you want to have more fun when an event card MORNING BELLS is played, try to play it like this:

everyone must roll a dice in a row,
depending on the colour on the dice
player may choose a languge in which he will sing Brother John song Smile
try it in African Smile

every language has its own colour:

For example, if the colour on the dice is black, player can choose - Argentinean, Dutch, Indonesian, Swedish or Spanish version.
If another player rolls black as well, he must choose a different language than the first player.

Hi everyone! I've been playing MotA with my wife, only two players and I must say that indeed there is mystery in the game. We know that the more players in the game the funnier it gets, but when we are alone, we play it this way. We close the library and we discard some scriptorium cards that are useless for only two players. We must say we have had such fun!! Surprised

I'm sending this for those board game addicts who don't buy this game for the fact of just being two players.

In the 2012 reprint of Mystery of the Abbey, there are errors in the English language edition where the incorrect number of cards to pass at Mass is given.
Each card incorrectly states you should pass 2 cards, whereas the number of cards to pass changes depending on the Mass. For the first Mass card (MATINS), you pass 1 card; for the second Mass card (LAUDS) you pass 2; then (PRIME) 3 cards; (TERCE) 4; (SEXT) 5; and 6 cards for the last 3 (NONE, VESPERS and COMPLINE).

In diesem Herbst bringt Days of Wonder mit Five Tribes sein allererstes Gamer's Game für eingefleischte Spielefans heraus.

Hello everyone:

New release of Gang of Four Online today:

When you have the games creation screen, you now see the list of all other games that are in progress. There is a "In progress" label, with a completion percentage. The closer it is to 100%, the earlier the game will be finished (note: this percentage is simply the highest score, since the game stops when someone reaches 100).

We are focusing on the bugs now (refresh, start-up), and will keep posting new updates as they get fixed.

We have been building a new release of Gang of Four Online at least once a day over the last few days. Here are the highlights:

- Final fix of the refresh problem. If you still have disappearing cards, please contact us!
- New random generator (should create less Gang of Four combinations) Razz
- Game now stops at 100, not 101 Very Happy
- Better management of disconnected players
- Fixed the bug where the last card could be missed in some cases
- Improvements on the server side (monitoring, etc.)
- Small other details here and there that I already forgot. Embarassed

I ve been disconnected and so unable to finish our game ; my provider s not that good Thumbs Down (did i mention it s Wanadoo ?).

So this message to keep the record straight if needed, as I screwed up our first game but it was 65% my fault 35% Brice one's Wink

I was at 98 and that's a lot but so I was in the previous round that I won. And I could have survived this one too (not to say maybe win). I did _not_ give up.

So my excuses again for the first incident and my shared frustation for the second Evil or Very Mad .

- Fixed some bugs in the game play especially when the next player has only one card left.
- Server is now logging games actions & events (this will be used for statistics and during tournaments)
- MacOS 9 free chat crashes are fixed
- Administrator (understand us) can now send chat messages to every players wherever they are (to announce server shutdowns, problems...)
- Enhanced server monitoring (memory consumption, request timing...)

New in today's versions:

- Fixed MacOS9 crashs (thanks to Dorian for his reports)
- Fixed quitting crashs (thanks to Marc for pointing out them)
- Improved image loading (images are loading now way way faster)
- Improved image caching (at least on Mac OS9/IE/MRJ2.2 and
Windows/IE/Microsoft VM, Sun VM tends to not cache at all)
- Improved card distribution
- Added defensive code & more log to server to catch the missing play bug. We hope someone will reproduce it today or this week-end Laughing so that we can perform some more forensic analysis. If you get it, please send your JAVA console log file tto support@daysofwonder.com. It's the file located at c:\winnt\java\javalog.txt

For now, you will usually find willing partners (a lot of them from Europe, since the game started shipping there a month earlier than in the States) around noon PST, sometime until 3-5:00pm PST. After that, things get quieter. If you would like to schedule a game for a different time, please post a new thread in this forum, mentioning the time, date and number of players you'll need to join you (a game requires four players) in the title. For instance, Dec 24, 3:00pm PST - 2 players needed.
We'll do our best to have some people online then to get you started.

- Changed completely the image loading so that the applet works on Mac OSX 10.1 (thanks to Kurbyh for his great help)

New things today (see also the other bout the Scores & Ranks page).

- The "missed play bug" has been identified at last. (this is the bug where everyone is stuck waiting for a player to play his cards, althought the player did play already). A temporary fix was done, a complete rewrite of the code will occur tomorrow.
- Yesterday's server lock-up is definitely fixed (it was another deadly embrace).
- Some work on the server side (logs) to make better statistics on decks shuffling.

The ranking is system has been activated! (caution, long memo follows Wink )

Today you can discover a first implementation of the scores and ranking system of Gang of Four Online. After you are connected, click on "My Account" in the upper right corner, then on the "Scores & Ranks" button in the list of buttons on the left.

Please read carefully what follows before telling us your remarks, questions and suggestions.

The Ranking Model:

After many internal discussions and simulations within Days of Wonder, we decided to perform a first test with a system inspired by Hardwood Hearts http://www.hardwoodhearts.com/. It is a ELO-based system (like the one used by chess federations), with a Provisional Ranking that converges quickly to a value that reflects your level.

You start with 1,500 points. For the first 20 games, you belong to the "Provisional Ranking". During this time, your score and rank will vary and can oscillate greatly. Don't panic, this is normal. For example, don't be surprised so see a player who just played once and is still better ranked than you. Over time, his score will adapt.

After 20 games, you are moved to the "Established Ranking" status. At that point, the ELO system is used going forward. I might go in more details about the ELO system in another memo, but to summarize, you just need to know that you can earn or loose up to 32 points in a game, depending on the difference between your ranking and the ranking of the others, on how you perform against the system expectations. As you can see, changes are pretty small and smooth, so there is no big risk even if you are out of luck one night.

Some details to know:

  • There is little risk for an Established player to play with Provisional players, especially if the opponents have played only a few games before. The Established player's score will be almost unaffected. So you can play with beginners without any second thought. Smile
  • For the moment, the applet does not update the ranking information after each game. Therefore, it is normal to see your game history and ranks unchanged. No need to rush to the page when you beat Eric or Hadoken Wink . I run a script every 24 hours to recompute everything. Real-time update will be implemented shortly (Brice promised Wink ).
  • As there was not many games to test the system, I used all games, even aborted ones, as long as there was a score above 10.
  • All games are used for now, wherever the "Rated Game" check box was on or off during the game creation. Here again, this is to have the largest pool as possible. In the final version, only Rated Games will be used for ranking.
  • When we switch to the final version, all scores will be reset to 0.
  • It is possible (OK, highly likely!) that we shall adjust the equations during Beta. Your score will then be recomputed completely, which will impact your ranking (however, your game history will be preserved). You have been warned Wink
  • Here is how it currently works: when a game is completed, the winning player is the only winner, the 3 others are all considered losers. This appeared to us as the best solution for the Gang of Four specificities. We think that we should also introduce some modifiers depending on the game was a long and close one or not. Your opinion on this matter are welcome.
  • In the Game History, there are sometimes games will only 3 players. This is not a bug. This happens when you played against a new player who never confirmed his/her account registration. Unconfirmed accounts are vaporized after 7 days, this is why the player reference is gone.

In the new version today:

- Several bug fixes in Straights comparison (thanks to John)
- Completely re-written the close/leave code in applet & server to get rid of the infamous clones or dead games.
- Tentative fix for the mysterious bug of disappearing text. This bug has already been reported to Apple and should be fixed in their upcoming 1.4.1 VM.

Today:

- Help button in the applet (will be active very soon)
- Improvement in the game creation user interface: we had noticed that some players would enter their personnal password when creating a new game, which would cause the game to become a private one. Then the poor souls would wait forever for other players to join...
- Rankscore and history are now automatically updated at the end of each game Cool
- Server last lock-up is fixed.
- Piel Pikul's latest bug should be fixed now.

what happened? Did one of the players got disconnected? I was watching the game with elyah, Kevinmd, etc... waiting to play and you all disappeared. if this was a bug on our end, we'd like to know about it. if it was a modem disconnect, the good news is next week's major release will have an auto-save and resume game feature for those kind of issues outside of our control Confused
