Hill Gypsies score hill bonus on abandoned hills
|
Mon, 06 June 2011 01:03

Hi,
I was playing will Hill Gypsies. On turn 1 I conquered four regions, including two hills, for 6 VP. Then on turn 2 I abandoned the first four regions and conquered three more, including two hills. I would have expected to receive 9 VP -- 3 regions, +4 abandoned, +2 hill -- but I received 11 VP. It seems the game gave me +4 hill VP, even though two of the hills were not occupied at turn's end.
I don't know if the same is true for Forest or Swamp Gypsies, but this seems like a scoring bug... unless I misunderstand the rule?

Your most one sided game
|
Thu, 16 June 2011 13:31

|
 |
I just played my most one sided game ever. I started out with bivouwaking (sp?) ghouls which allowed me to take the top left corner and leave it untouchable. The ai came in with fortified elves and took the bottom of the map. Inital score: 4 vs 6.
Round two kicked in and i went into decline again only giving me another 4 points. The elves continued to expand and increased their lead scoring another 8 points.
Round 3 I came in from the top left with my ghouls and flanked the elves on the right coming in from the bottom right with pillaging sorcerers. They converted a mountain elf and sealed the fate of the remaining elves.
The sorcerers continued to pillage the land eventually turning on the ghouls when there was nowhere else to turn. The elves kept fighting back building fortifications wherever they could and occassionally giving up another convert to the cause. Eventually they realized they were doomed and the dwarves came in cleaning up some of the ghouls, but by this point it was too late. My ghouls and sorcerers were scoring upwards of 19 points a turn.
Final score: 133 to 63!
Ouch!
Post your lopsided victories here and spread the humiliation further!

AI Improvements
|
Mon, 12 December 2011 15:13

|
 |
Found a case of where the AI could use some improvement.

This is the map as it was on turn 10. The white square represent my active skeletons. The black squares represent my in-decline ghouls. The blue square are the AIs in decline halflings. The red squares are empty.
I've finished up my turn 10. It's the AI's turn. The AI goes to the race selection screen. The first two up are:
Flying White Ladies with 2 victory coins [7 Race Tokens]
Wealthy Wizards with 0 victory coins [9 Race Tokens]
Now, I was a little surprised when the AI takes the White Ladies. The Ladies take the two empties and one of my skeleton zones. Total score for the turn: 7. (2 for the halfling controlled areas, 2 for the race selection, and 3 for white lady controlled areas).
Now...if the AI had chosen the wizards...He could have taken the same 3 zones, one of which would have been a magic crystal zone....and still had 2 left over to make an attempt on another territory. Scoring if the AI had chosen the wizards: 13 (Maybe 14). 7 for Wealthy, 2 for halfing zones, 3 for wizard zones (maybe 4), 1 bonus for Magic Crystal.
The final score (with the AI having taken the ladies) was 92-85 AI loss. With the wizards, this score would have been 92-91 (or 92-92). Yes, the AI would have still lost. Even with the tie, I still had way more of the board. At least a 92-92 score is a much better showing.
Also...please change the order of the AI placing redeployments and heroes. It's painful to watch the AI drag one token at a time onto the board...then finally drag the heroes on the board...then, one token at a time, empty out the hero-ized regions.
Great game though! When is Be Afraid coming to iPad? Or more than 2 players?

Strange AI Behavior
|
Mon, 16 April 2012 04:10

|
 |
I've seen the AI do some strange things before, but this one takes the cake.
The game began with a race column that had Were-White Ladies followed by Cursed Skeletons. I started with Were-White Ladies, originally placed them on the western mountain, and then redeployed so that all six tiles were on the one region (safety in numbers to ride out an attack before I went Were). The AI settled for the Cursed Skeletons, started on the southern mountain and, with a reinforcement, spread out to two adjacent regions.
On Round 2, my White Ladies went Were, so I marched them east above the lake, across the north central mountain, and to the eastern border, covering six regions (I would have covered the eastern mountain, but I didn't want to dip too close to the Skeletons). The Skeletons then grabbed one or two more regions along the south (despite the curse, the AI had great luck with the reinforcement die).
On Round 3, my White Ladies went into decline. The Skeletons did the same.
On Round 4, it was time to pick new active races. Looking at the race column, it seemed likely that the AI would pick Merchant Giants. I chose Dragon Master Humans (with six immune White Ladies on the board, I would have liked a Spirit race, but none were available). White Ladies blocked two of the four mountains, and would have blocked three had I not avoided the Skeletons. The eastern mountain was open, and the southern mountain was taken by the in-decline Skeletons, so I used the dragon to block the eastern mountain, and grabbed as much of the area below my line-o-Ladies as I could.
When it was the AI's turn to play its Merchant Giants, three of the mountains were immune and the fourth contained its own Skeletons. So it started in the northwest corner, where there was only one region surrounded by immune White Ladies. The smart thing would have been to start in the south, whether cannibalizing its own Skeletons around the mountain (Merchant would have more than offset the loss), or starting away from the mountain and taking out some of my Humans until it could grab one of the mountains. Even starting in the northeast, there at least would have been two open regions, so why the AI placed in that one blocked corner is beyond me.
Over the next several rounds, I wiped out the Skeletons and spread my Humans as far as they could go across ten regions (this took a few turns longer than expected, as the reinforcement die always came up empty for me).
Eventually I was scoring 18 points per round between my six White Ladies and my ten Humans (with two farmlands). The AI never abandoned that one region in the corner, and simply redeployed all eight Giants to the same place every turn.
After all the Skeletons were wiped out, the Merchant Giants were only scoring 3 points per round. And so the game ended 129-39, a 90-point spread.
And on a final note:
Seriously, guys, time for an update to this game! We need Retina graphics, Be Not Afraid, Tales and Legends, 3- and 4-player games, and online multiplayer. I play this game almost every day, and there hasn't been an update in ages.

Small World for iPad call for update!
|

Sadly this forum has all but died along with the Small World app. I'm simply trying to get somebody's attention up at Days of Wonder who will actually do something about the app. You would think that a company that makes $20 million in revenue could afford even a small, temporary development team to update the Small World app.
This game is too great to go to waste! If anybody else feels the same way, please send Days of Wonder an email about it!
Anyway, here's a copy of my email to Days of Wonder and their response:
> *Problem Description*
My problem with Small World for iPad is that it's been left to rot in the App
Store graveyard of abandoned apps. It's been more than 2 years now without an update.
I played Small World frequently on my iPad until about a 9 months ago; it's now
deleted from my iPad because I got sick of destroying the weak AI on non-retina
display graphics.
I'm willing to hand over stacks of money to you guys for any of the following features:
- Online Multiplayer
- 3 to 5 player Pass n Play.
- More Expansions!!!! (Underground, etc.)
- Retina display
I understand Ticket to Ride is the cash cow, but please just put even one soul on Small
World development, if that's all the personel you can spare. PLEASE DON'T LET THIS
GAME DIE.
I love your games.
-player119303
Dear player119303
Thank you for your request.
We are aware this app needs some refresh.
Our R&D Team is pretty small, that's why we did not have time/capacity to update
this app, while focusing on our other app Ticket to Ride.
Just to make things clear: we did not abandon Small World. We plan to update it but
we cannot announce yet any availability date or features set.
Best Regards,
Gerald G.

iPad Small World Freezes and Crashes

I truly enjoyed Small World for the iPad for about a month before it started slowing down, then freezing and crashing. I can no longer complete a game without this happening. The speed it plays dropped dramatically yesterday and has continued. I managed to get through a game or two before it would start freezing, then crashing around turn 7 of any game that I started.
I have tried deleting the app and reloading, but the same problems occur. This is the only app that has this happening. Anyone out there had a similar problem and found how to fix it?

Encouraging info for the SW2 project?

I know it's been posted that there's a smaller market for Android/PC devices, and that the upcoming relaunch of the Small World 2 Kickstarter will hopefully gauge just how much support is out there.
As it happens, there's a similar Kickstarter project that's about to end for another board game, Ascension Online. It's a board/card game, that has an iOS app... and the goal of the project is to develop it for Android and PC. Like the SW2 project, it has a mixture of digital and physical rewards. I can't comment on the comparative success or appeal of Ascension vs. Small World, but the Ascension Online project has a similar funding goal that's been reached.
Hopefully, this is a sign of good news to come for Small World. There is demand out there!

Incomplete German rules

I was wondering how you could be caught in the act searching someone's cell when only one (!) person is allowed in the cells.
The English rule is clear - but this is missing in the German rule altogether: Only the owner of the cell is allowed in in order to catch someone else in the act!
Quite bad rule omission, didn't check for other mistakes yet. Actually this posting should be on the German discussion forum, but nobody seems to go there - so maybe some Germans read it here, unless they know already.
... and got only one blank card, sniff, so this is the second Mystery of the Abbey: Who stole my second blank card?

Some extra scriptorium cards

The spirit of Brother Adelmo (star)
Use this card when you are in your cellula.
"The spirit of Brother Adelmo visits you in prayer. He tells you the name of his closest friend in the abbey. This person is certainly innocent."
Roll one of the monk dice and pick a random card of that player. If the dice points you out or a player with no cards, roll again.
In hiding
"Terrified for another murder, a monk goes in hiding."
Hide a monk from your hand in a room by noting the room on a paper and putting his card and the paper aside. If a player enters that room, you have to show the card to that player. From that point on, all players know where the monk is hiding, but the monk remains there for the rest of the game.
A small lie (star)
This card allows you one lie when asked a question. You may use this card only once, and reveal it only at the end of the game, or when another card forces you to reveal it.
The eye of God
Pick an empty room. Each player that ends his turn in that room must show all his suspect cards to you. This effect remains active untill the next mass. (Mark that room with a coin).

The scheduled slot is from 9pm-12am on Friday.
You'd need to know the game and enjoy being around teens. Please e-mail Kaarin at acd@boardgamers.org if you would be willing to help.

First Play Good Fun

My daughter got MoA for a Christmas present. We have one case in the books and we had a good time. We will, like everyone else, need to work on our questioning. We tended to ask very revealing questions, but as a start it wasn't bad. We seemed to all figure out who it was at about the same time so we had a mad rush to make an accusation. My daughter got there first with the use of a Crypta card. She had made one wrong revelation and I had made two correct revelations so I won by one point.
The cards make it fun. We will probably go with the variant of moving up to three spaces per turn next time. We really enjoyed the game.
Thank you,
Scott

Morning Bells event card - fun singing Brother John

If you want to have more fun when an event card MORNING BELLS is played, try to play it like this:
everyone must roll a dice in a row,
depending on the colour on the dice
player may choose a languge in which he will sing Brother John song
try it in African
here you can find two sheets containing the song in 34 languages
every language has its own colour:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/526122
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/526123
For example, if the colour on the dice is black, player can choose - Argentinean, Dutch, Indonesian, Swedish or Spanish version.
If another player rolls black as well, he must choose a different language than the first player.
Have fun!!!

Playing Mystery of the Abbey with only two players

Hi everyone! I've been playing MotA with my wife, only two players and I must say that indeed there is mystery in the game. We know that the more players in the game the funnier it gets, but when we are alone, we play it this way. We close the library and we discard some scriptorium cards that are useless for only two players. We must say we have had such fun!!
I'm sending this for those board game addicts who don't buy this game for the fact of just being two players.

The Abbey of Saint-Pierre has been extremely quiet these past few years as the Abbot sent all the monks away for a very long pilgrimage. But they're on their way back, and once again they'll be tasked with solving the mystery... Who Killed Brother Adelmo?
Mystery of the Abbey is a whodunit game of deduction and intuition, set in a medieval abbey. Originally released in 2003 as Days of Wonder's first big box board game, it has won numerous awards and tens of thousands of fans. Out of print for several years, Mystery of the Abbey will soon be available again. Expect to see it in stores in the US and Europe by late August. Learn more on the Mystery of the Abbey web page.

Replacement Mystery of the Abbey Mass Cards
|
Thu, 20 December 2012 17:57

|
 |
In the 2012 reprint of Mystery of the Abbey, there are errors in the English language edition where the incorrect number of cards to pass at Mass is given.
Each card incorrectly states you should pass 2 cards, whereas the number of cards to pass changes depending on the Mass. For the first Mass card (MATINS), you pass 1 card; for the second Mass card (LAUDS) you pass 2; then (PRIME) 3 cards; (TERCE) 4; (SEXT) 5; and 6 cards for the last 3 (NONE, VESPERS and COMPLINE).
We have reprinted new Mass cards, so if you have incorrect cards (i.e., each card says "pass 2 cards"), we'd like to send you the corrected versions for free.
To qualify for the free replacement deck program you must have a registered copy of Mystery of the Abbey and be logged into your Days of Wonder account.
To get your free replacement Mystery of the Abbey Mass cards, click Mystery Mass Card Replacement Deck to order yours.

New "front" field in M44 Editor

Hello everyone:
You might notice a new field in the Memoir '44 Scenario Editor, called "front".
We are grouping the various scenarios by fronts: Western Front, Eastern Front, Pacific Theater and African Front.
This will be used in the coming Air Pack. This will allow an easy selection of a scenario on a per-front basis.
In time, an additional filter and sort will be available in the list view.
For example, say you build an Ardennes winter scenario: you would probably use some hexes from the Eastern Front expansion, but this is still a Western Front scenario.

FAQ regarding Operation Overlord and the Battle Maps
|
Thu, 04 September 2008 19:55

|
 |
Why this FAQ? And why only now?
When we introduced Operation Overlord and the Hedgerow Hell & Cadets of Saumur Battle Map, a week before Gencon in mid-August, we had hoped to simultaneously post a news entry detailing our upcoming plans for Memoir '44 Organized Play tournaments. Unfortunately, between vacation schedules for some of us and a week being bed-ridden for myself, we were not able to get this post done before the show.
As a result, questions were raised that we never had a chance to address properly until now.
While a full-fledged description of our Memoir '44 Tournament program is yet to come - and will hopefully be up on our web site by around the time these expansions ship to retailers, in mid-October - in the interim this FAQ will answer the most commonly asked questions surrounding these releases.
Why did you spend time designing and producing these 2 expansions (Operation Overlord and Hedgerow Hell)?
We have been wanting to run an Organized Play program for Memoir '44 - and, more specifically, a series of game demonstrations and tournaments that can be held in public venues such as game stores and game clubs - for a long time.
For a variety of reasons - lack of time, lack of efficient, scaleable distribution mechanism, etc... we haven't been able to do so until recently. With the announcement in July of our exclusive distribution agreement through Alliance in the US, we have now just reached the stage where we can launch such a program effectively.
Historically, our most successful public exhibitions of Memoir '44 have always been the highly-enjoyable, high-visibility Overlord games we have been running on expensive, custom-made oversized maps at conventions such as Gencon and Kublacon. So much so that players would frequently ask us to sell them the one copy we had at the end of each game, and that the few rolled-up maps we did make over the years were constantly being shuffled from one game store to the next on an ad-hoc basis.
Needless to say, while great fun, this method - playing games on multi-hundred dollar custom maps - was neither practical nor cost effective. So, when we finally found a printer capable of consistently producing these large-scale maps (Overlord Battle Maps, like Breakthrough Battle Maps, are significantly larger than a standard Memoir '44 board map) reliably, in quantity and to our specs, we jumped at the opportunity.
The idea is NOT, and never was, to turn these Battle Maps (and the companion Operation Overlord expansion) into mainstream consumer items. Rather the goal was and remains primarily to provide us with a vehicle which game stores and game clubs can easily use in a crowded, noisy environment to quickly set-up a game, demo or tourney.
Now, we also know from experience, that while 500 - 1,000 copies would be all we would likely need to accommodate our Organized Play needs (i.e. game stores and game clubs), if these were the only copies made, with none available at retail or through our web store, some customers will invariably end up disappointed at not being able to own these maps themselves.
Furthermore, we noticed that while hardcore fans of the game enjoy setting up or even designing or tweaking the various scenarios (both official and fan-based) that are available on our web site, a greater number of players were looking for a more turn-key set-up and play experience, where they could go to a store on a Friday afternoon and pick up a supplement that would be ready to play that same night.
What were you guys thinking announcing this at that time, with no other info regarding the Organized Play program or some other expansions?
So, with GenCon around the corner (where we knew we would need these maps to demo and play), and a few copies air-shipped out to us in time for the show, we made the decision to announce these expansions. We did not realize that to many who could not attend, this announcement would raise more questions than answers, which we would not be able to answer right away, and for this we apologize.
We also obviously underestimated the fact that, without this FAQ or our Organized Play program info, people would potentially think of these two expansions - always minor in our opinion from a consumer perspective - as our MAJOR Memoir '44 release for the year. This created an understandable sense of disappointment from fans of the game
We knew this wasn't the case, of course, since the newly introduced Mediterranean Theater was in production at the same time, but that announcement was one we wanted to hold back until early September because it was the expansion that we knew would be of interest to most Memoir '44 customers, including those in Europe where a majority of resellers and consumers take some time off during July and August.
So yes, in hindsight, holding back on this announcement for a few weeks and foregoing a GenCon intro might have been preferable for the online fan base. But then again, for the majority of customers it would have made no difference, and for those who got a chance to play and/or purchase a copy at GenCon, it would have been a shame.
Why this focus on the Overlord format?
The choice of focusing on Overlord as the format of choice for Organized Play is because:
- it gives the whole game a much greater attention-catching visual impact, even in crowded or high-traffic venues
- it accommodates more than 1 player to a side (thereby welcoming more newcomers faster and increasing the potential network effect)
- it is actually easier and faster for first-time players to learn the game that way (if you are a Commander in the field, all you need to grasp is how to move your units and roll and read dice, initially)
- it will encourage team building (you will need a team of 4 players to compete in future tourneys, which should in turn encourage people to develop their User Page, etc...)
- and, last but not least, it is a terrifically fun way to play!
Why pre-printed Battle maps rather than the standard board set-up?
We went with pre-printed maps because:
- they are much easier to set-up in the type of venue we target for Organized play (no hexes moving around or falling off)
- they are relatively self-contained (all you need is a Battle Map, the Operation Overlord and some figures), with all the relevant information already pre-set on the table; instead, setting up Hedgerow Hell the traditional way would require 3 Terrain Packs, for instance
- they are much faster to set-up (those who have actually seen Hedgerow Hell or the Cadets of Saumur will understand
); sorting regular card decks after a game isn't much fun either, and having the units symbols pre-positioned on the map is a great boon to, as any who set this up will attest
Does this mean that DoW is stepping away from its more traditional hex-based scenario set-up?
Not at all! We will continue to use hexes as the basis for more traditional M44 expansions (the newly introduced Mediterranean Theater for example). But what the paper Battle Maps accomplish is provide us with the flexibility to, experiment with a new format that we believe is better suited for a certain segment of the market (occasional players looking for ready-to-play scenarios) and type of venue (game stores and other public venues).
So how frequently will we see new pre-printed Battle maps in the future?
While this will obviously depend on the commercial success, or lack thereof, of the current ones, we would expect to release a new Overlord and/or Breakthrough Battle map about 3-4 times a year, usually around major conventions or company events.
Not all maps will contain new figures, not all maps will contain 2 pre-printed scenarios (a few might contain a blank map on one side, like Breakthrough to Gembloux but for different seasons or board set-ups for instance), a few others might push the boundaries of what can be done with a pre-printed map, etc...
I haven't even seen these maps yet, but I really hate the concept. What should I do?
While the online community is very active - and vocal, sometimes - it is not always an accurate reflection of our player community's wants and needs as a whole. So while you may disagree with some of our product design decisions - and we by all means encourage all our customers to pick and purchase just what is right for them, rather than buying something just for the sake of it - you will have to trust us somewhat that this idea is not as harebrained or ill-conceived as you think, .
What we do, even if we don't always answer or react, is read posts. Of course, like most humans, we react better to constructive, well thought-out and written criticisms, rather than to invectives or worse !
If you give these a chance, and take the time to actually play them once they arrive (which doesn't necessarily mean buying them - instead just go and set-up an event in your local store once our Organized Play pages are up later this year), we will listen to your suggestions for making these even better. This does not mean we will answer every post or desiderata, but compelling, eloquent arguments go a long way (though they still have to pass our own tests for commercial viability of course!).
So, once you've seen and played with these maps (Hedgerow Hell or Gembloux for that matter), please feel free to give us your thoughts. We will do our best to incorporate those suggestions that make the most sense, game-wise.
These Battle maps and Operation Overlord are a distraction, done at the expense of what I want (insert your favorite yet unpublished Memoir '44 expansion here)!
Quite the contrary, actually! You should root for these Battle Maps to succeed, because Organized Play is one of the keys to keep growing the installed base and demand for the base game of Memoir '44.
So if you want to help, volunteer when we announce the Organized Play program, and disseminate the word
The price for these Battle Maps is wrong / too high!
We will be the first to admit that the price for Hedgerow Hell & the Cadets of Saumur is higher that we would have liked it to be. This is due to a combination of factors, most of which we have no control over (dramatic increases in fuel, plastic and labor costs in China). We are working on a number of ways to bring this more in line with our initial targets (10-12 euros, $12-15 depending on the map set-up, miniatures, etc...) down the road.
Like most printed products, cost varies greatly depending on print run size, so if this format is the success we hope, pricing may improve somewhat.
Also remember that this is not designed for single or 2 player mode. Instead the Overlord mode truly shines when used with the full complement of 8 players. So getting 3 (or more) of your friends to chip in, or buying one in turn each time, should go a long way toward making these maps more affordable.
Ok now I understand about the maps, but why did you also produce this Operation Overlord expansion? Do I need it?
Operation Overlord was designed to be used - and purchased - in conjunction with Battle Maps. While there is only one Overlord Battle Map available right now, the range of Battle Maps than can be played with it (and thus the value of the expansion) will increase as we release more maps in the future.
And for what it's worth, unless you don't know anyone who owns another copy of the base M44 game, you don't "need" this expansion per se. It just makes it useful (and much easier for beginners than using the standard deck and rules you can download from our web site). This is the reason why this expansion was designed in the first place, NOT for hardcore veterans of the game - though those who will look into it might still appreciate the revised decks and additional eight dice.
Why didn't you print Overlord scenarios in the Operation Overlord?
Because the Overlord scenarios published to date require not only two copies of the base game but also often two copies of several of the expansions, thereby greatly reducing the number of people who could play them without a pre-printed map.
If we had put these scenarios in, people would have complained they couldn't play most of them.
Why didn't you put a blank paper map in Operation Overlord?
Because it would have changed the format of the expansion, thereby dramatically increase its cost.
If we see that there is sufficient demand (not just from the online community, but also from the market in general) to release blank Overlord maps (especially the Winter and Desert ones, since most people don't have 2 copies of that expansion), we will consider releasing some "blank" battle maps with a pre-printed scenario just on one side in the future.
All I care about is the new Truck figures, not the map (because I already have 2 games, and multiple copies of the expansions, because I hate paper maps with a vengeance, etc..). What should I do?
While some maps will indeed include some miniatures (like the Trucks in Hedgerow Hell), not all of them will. But these are great prizes for newcomers to the game (remember, we are trying to grow the base too) and veterans alike, in tournaments.
In any case in all instances, we will make the rules (i.e. Summary card) for these units available in our online M44 Summary Card compendium, like we do for any other unit or card in the game, once the Battle Map actually ships. And when we print actual physical copies of these Summary cards (in compilations, available from our web site at a marginal cost, at regular intervals) these new Summary cards will be included in the mix.
So if all you care about is these minis (meaning you have every thing else and multiple copies of the game and its expansions), by far your best investment would be to buy a couple of high quality metal minis in the same scale, such as those from Perrin Miniatures.
Note that we will also make the scenarios available on the web site; the only reason we haven't done so with Gembloux so far, is that the version of the scenario editor that will support the Breakthrough mode isn't ready for commercial release yet.
I live in Romania/any other country not supported by DoW's European web store. Why can't I order direct from you guys?
Unfortunately, for reasons outside of our control, the postal system we use in France and Germany to do our shipping does not allow us to ship to these countries in a reliable and cost-effective manner. You would be better off buying from an online store in another country or, depending on where you live, even from our US web store.

Air Pack - Fragen zu den Air Rules

Hallo leute
MfG
