Welcome to the Competitive Play forum Thu, 01 December 2005 18:05
Welcome,

This forum was created to provide competitive players of all our online games (Ticket to Ride and Gang of Four in particular) with a venue to discuss their passion. From now on, please make all posts related to tournaments, ranking, competitive play, ... here, rather than in their respective game forum.

We will tolerate light banter and some amount of taunting between various teams/players. However, the guidelines stated in this thread http://www.daysofwonder.com/index.php?t=msg&th=5555 regarding language and behavior remain in effect.

Happy tourneys, and good luck.

The (losing) Nation's Cup team at DoW Wink

Glitch? Sun, 21 May 2006 12:55
There seems to be a glitch at least on my computers, where if the opponent choses their tickets faster than you and then [does something, I'm not sure what] the bot takes over, but the game never starts and just sits there.

I've tried to exit out and resume the game and various other things, but in the end the game gets aborted with no one winning or losing.

So what is happening is opponents are getting bad tickets and exiting out with no consequences.

Am I missing something? Is this a known glitch?

The search is over. Only one here can tie you in knots. Only one can make you wonder how you can't make it from Helena to LA. Only one says No Miami for U. Only one can make you say oh no, not Sea-NY and Van-Mon. Therefore, there can be only one avatar for the one. No Dudley Dooright's here.

I love going off on tangents myself. Why I remember one time ... (no focus). In the course of threads we often start on one topic and end up in another, just like that time in the restaurant when Wendy and I ... (no focus).

The TTR Ratings distribution thread is a long running single issue thread that actually has little to do with attacking erps, thekid, skm or anyone else. It is not a thread on ethics, or elitism. It's main topic is the ratings distribution in TTR. One, two, three side issues, jibes, bon mots, no problem. It is not that longer tangents are bad in other threads, but in this, and certain other threads, we should try to get back to the issue more quickly or move it to another thread, perhaps this one.

There, I got through what I wanted to say.

How about Nordic Countries Championship tournament??? Sat, 26 August 2006 17:43
How is it possible, that we don't have Nordic Countries Championship tournament yet? We Finns are so keen on competing against our dear neighbors in every possible sports imaginable, so why not in T2R?

Are there any other Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or Icelandic players interested in this kind of activity? Or are our neighbours too afraid of the Notorious Finnish T2R Connection? Wink

Also let me know, if someone would be eager to organise the event.

I'm not sure if there has been this kind of tournament already, but at least I haven't heard about it.

Many people like to watch the NC games, however, it is not always easy to know which games are for NC and which are not.

It would be nice if all competitors put "NC" somewhere in the name when creating games for NC competition. This would allow those who wished to watch an easy way of identifying which games counted for the contests and which ones did not.

Hi

After an interesting night from saturday to sunday in the lobby i decided to test a theory of thekid concerning youki, him typing "." all the time...

Here is the proof, a picture of youki. This is a still from a secret video, every minute the bot turns 90 degrees and press the "." key.

http://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~erps/zugumzugbilder/Robot-Arm.jpg

Maybe it is not youki himself but his computer pet which presses the key all the time meanwhile he lying drunk and stoned around laughing silently at his opponent. Evil or Very Mad

Doesn't matter, next week my secret computer virus will deactivate his robot and the real bot will play for him (as usual very good, at least better than he Twisted Evil )

Hi

Some players like tprail and me discovered yesterday that there are some words of wisdom regarding TTR, maybe you can find more Smile

A win is a win is a win.

Whoever lays down the last move, ends the game.

6-tracks are more worth than 2-tracks.

Not the gap of winning is important, only the win.

TTR Nations Cup is a tournament with a lot of teams, a lot of players, great games and the dutch are always losing.

Starting the game is not as important as playing good (Corflu).

I have been updating this in the forum at shamogi's fine site (http://www.shamogi.de/nc06/), but thought I'd add the finished product here as well for anyone who missed it. It has still not been added to the official results, but hojita beat myas 3:0, so all of the clashes have been decided, though there are some individual matches still left to be played.

Here is a digraph of the results. Arrow heads pointing at you are good. Wink

NC Anti Bot Rules Thu, 09 November 2006 00:44
Hi

We need to adjust the BOT rules for NC a little! Now after 5 minutes of not doing legal moves the bot replaces a player. I still think that 5 minutes are more than enough to do a move but what happens if one player is botted and the other player is waiting as stated in the rules. He CANNOT wait longer than 5 minutes, after this he is botted? leaves the game? the game is cancelled? What happens exactly in this moment?

So the other player has to wait 4 minutes and leave the game IF the game is otherwise not counted. Nothing to do if the game is showing up in Continue game, just waiting your 5 minutes and getting botted (but what if in the same moment the opponent rejoins???)

bye, erps

Has anyone tested the 5 minutes rule for BOTH players? What happens exactly?

Now with all the new ratings, seems like it would be nice to have a page that had a better display of the tops in each category.

I would try, but I have no idea how to grab the info off the DoW site.

I figured top 10 (or 20) would suffice in each of the 9 categories.
Maybe a 3x3 grid (could see the first 3 then have to scroll down for the other 6)

Overall -- 2 player -- Multi
Usa -- Europe -- Swiss
1910 -- Mega -- BigCities

Composite Rankings 11/26/2006 Mon, 27 November 2006 11:03
I was curious who was playing different maps and such and decided to post initial results.

I want to do 2 different rankings.

First one is Composite Ranking which is merely your 2-Player Rank + your Multi-Player Rank (not rating, but rank since its easier to get a higher 2 player rating). Lower number is obviously better. Doesn't matter what maps you play on, but you need to play both 2 player and multi player to be on the list.

Second ranking is Map Ranking. This is a mix of all the maps (USA, Europe, Swiss, 1910, 1910 Mega, 1910 Big Cities). Not enough people have played the new 1910 maps, so this Rank is rather meaningless right now, and I didn't bother to calculate anything yet.

I only looked at the top 150 players in each of the categories. Turns out only 16 people rank in the top 150 on both the 2 Player and MultiPlayer rankings.

Composite Ranking 11/26/2006
(2Player Rank + MultiPlayer Rank)

1 (24) DrakeStorm
2 (28) Kotay
3 (52) Angel6
4 (55) dea1
5 (84) tchanet
6 (94) Wernerus
7 (101) Davidb9
8 (115) Hecki
9 (124) mesaieux
10 (137) Peter de Zeeuw
11 (137) psteinx
12 (157) Baron von Spudbeater
13 (162) spudamon
14 (175) maalm
15 (196) taurus1
16 (216) SchwyzerToni

I didn't expect to see myself on the top, but I guess alot of people still care about their obsolete overall ranking and don't play multiplayer.

In my last 20 games, I have 6 wins, 9 losses (sad I know...), and 5 TIES, fully one-fourth of my games. I wonder if any of the stats-meisters can come up with the odds for that??

(Maybe my 2-player and USA scores will catch up with my overall if my overall keeps falling!)

I guess I should have included #16 or whatever it was from Erps suggestions on not outing 2nd accounts!!!

ok just kidding. I'm ok with it all and believe it or not kbhanson and I have made peace.

I have been many people in many lives. Another one I've been thinking of telling to all this last week but I think now I'll give things a week or two for everyone to calm down before I explain that one.

Ask Elric what it means to be the Eternal Champion. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.

Organizing your buddy list CORRECTION Mon, 08 January 2007 15:59
Buddy lists show up under your account in the order your "buddy's" registered on DoW.

In the game screen the order is reverse of when you added them. So if you want to have certain names show up in the first six when you click on buddy list, you have to remove those names from your current list then add them again. Then they will show in the first six slots.

It seems that the reverse order thing only works when you add buddies from your actual buddy list page under My Account. When you add buddies from the play game screen I have no clue how they are organized. Seems pretty random to me (I could not make sense of any pattern in the short time I explored it).

If DoW has any wisdom to add to this as to organization of buddy lists that would be wonderful to see. What do you know Brice?

In my not so humble opinion Fri, 16 March 2007 09:06
First grats kid for reaching the highest anyone ever has.

Now, that said.....

Instead of carping about how someone got there, who they played, who they avoided, how many guests, how many unrated games once they played etc. let me propose something simple.

I personally will accept no ONE player as "the best" I don't care if they get to top 20 in all rankings (if I did then Drake is the best) or the top score ever (thekid) or top in any individual map and for how long.

Got it?

I don't care.

And why don't I care? Because the ratings can be manipulated for one. (not saying anyone in particular has done so, so ya'll settle down right now). And for a multitude of other reasons.

You want to be considered the best on a particular map in my book? And by the way since I am a freakin genius pretty much what I say here is just how it is in life. Get used to it folks. If you hadn't figured that out by now then you need to go somewhere else.

This is how you do it.

You take the 5 (or 4 other) best players who have had the highest score on that particular map WHO ARE STILL AROUND AND PLAYING, and you have a mini tournament. Best of 11 round robin. Each player plays each other player.

Yeah, so unfortunatley no Pilke to play. In my awesomely enlightened opinion I think thekid would come out the clear winner on the Swiss map in that situation. Once these games have been played in this manner and the wins are in stone I can make that announcement official.

I think WhiteTrain would be the best in the US 2 player map. Again, can't be official till I see these players beat the OTHER ELITE TOPS. Get it? Not guests, not newbs, not 1500's not anyone else.

Not even the current top 5. The 4 or 5 who have been best at that map who are still playing. You do that and you can have my utmost respect for the map.

If everyone wins 2 out of their 4 matches, or even if someone wins 3 but is only a 55% winner compared to someone who won 2 and lost 2 in this manner

6-1
6-1
5-6
5-6

then that means no clear winner.

As far as the BEST player ever? Who can say with all the maps and variations. The fact that thekid has reached number 1 or 2 in many of them does indeed say alot. But we can't say best player ever when so many who may challenge that title have gone to parts unknown.

Tournaments should be this way anyway. 11 games to even out the luck factor and the going first factor. There were a few times in the NC that my oponnent went first every game in the series. Heck I'd really like to see best of 15 but I doubt anyone will do it.

So lets sum it up.

You want to be known as the best in any map or style?

THEN BEAT THE BEST. If you are the best it will be no problem. I doubt kid will have any problem on swiss and maybe Drake will have no problem on whatever map his little cheat program works best on Twisted Evil

I don't want to see any crap about statistics or who plays who on this thread. It's simple. Beat the best to be called the best. Don't clutter up the thread with pet theories or crap.

I hearby Christen a new tournament! Elite players only! (so sorry Lea Very Happy) (not that she isn't elite but that she hates elitism)

BEAT THE BEST TO BECOME THE BEST - Tourney

Games are open. If someone decides to tank their rating before the tourney they are out. Lets put an end to the whining once and for all.

Baron

Every so often I look around at the 9 rankings and like to see what's happening. I always wonder when someone makes a big leap up the rankings and take a peek. This one I think deserves some more eyes. In Switzerland superamsel has made a big move, particularly against Ritter Armin. Now Ritter has a good record and ranking in swiss and has beaten a bunch of quality opponents, but has been blown out by epic proportions in going 0 - 17 against superamsel. In one 3 player he only scored 10 points, and for those who don't know 3 player is higher scoring than 2 player. The 2 players were blowouts but he scored some points. Take a look, looks suspicious to me.

calif or caIif? Sat, 16 June 2007 01:05
FYI, A few nights ago I played against someone - player ID 285466, blocked him/her/it, he/she/it got upset, and changed his/her/its user name to caIif - capital i in the middle instead of l. It's hard to distinguish in the lobby when glancing merely at the names, so just thought if you see/hear me acting like an arse, it might not be me! Thanks everyone.

my old second account Fri, 29 June 2007 11:43
hi all,

I stopped using my second account a while ago, and since it still has a bit of time left, I have handed it off to a friend. Nothing special, but if you run into zeno_alt

http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/usrinfo/?id=221893

it is not me. It is a clueless n00b, starting out with a 1607 rating. Don't be too greedy taking his points, and please try to welcome him to our community. He is bright, and loves board games, and could become a good player eventually. I would appreciate it if you could give him some pointers, in return for the easy points, and note that I will not play him rated for quite a while.

Thanks,

Zeno

NC 2007 : United States Teams? Tue, 10 July 2007 16:37
Okay,

In discussion with some others one night (U.S. time zones), we were trying to get a feel for who from US is playing in Nation's Cup. We thought some clearinghouse thread might be needed for people searching for a US team. So either put a note here if you have a team together, or if you have part of a team together.

If you are an individual, then send me a pm and every few days I will put a list of candidates on this thread.

This way we will not get a thread that has too many notations on it.

Onyx.

Dear Members of the Competitive forum:

It seems that at least once every few months, members here need to be reminded what the rules of conduct are on the Days of Wonder forums. To refresh your memory here are the pertinent parts of our Terms of Use document...

"You shall not upload to, distribute through, or otherwise publish through an Days of Wonder website any content which is libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, threatening, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, abusive, illegal, or otherwise objectionable that would constitute or encourage a criminal offense, violate the rights of any party, or that would otherwise give rise to liability or violate any law."

Players who continue to flaunt the rules by name-calling and making personal attacks on others will have their accounts and playing privileges suspended.
