BATTLE OF ABBEVILLE Tue, 31 December 2013 01:45
Recently we had the opportunity to play the Battle of Abbeville scenario. We had a good time and the scenario was fun, but during the game a little issue emerged: it turned out that the air power cards played a central role in the development of the game. Because of the blitz rule, the Germans can bomb also with a Recon 1. Moreover we used the breakthrough deck from Winter Wars expansion, in which both players roll two dice for the air power attack. Our impression is that the heavy involvement of bombers ruined a little bit the historical flavour of the scenario. Indeed in [1] it is stated that during that battle the French army did not get any ground support from the Allied air forces. At the same time, in [2] at p. 116 it is reported that the bombers of the Luftwaffe received a terrible blow by a squadron of Hurricanes just before the battle, so that they decided not to fly over the area for several days. From these sources I tend to conclude that the air support was essentially unavailable/irrelevant for the entire battle of Abbeville.

If I can dare to suggest a couple of possible modifications, I would say that:

- replacing the Blitz rule with a rule that forces the French heavy tanks to move two hexes (no need to reduce the speed of light tanks);

- reducing the number of Allied cards to 5 to simulate the general lack of coordination on the Allies side

would probably improve the adherence of the gaming experience to historical reality. What's your opinion?

G.
