Battle of the Bulge scenario Tue, 25 November 2008 00:28
Hi,

I'm relatively new to this game and new to the messageboard.
I'm planning to play a game of Memoir with my friends with Christmas. To do this in style I thought I would play a scenario from the Battle of the Bulge. But what is the best scenario? Do some of you guys have hints which one to play? Or maybe we can set up a contest who can design the best Battle of the Bulge scenario?

A have the winter board and the Eastern front expansion so I can play in the snow (because that is a must with Christmas, of course)... Very Happy

Hope you guys are in for it...

As I recall, there are 6 (including the overlord) official scenarios for the battle of the bulge. There are plenty of other unofficial ones too that you might want to check out for some variety.

My favorite out of those six would be "Relief of Peiper." I'm not sure why, but it is always fun! (And don't constrain yourself to just one!)

Do you have the air pack too? Unfourtunately, the EF doesn't come with winter hills, but the air pack does, to help with the visual effect.

Any other opinions?

Try my version, it has heavy tank units (Tiger or Panther), the board is played sideways for more depth, and the action takes place around Bastogne, St Vith, and Malmedy. The scenario also makes use of the German paratroopers under operation Grief, whose job it was to cut communications lines, and create havoc for our forces. You can get it from the scenarios from the front, or my user page.

My experience has been the following:

Saint-Vith is a good balanced game (if you are looking for balance).

Relief of Pieper is fun but a little skewed towards the Axis side. I suppose it is more fun trying to find the right strategy for Allies to win. The last three times I played, Axis won, but it is fun blowing bridges as the Allies (at the expense of a command card though). If you play two games, switching sides and tally up the score that way, you can ensure balance.

As I recall Twin Villages is also pretty balanced.

There is also the xmas 07 scenario Parker's crossroads, so Ardennes official scenarios are seven.

Maybe exceping Parker's Crossroads they are all outstanding scenariosm and I've sone an Ardennes campaign last year.

The winner was the side with the most (medals + scenarios won)

I read through your scenario. And couple of questions came up.

1. It says that "The goal of the 6th army is to capture both cities and the bridge across the Meuse River, and take 4 more medals. " That sums up together 7 medals. It also allows "The allied engineer unit may attempt to blow up the Meuse River bridge before the Germans reach it. " If this happens, does German side lose automatically since they no longer can capture the bridge?

2. "The Allies have to hold the cities of Bastogne and Malmedy, keep the Germans from crossing the bridge at the Meuse River, and get 5 more medals." If German side occupies either of cities or have crossed Meuse River, can allied side win anymore?

1. Yes, if the engineers destroy the bridge across the Meuse River, the axis can no longer win, since they need to get to Antwerp to establish a seaport.

2. The Allies can still win if the Axis occupy the cities, but have not crossed the Meuse bridge. If the Axis hold their cities and cross the bridge with the required number of medals, they win.

Thanks, I changed the medal count, (previous edit I guess I forgot to change it at the top)

I've played this as Axis and lost because the Allies got enough of my units, and took back one of the cities that I had taken, and I had not crossed the Meuse River Bridge yet (I didn't have control of both cities yet).

And I've won as Axis because of my paratroopers, and enough units took the cities I needed to take, and got an infantry figure across the bridge. I added the British armor unit later, after I read somewhere that they were waiting for the Germans to cross the bridge.

But a friend of mine won as Axis after I added the armor unit across the bridge, because he got good rolls and cards, and I got stinky cards and rolls.

But this is fun to play because you play with the board sideways!
