The Contest of the Fourteen - SMALL WORLD Thu, 22 January 2009 21:47
I guess some people are waiting until they see all 14 of the races for this new game, and that makes a lot of sense. Who knows, maybe the next race that is revealed will become my new favorite! Rolling Eyes

But as of now, let's look at our options and begin the fun process of debate, coercion, bribery, and analysis! Very Happy

Given our choices so far, there are some clear leaders for me. I realize there will be different taste and ideas, and it's our job to find the choices that will appeal to the most people...

We have a lot of choices already (11 as of Thursday, Jan 22) and when we are thinking about which three too choose, a few factors need to be considered.

1) What is the theme of the game? Based on the pictures and the words that come with them, I would guess that this game kind of toung-in-cheek and has a lot of comedy. If that's the case, a top choice might be the race that makes one laugh the most (maybe the Elves, the Tritons with their nipple guards, the Wizards with their book for dummies and the Giants with the man on their shoe!)

2) Which picture (artwork) do you like the best? If you base your choice based only on the picture they give us, you might choose the Sorcerers, the Ghouls, or the Orcs.

3) If this is a game of survival-of-the-fittest, you might choose the race that looks the most likely to survive or dominate the others. You might choose the Amazons, Orcs, Skeletons, or Halflings because they all look ready for any other race.

4) In the end, it's just going to be the one you like the best and if you vote early you'll have to hope other people agree.

For me, it comes down to several factors including art, strength of arms, comedy and general appeal.

My choices are, at this point, 1) Orcs 2) Amazons 3) Tritons Very Happy

Okay. I'm kind of liking 1) Amazons, 2) Ratmen, 3) Giants. But I'm not sure I can identify any criteria as to why at this point. And, of course, these could change.

One of the challenges of the contest is guessing what criteria others will use.

That's what I've been thinking too! It'll be tough to figure out and I'll bet the winner is going to get it with a lucky (if educated) guess!

Thanks for writing. I wasn't sure anyone was going to be willing to put their choices online, so it's good of you to step up, Sean.

Right now my personal top 3 are skeletons, ratmen, and tritons. Itll be tough deciding which to submit though. I think the Amazons are going to be popular. They wont be my favorite but it seems they may do well in this popularity contest.

So, rasmussen81 - now that all 14 races are out, any changes for you? I've narrowed down my top 5, at least: Amazons, Dwarves, Ratmen, Giants, Tritons (in no particular order for now).

I would have to say that I really like:

1) Ratmen - they have a dragon! You can't beat that for coolness and comedy.

2) Amazons - you can't beat the tatooes

3) Trolls - the nose is crazy funny.

Those are my top three. Anyone else?

I really liked some of the new additions to the game. The Ratmen are great. Like "School" said, they control a dragon based on the little bit we know about the game, so that gets them my vote. Although I don't know how high a vote it is yet.

I still really like the Tritons though, so they're in the mix somewhere. The Amazons are also up there. I'll have to keep thinking about it but right now those are my top three.

Anyone remember when the competition starts over at BGG? I can't remember. Maybe I should just look instead of being lazy! Shoot. Very Happy

Well, we can tell who Eric likes the best! He might know something I don't (since he's seen the game and maybe even played it already!). Trolls might have to move up my list... Rolling Eyes We'll see.

So where on BGG do we find the contest-page? Is it just not up yet?

Beer and Axes. Dwarves. I like the Trolls. But the Dwarves have beer and axes. The Trolls have the sweet noses, and the Ratmen the dragon. But...beer. And axes. I'll have a hard time not supporting Dwarves with beer and axes.

I want to know who the big sinister looking helmet dude is before you enter the "preview" of the game! I didn't realize that Sauron was in this game...did he slip over from Middle Earth! Is he the GM or just a cool picture?

Anyone plan to play this game with "It's a Small World" playing in the background the whole time?! Laughing

I imagine it'll be up tomorrow morning some time. I'll be the first item on their news area. Has anyone decided on a strategy yet? Are you going for a guess-early-and-hope-to-get-lucky method? Or maybe the sit back and watch, and hope to be the first to get the right three method? I'm kind of just going by the seat of my pants, at this point. If I look at the competition and have a good feeling, I might take a guess and hope for the best. If I didn't have much for breakfast, I might wait a while. As you can tell, I've put a lot of thought into my strategy! Laughing

Well, I have some more data to enter into my carefully layed strategy. Given current projections, I would say the Sorcerers are screwed! So are the fairy elves. Too bad, maybe they'll turn out to be great characters in the game...but come on, the elf is being pushed off the world by the guy who's brain is all over the place! Looking at the picture there, I would actually have to say the dwarf looks the best. He looks totally relaxed and even has a beer-bubble coming out of his mouth! Very Happy

I woke up at 5:30 am (Pacific Time) to get ready for work anyway and checked the contest...there were already 457 votes for the Amazons!! Crazy.

Here are some links to the contest.

The contest goes until February 18th. In three weeks from now we'll know if the early vote strategy paid of for a lot of people or if it was better to wait and vote. I don't see how the Amazons could loose the lead (being 490 votes ahead of the next race at this point). But the other positions could change around a lot!

I am utterly frustrated. Can anyone explain to me why certain race-images are not shown...why I can't vote for the ones I want...?

EDIT: IT FINALLY WORKED. CAN'T EXPLAIN IT, BUT MY VOTES ARE IN.

Sean - there was a problem with way the graphics were formatted for those races, so that some systems didn't recognize them. BGG updated the graphics, which is why it now worked for you.

Thanks for your patience... Go Skels!

I wonder why not many have voted for tritons yet, I thought they were pretty popular.

I agree, Zasdert. The leaders aren't the ones I thought they might be. Too bad for me, I guess. I thought that the Amazons might be first but I didn't expect the other two to be so far ahead. I guess there's still plenty of time for things to change.

All that would have to happen is for several game stores to vote for an underdog and change the ratings!

Wow, yeah. I guess I'm not surprised that Skeletons are doing well. But Elves? The humor must have drawn so much loyalty! Also, I liked the Tritons (in my top 5), but I'm actually more surprised that Ratmen are not doing better as opposed to the Tritons....

Someone made a good point on BGG, that voting for the top races will probably not get you in the top 10, because many people have already voted that way. Vote for some of the less popular races for a better chance of winning actually, then go out and get support.

There's still a lot of time left on this thing, but I haven't seen a whole lot of change in the voting. It looks like my poor guys aren't going to win.

Yep. I'm 2-for-3 of the leaders (1-Amazons, 2-Dwarves), but I don't think the Ratmen are going to be able to make up the difference to claim the 3rd spot... In any case, it looks like the game will be worth the purchase.
