Kudos on the new scenario editor!!!

I like it.

This is great and has been a long time in the coming.

Now we can design on the go...

And now we can do any map format, from any theater released so far, with any terrain we've seen!! Very Happy

Did anyone else notice how much better the graphics on the maps are compared to the old scenario editor?! Cool

Thanks a lot, DOW, for the new editor. It is really looking great. Brilliant timing, too, as I have just finished my final paper for university and thus have enough free time at my hands to play around with the editor Very Happy

Another Question, though:
Will the scenario editor be regularly updated to include new expansions? Or will there be a new editor version published after the next few expansions (that are hopefully in the making)?

You'll get automatic updates as expansions come out.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I can't get the editor to run.

I've downloaded the msi instalation file to desktop and run through the install wizard, but when I click on the Memoir 'star' icon on the desktop... nothing happens. I've even tried executing the application directly by clicking on the m44sed.exe file, but still nothing happens?
Even followed the instruction as per the PDF file... Start>All Programs>Mem '44 Editor... same outcome... nothing?

I'm running Windows XP - What am I doing wrong?

Sounds obvious, but have you tried opening the actual folder you've installed the editor in with your windows explorer? (For example: C:\boardgames\memoir44\editor) Then click on the "m44sed.exe" (It has an icon with the Memoir star).

There is something seriously wrong with the Scenario Editor.

Since posting my report about the editor not loading I have not been able to turn Windows off... Start>Turn off Computer>Turn Off... does not work.

So I tried... Start>Turn off Computer>Restart... nothing!

I then tried... Start>Log off>Lof off... and the Scenario Editor window opened!!

What is happening?

I downloaded the editor today and it is working fine on my PC for what I have done with it so far. The one thing I did notice is that when you launch the program from the desktop it will take about 30 - 60 seconds for it to come up on the monitor. It is extremely slow at loading.

Kudos indeed.

2 question.

Why editor is not booting up. Its just stays in the processes and UI is not coming up.

Is there some "spyware" in the game ? If I am connected to web and start the editor, can firewall block the startup ?

TommieSL and Blastpop and Alistaja:

I'd like to hear more about your system configurations.

- Are you using a high end PC or an old machine? On some old and slow computers, the application can take some time to start up.

- Do you have very strict security settings in your PC? The application checks for updates once a day, and in a standard way. It also checks if it is already connected to Days of Wonder Online or not. But that's a standard web query, just like what you do with your web browser, so normally Windows should not be bothered by this.

I look forward to your answers.

Thanks in advance,

Yann

I've just tried running the Editor and I'm getting the exact same null response.

The m44sed.exe is 'active' in the Task Manager processes window but the User Interface does not appear on screen.
In this 'state' none of the >Start>Turn Off or Log off commands work.

NO. It is very clean. It is based on the same technology as the Firefox web browser.

We are working on it, but since we cannot reproduce the problem on our machines here, we need more information from you, beyond "it's not working, fix it" Razz

First question for you: what is your system configuration? Are you using XP or Vista?

Second question: do you know how to find the invisible folder named "Application Data" that is located in your home directory? If you do, then we can see together if the Memoir '44 Editor is able to create its preferences files in there.

I look forward to your answers. Thanks in advance,

Yann

Good I have the same setup.
Please follow those steps:
a) find the file prefs.js, it is in the following directory
<Application Data>\Days of Wonder, Inc\Memoir'44 Editor\Profiles\wq4qvl7a.default
(wq4qvl7a can be any 8 character combination)
b) add the following line at the end of the file
user_pref("browser.dom.window.dump.enabled", true);
c) launch "Command Prompt" and "cd" to the following directory:
cd C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor
d) start m44sed with a console in debug mode (type in the Command Prompt window):
m44sed.exe -console
e) a new console window should open and debug messages should start to appear. It should start like this:
appInfo: m44sed@daysofwonder.com
system locale: en-US
language: en
sedInterface: nsISedService
sedClass: @sed.daysofwonder.com/sedservice;1
dirService: [xpconnect wrapped nsIDirectoryServiceProvider]
GREPath: C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor
...
f) copy the message and sent it to me using
select all
copy
in the context menu of the console

Thanks, that would go a long way towards pinpointing where/when/why the launch process fails.

The "beauties" of Windows... Twisted Evil Each system is different. There are times when I think that with the huge stack of hardware and software layers developed by hundreds of different people who don't know each others, it's simply a miracle that it even boots...
Testing on Windows machine is a nightmare. You should visit the test labs of Microsoft at Seattle. I did. These are rooms as large as football playgrounds, with hundreds of different PC configurations stacked in rows and lines. Shocked

Hi there,

Scenario editor looks great! I have a few questions though:

1) Since it's basically a stripped down firefox using XPCOM, XUL & Javascript, why no Linux binary?
2) Will we be able to download (and maybe even edit) the official scenarios and/or the public scenarios in the future?
3) Nice to be able to enter battle reports for the scenarios you don't want to make visible to everyone. But wouldn't it be nice to still use the old DoW codes on every expansion so the editor & the site can check if we are allowed to see those scenarios and then even download & edit them with the new editor?

Thanks!

I'm not sure that this will happen in an official capacity but you can always print something out and change it for your own use. The issue becomes having tons of versions of an official map floating around out there; which wouldn't be a big deal but I don't expect DoW will put effort into helping this happen.

DoW couldn't do this because there's not a code with most of the expansions. There's no way for them to track which expansions we have except for the Base Game, the Pacific Theater, and other ones we order through the DoW site. But I, like a lot of people don't buy most of my items from the stie but from a retailer someplace else.

Hehe, sorry about that, am a programmer myself. It basically means they used the same technology on which the Firefox/Mozilla browsers are based on, so they could easily create a Linux OS application as well (or a version for every other OS on which firefox is able to run)...

Hmm, yeah I can see your point that it would not be such a good idea to have all kinds of different versions of the official scenarios floating around. But it just would have been nice to download them to your harddisk and at least print them from within the program.
With public, non-official scenarios, I don't see a reason why they wouldn't. There are a lot of scenarios out there and it would be nice to be able to make slight modifications or just save them for offline printing.
We can already do that with most of the scenarios in pdf format, so adding a 'download as .m44' (xml based scenario editor format) option would basically provide the same. Now I would have to download them, open the pdf and copy the scenario over by hand into the editor...

Yeah I know, but since these codes don't have the same meaning as they used to have before the new site, so I am kind of suggesting to use the same or similar codes on every future expansion so DoW can actually see which expansions you have and allow you to download and print the scenarios with the offline program...

Hi there,
1) Since it's basically a stripped down firefox using XPCOM, XUL & Javascript, why no Linux binary?

Aenea

I was waiting for that question. Razz

There is no Linux binary because DoW does not want to have to support all Linux distributions/configurations.
Linux has even more different configurations than Windows, and you can see in this thread how difficult it can be to support all configurations of a platform.
HOWEVER, the friendly crew at DoW is willing and able to help any self sufficient, technically savvy Linux user wishing to run the Editor on his favorite platform.
It does work on my machine Very Happy

More on this soon.

Did you try unplugging/turning off the network?

No

Maybe you could try, it might work, and would be helpful information

Ohhhhhhh! Yes please!!!! Now I need to start VirtualBox or vmware to run it Smile

Although I think I might stick to my own editor, that one does run on all platforms Wink (ok, ok, only BattleLore at the moment, but it's meant for all C&C type games...) Some, old, screenshots here: http://www.aeneagames.nl/macha/screenshots/ And it's not just an editor Wink

Anyways, still would like the official 1 running under linux as will many other people I suspect Smile

Cheers,

Alysa

Hi John

GREPath: C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor
armyPath: C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor/chrome/content/Army.ttf
gunplayPath: C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor/chrome/content/gunplay.ttf
sedService: [xpconnect wrapped nsISedService]
fontPath: C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor/chrome/content/Army.ttf
dwLastError: 0
fontPath: C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor/chrome/content/gunplay.ttf
dwLastError: 0

Well the next line SHOULD be:
nbrFonts: 2

If you never saw this, this means that the following line of code in the application is the problem:
::SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST,WM_FONTCHANGE,0,0);

Since this is a broadcast message EVERY open app in your system will get this message. It is possible that one of them does not like it or that one of your font is corrupted.

What I suggest: (in sequential order)
1)
a) reboot windows
b) try launching the editor with no other apps open.

2) check your installed fonts. Maybe removing or disabling temporarily those that might be suspect.

3) remove the files in the editor
C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor\components\sed.xpt
C:\Program Files\Memoir 44 Editor\components\sed.dll

I hope at least on the three will work
