Small World; a comedic remake of Vinci

While I've never played it, I've heard other people talk about how Small World (SW) is a remake of a game called "Vinci".
I did a little research and found some information about the game. It was made in 1999 by the company Descartes Editeur. It was designed by Philippe Keyaerts and is set in Europe where players use civilizations to capture and expand teritory. Here is a link to the Vinci page on BGG.

Vinci is out of print but I found some copies of the game at Noble Knight Games for a mere $85!
Basically it looks like Small World is a modern and humerous remake of the game with some new twists. Does anyone already own Vinci, or at least played it?

I've played it once... it was really good.
I remember thinking at the time it was a simpler version of Advanced Civ.
Deciding when to have an empire decline was pretty key, IIRC.
Unfortunately, it was a while back, so that's about all I got, other than recalling it was a good game.

Everything I've heard about Vinci has been good, so it's nice that they chose a quality game to remake. I still don't understand how the game works because I've never played anything like Vinci and can't figure out the rules from the clues they've given us, but it sounds like fun.

Based upon Vinci:
Each player selects a civilisation composed of two tiles.
In Vinci pair of tiles were drawn from a bag and placed on a price scale. New sets being more expensive than the ones left by previous players.
Each tile has a speficic trait, which means that every civilization will be unique.
What the cost will be in the new game, I don't know (yet).
The large number on each tile is most likely the number of tokens (units/armies) that civilization contains. Starting from one area along the edge of the board, the armies will conquer adjacent areas, always leaving at least one token behind as they attack. Certain terrain will demand additional tokens as do the presence of defenders etc. Very basic (but fun) war game stuff.
The point of spreading out is to score as many VP's as possible (for the number of areas controlled), but the more you spread out the more vulnerable you will be - and it is no fun just to have a stong surviving army civilization sitting in the corner of the board not scroing VP's.
So eventually will your civilisation thin out and begin declining. This is where you yoy may officially declare your civilization 'in decline' - turning the tokens to their greay backs. They will still linger on, giving you VP's as long as they stay on the board, but you can (normally) only have one active civilization and one in decline. So once your new civ. goes into decline will the old one be removed.
Very simple and easy to play, the fun part comes in the variation of the civilizations.
Still play Vinci once or twice a year!

I just played Small World this last weekend and assuming the person who taught me the game got everything correct, the game plays very similar to Vinci. In fact, they seem almost identical to me except that Small World tacks on the fantasy theme of adding "Races" that have powers instead of just having two powers paired together as in Vinci!
Considering that Vinci is out-of-print, I can't wait to get Small World!

I really like Vinci and am still kicking myself for not noticing Smallworld earlier. In my opinion Smallworld even w/ the mini expansions is a much better balanced game. Making the Race Banner and Special Power badges seperate types of tiles to combine I think is the key to the better balance. As much as I like Vinci it had some outright overpowered tile combos. Further play of Smallworld may make me change my opinion but nothing has stood out as being completely over the top yet.
