Merlin's Company experiences? Fri, 16 January 2009 19:49
Hello folks, first post here.

I purchased Shadows over Camelot a mere four days ago and have been enjoying it immensely. My fiance and I have played several games, each controlling two knights, but have won only one game so far (which is fine, I'm glad it isn't too easy). Just played with a third player last night and we had fun; lost, but had fun.

We still haven't played with a traitor, mainly because we want more players and also with more experience, but we really look forward to it.

Well, I'm looking to get the Merlin's Company expansion and was wondering how people feel it enhanced the game's experience and game-play. I've read a lot about how it doesn't contain much but that isn't want matters too me so much. I'm not too concerned about it adding 'pieces' as much as it adding to the 'play'. Smile

So, whats your story about how it affected your game?

It adds another experience, the travel deck (red cards) to the game. I bought it and would buy it again, although I underwhelmed. Shadows gets played very much by my gaming group.

Had our first game with the Merlin's Company expansion last night. As is the case for probably the majority of the games right now, it was just my fiance and I, playing two knights each.

We had a good laugh near the start of the game because we both completely forgot about the travel cards when the knights did their initial move from Camelot. Laughing Embarassed That may have been important in deciding the game though because we ended up losing (from the catapults).

After our initial hiccup in the memory department though, the game was very enjoyable and we both felt that the travel cards really added to the game, in addition to having Merlin giving aid at various quests. Because we forgot all about him as the knights first traveled from Camelot, Merlin spent a fair amount of time in Camelot.

Neither of the new orange knights made it into the game this time around (we pick our knights randomly) but we did get to use some of the others. They provide a wide variety of special abilities that may end up being used in a game so it is certainly nice to have.

The extra white and black cards were nice additions as well. Again, providing more variety and flavour and perhaps even more significantly, larger decks meaning less shuffling.

One of the best parts of the expansion, especially for my fiance, was the Monty Python quotes on a few of the travel cards. They made her very happy!

So, my first experience with Merlin's Company makes me feel that I'm very happy I got it. You don't get a whole lot of 'stuff' for the price, but it definitely adds to an already good game.

Shadows is one our family's favorite games. We play it regularly. There are 5 of us, my wife and 3 children, the youngest being 6. I help her a little. We don't play with the traitor much and we have won many games. We have played several rounds with Merlin's Company and like it. Some of the new knight's powers don't seem very helpful but the travel deck and witches cards make the game more difficult. We love the game because we work together to win as a family. It often calls for sacrifice, patience and cooperation. Good things to teach the family.

I'm looking forward to having kids and them growing up playing games as a family. Shadows over Camelot is certainly a great one to get every one cooperating and thinking as a team.

I played a game last night with my brother at his place (playing two knights each) and it was an intense finish. There were 5 swords each for white and black just after completing the quest for the grail which at one point had all black cards except for the last space which was empty. Shocked

The war against the saxons was one away from a loss, as was the tournament with the black knight. Losing both would lose us the game. Besides that, there were ten catapults and excalibur was lost.

The dragon quest had just begun shortly before and had two black cards as we swarmed it in an attempt for a win. One knight played the 'dragon quest' card which helped out and merlin came there too thanks to a helpful travel card. The black knight quest was lost and we decided to accept it and use the last Merlin card we had to remove a saxon (leaving just two).

My brother played 'clairvoyance' and sorted the cards so that the knight with Lancelot's armour could despose of a dragon card which would at this time end that quest in what we were sure would be a loss for us. On that same knight's next turn he was able to discard another dragon card which bought us the time we needed to get our cards played.

In the end we won the dragon quest and the game in the face of 11 catapults, and the two wars with 3 and 2 invaders present. It was a close and fun game.

Great adventure. We have had some similar ones, it appears we are going to lose and we are able to figure something out or get the card we need and win. Lots of tension, near panic and then victory!

Enjoy. And thank you for saving Camelot one more time.

We got Merlin's Company earlier in the week and have played three games now. The traitor has won each time so far. The travel deck certainly adds a new twist to things and the new witch cards are most unpleasant.

The game is harder now and makes the traitor all the more difficult to figure out. He doesn't have to be obvious at all to influence the game. I was the traitor last night, game went to the final phase, 7 white to 5 black, I was still hidden and won the game with the flip of the two white swords. My oldest son was, shall we say, quite annoyed with me. hehe.

Tonight, we lost three, yes, three black swords due to players being charged while travelling. We completed excaliber, lost a pict war, had the grail down to one open spot, the rest despair cards and lost when the traitor put down siege engine 12. We got spanked. 6 player game, with traitor.

Love the game. We'll play again this weekend...
