Advice - our first OL game Tue, 13 March 2012 21:10
Hello there,

Looking for some advice. I managed to get my friends hooked on Memoir 44 after a few games. Actually, we played some scenarios of the basic game: Saverne Gap, Arracourt and Omaha Beach.

I talked them about the OL version, with teams and so on and they are really interested. We ordered today the OL expansion and I'd like to know if any of the tokens included represents fixed/removable obstacles (wire, sandbags or hedgehogs)

And on the other hand, what scenario should be the first for newbies like us?

Thanks in advance,
Almilcar

The OL expansion does not include obstacles (as far as I recall).

Not knowing what expansions you have, I would play one of the following official scenarios:

Prokhorovka
Bastogne
Peleliu Landings

The first two are pretty simple terrain-wise and balance is okay on these.

Thanks Sgt. Storm.

Checking those to see which is the most suitable for ppl who hardly played a few games of the basic game.

The Overlord expansion comes with the special deck, a rule book, extra dice, and punch sheets of unit tokens.

One way to use them is in conjunction with a Battlemap, which already has all the terrain pre-printed. The unit tokens are an alternative to buying a second base game. (Another option is to use mini poker chips, as they do in Axis & Allies.)

In terms of rules, the simplest standard Overlords are Bastogne, Moyland Wood, and Prokhorovka. (Moyland is great for fast action, because the armies are in contact at the beginning.)

Or, if you can get your hands on a Tigers in the Snow battlemap, that scenario only has a couple of special rules, it's interesting for both sides, and you don't need to do the terrain setup.

Also, on the Memoir website, go to the Rules & Goodies page, and download the original first-edition Overlord rules. It will neatly summarize some details of game play that the subsequent expansion incorporated into the cards.

Good luck, and have fun!

Sam

Thanks to all.

Sam1812: a couple of weeks ago, I showed Memoir 44 to some of the friends we use to play every friday night board games. They got so shocked after some basic scenarios that 2 of them got the spanish version of the core game. So, we can now play OL easily. Waiting for my OL expansion to arrive and voila! Very Happy We will start with Bastogne, following Sgt Storm and your advice.

About "Tigers in the Snow" and "Disaster at Dieppe"... that is like winning the lottery Confused . Almost impossible. I've asked every single online website in Spain with no luck. Swords of Stalingrand and Hedgerow Hell are the BattleMaps I may have.

Regards and thanks.

Disaster at Dieppe is in stock in the US store.
Do you know anyone who you could get it sent to and then they could sent it to you? If they are a M44 online player you can pay them with GI.

Otherwise I have a spare copy or two of Disaster at Dieppe - but shipping from NZ would be expensive Very Happy Rolling Eyes Shocked Rolling Eyes Very Happy

Hello Phread,

I already checked those in the US and the shipping costs are madness. I mean, if the expansion only cost 15$ the shipping is 40$, which makes the deal not worthy at all.

If you'd like to share your spare one with me Razz , I'll be more than pleased Surprised Very Happy (Nah, just kidding!) Thanks for the offer. Something travelling from NZ to SP must be quite expensive, hehe

Kind regards

Sam, those tokens also include obstacles or only units?

Thanks Tank Commander

Then, how we were supposed to play any of the BattleMap with a single copy of the core game + the OL expansion? Are there enough obstacles?

Find some phriends (friends) who also want Disaster at Dieppe. Shipping will not increase in you order multiple copies and it will decrease the average cost.

Living in New Zealand I generally order multiple copies when I order to average out the phreight (freight) cost.

Only some of the obstacles printed on the Battle Maps need to be represented with models to remove them e.g. sandbags or wire. You don't need models for bunkers or hedgehogs.

If you do not have enough wire and / or sandbags represent them with a standin - I think one suggestion was to use small coins or other type of marker that may be avaialble.

In my opinion, you are not missing much if you can't get Disaster at Dieppe. The O/L scenarios are not very compelling (Dieppe is worst yet) and while the half-track and jeep figures are nice to have, they are not utilized well in the scenarios as far as I am concerned (and half-track rules are not well thought out). But, I bought the package twice in order to get the plastic figures.

Its always nice to have more O/L scenarios, but frankly the Tobruk breakout scenario in the breakthrough expansion is much better than the O/L scenario.

Ok, about the shortage of removable/fixed obstacles:

so, I worked it out laying out a template to create my own set of obstacles using a chipboard:

I'll follow the guidelines provided here

Looks good so far! Cool
