Probably there's no good answer for that, and it may seem a tiny negligible thing but this one's still bugging me: Why did they have to make long tickets blue backed?
Sorry if it's old and already discussed, but I just don't understand.

they're meant to be separate at the start, aren't they?

cause im pretty sure you're meant to draw 1 long ticket at the start, along with your short ones.

so, that could be why.

That's only part of the answer...

Yes you have one in your hand at the start...

However, the long tickets cannot be re-drawn... they are not in the 'normal' deck. Think how impractical it would be trying to hide the fact you threw away a big one if they need to be separated from the rest of the game. And you would know if others threw them away from the numbers of them in the box etc.

it also gives players with a good knowledge of tickets a better chance to block...

Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by this. Separated in what way?
Each player is dealt 3 regular tickets and 1 long one in the base game or Europe Expanded, right? It's their decisions whether they keep the long one or not but either way, the decision remains unknown - except when a player keeps them all - for other players (well, at least until they find out after claiming some 'revealing' routes). Now with blue backed long tickets this decision is obvious for everyone.

Correct...but imagine taking time before the start of the game trying to look for those long routes in the pile if all the backgrounds were the same?! It would take forever.

This way, you can shuffle through them quickly looking for the blue background and pull them out before handing them to the players. Razz

Well, you can always find them in the pile because of their blue background. So that wouldn't be a problem. Razz

yes, that is true, but they were designed with being distinctive and separate in mind, so that's the way they are... if you have an issue with that, one thing you could do is order another set of cards and glue a brown-backed card to the blue-backed long ones... if that's your style.

Actually, I thought of that as well but it isn't really worth the 'trouble'. Plus buying another set of cards just for this would be quite silly. Rolling Eyes I just have to get over it.

No need to buy a new set. 1912 reprints all the original routes, doesn't it? So, you should have your entire old set of Europe routes to use for such a purpose if you chose to.

But the old set doesn't include the 6 extra long routes. My only problem was that the long ones in 1912 - while it's awesome to have +6 of them - are blue backed, so a small element of bluffing is now taken out from the game.
But it does not matter that much after all.

If you look at the rules provided with Europa 1912, you now get 4 possibilities to play the game:
1. Europe standard (just as before you bought Europa 1912)
2. Europe expanded: long routes are not used in this one, only the standard ones (old+new)
3. Big Cities Europe: long routes are not used in this one, only BCE cards
4. Mega Europe: you get 2 long routes among the 12 of the game at the start and you have to keep 0 or 1 BEFORE you get the standard routes. In this case, everybody knows how many long routes you keep for the game.

So the back colour has no importance here, although I guess you would like to play "Europe Standard" with the the all 12 long routes! Wink

True, that's what the rules say. However, deciding on keeping long routes before the regular routes are dealt doesn't make sense to me. It gives you too little possibility of thinking in advance and could be really frustrating if the regular routes don't match (at least a little) the long ones.
That being said I found out after playing it multiple times, that it's barely an issue.
