Japanese win this 27% of the time. Besides having phenomenal dice and cards, massed attacks in one flank to reduce opponents artillery has been the only way I have ever won. So pray for those ALLS, BARRAGE, AMBUSHES, BELs and INFANTRY ASSAULTS.

By the way, I wasn't being cynical in my comment earlier. Playing the disadvantaged side of slanted scenarios against a weaker opponent is like a chess player "spotting" a piece to a weak opponent. It makes the game more competitive and more interesting.

Serious.
What could work for the Japanese is moving as much units to their left, and start to cross the river from there.
I know you still need good cards and luck but its better to walk away from those artillerie units.
So an infantry assault sideways used instead of crossing the river could already be a step "forward".

Yes, I agree Sam. I hope I didn't sound cynical either.
Some scenarios are just mathematically difficult to win and it will usually take more than just skill to eke out a victory.
