making battling for ranking in solo play fun Tue, 07 May 2013 00:50
here's my two ideas:

- you can only score points for your ranking ONE time by winning a specific scenario, until you have won ALL scenarios one time: then you will have finished one cycle. After that you can score on them once all over again in the second cycle, and so on. It would be handy to see online which ones you 'did' already and which ones not in your current cycle. Probably nice to get a few ranking points too when you have finished a cycle. Points for losing a scenario are only subtracted for scenarios you did not win already in a cycle, so you can play them just to practice.

- to be able to compete fairly with the people who have high ranking in solo play at this moment, while at the same time respecting their current score: leave all ranking below 1500 as it is and 'condense by ratio' all ranking above 1500 to a ranking between 1500 and 1700 (1700 for the highest ranking player).

What's the issue you are trying to solve?

First of all: congrats with your first place in solo play ranking, Phread! Thumbs Up

Here are my two issues, the second is only an elaboration on hearsay:

1. You need to play only a few scenarios that you can always win for dozens of time to end up highest in solo play ranking. Honestly speaking, to me that is quite boring. (But I noticed that you have a way to win The Meat Grinder as Allies too, congrats with that achievement, Phread! I will look into your games, when I cannot find the solution myself Very Happy )

2. DOW is not making enough money on people who gain a high solo play ranking by playing only or mainly the free scenarios Laughing And then, because they dont make so much money on the game, they are not so interested to work on it, the poor fellars. Anyway that's how I understood the mechanics of DOW from info on the forum. Wish my boss would accept the same attitude from me on my work Twisted Evil
.
My suggestions create a win-win situation for everybody, I think even for the high ranking people at solo play at this moment, for if they can hold their position in the 'cycle' system, it means a lot more than now (at least to me).

Thanks for your reply.

Making players play particular scenarios is not - to date - the way DoW has worked in general for ranking points.

Players have to win all scenarios from both sides to gain promotion (officer rank).

Would forcing players to play a range of scenarios enhance or discourage solo play. With all due respect I'd suggest it would discourage play.

Similarly I don't think your proposal would generate much more income for DoW as I think it would discourage solo play.

I play solo, a lot at the moment, for 3 reasons. To try different strategies on a scenario, because there aren't opponents willing to play in the lobby, to fill in time when I don't have time for 2 player battles.

I play the free solo scenarios because they are available, when filling in time they don't cost me. As you noted I also play solo in scenarios which aren't free.

My high ranking in solo play probably reflects my feeling bored with the "standard" scenarios, current achievements and lack of further promotion. DoW could fix this with another software release including bug fixes and enhancements. That ball is in their court.

Personally I don't think the solo ranking counts for much, and this system isn't broken. (The 2 player ranking system needs work though).

Thanks for raising the issue.

That is also my main concern: the 2 player ranking sytem. I have been thinking about a formula already, but the main issue is that even if you win a match of two games, you easily loose ranking points. Everybody can understand that this need to be fixed, then the formula is just sealing it, that comes second only. I bought the game for 60 euro, but because of this and the lack of follow up on questions to DOW, leads me to play again Panzer General III, which I play with my stepson in a team against the AI, because PBEM never really worked and against each other is not working either because of the modern safety measures in datatransmission.
Here is the latest download for Panzer General III, with like 98% of the immense work done on it for free by lovers of the game. https://rapidshare.com/#!download|905p2|1030313829|PanzerGen eral3ScorchedEarthInstaller2.0.exe|462642|0|0|1|referer-1B16 F51890272378DDD256B376C5180B The 'Italy' equipment set fits all campaigns.
