Silence... Wed, 10 July 2013 21:23
... ...

The forum is as dead as its ever been.

This wouldn't be due to LACK OF UPDATES TO THE BOARD GAME LATELY would it!?

Sorry for shouting.

I get the feeling this game is no longer as high on DOW's priority list as it once was. Time to move on to other games I suppose. The battle maps were a nice thing to look forward to at one time. They were supposed to be released quarterly. I guess that idea is dead.

Been playing Napoleonics lately and that's really cool. Guess I'll blow my money on expansions to that game.

I thought it was just me, but I see others thinking that the activity on the forum is extremely low. Just a few new threads in the last weeks. Surprisingly, at least. I thought summer would give it a boost.

Hopefully, as news about new content comes to light, the activity will increase. I really hope so.

Probably new projects (Relic Runners, Small World) are the main focus nowadays.

Just remember folks that much of the activity had to do with questions and answers about gameplay. With the advent of the new and improved FAQ, a lot of questions are now answered off line. Just wait until the next product release comes out and there will be more chit chat. It is also summer when folks have less routine and spend more time outside with their familia. So I am sure the silence is only temporary.

Actually, if you analyze and delve into the Days of Wonder official news, since Jan, the 15th, there is only one single record talking exclusively about Memoir'44: it was the Open de France 2013 report. Nothing about upcoming new content.

The shocking and worrying part is that I have read in here that DoW is not fond on giving details regarding its projects. However, I read almost every week about other games and projects related to them: mainly for Ticket to Ride and Small World.

I hope this will change in the near future and the policy will be the same for all the games.

Anyway, it is summer time: I have to finish Operation Epsom scenario tomorrow evening and Friday we will stat over Barbarossa... So, let's have fun!

In truth, its been 13 months since the announcement of a new addition to the Memoir '44 board game. I would wager this is the longest interval between expansions/updates since the game hit the shelves (well actually between announcements).

I think this points to more emphasis being placed on newer games and electronic games, most of which don't interest me, for one reason or another (not that I don't like video games and board games of all kinds in general).

I would love to write historical scenarios that could be published by DOW. I would be able to use all the new units, rules and topography. The ones I write for my online tournaments are restricted to what will work. I'd do it for free.

The publication could be 10 or so pages themed to a specific theater or to a campaign.

I guess it's just wishful thinking....

Eric,

if you are able to do that, the best option in my opinion is to have it done and then show it to them. I can help with the layout, etc.

Cheers.

Don't lose heart just yet. The silence about Memoir '44 expansions does not mean they aren't working on anything. Personally, I wouldn't just want them to put out some random stuff just because it's been a certain amount of time...I would want them to take their time and create a good-quality expansion.

DoW has been working on (and continues to work on) lots of other projects including their new Big Box game, the Small World Kickstarter (including the crazy Designers Edition of Small World and the upgrade for the digital version), and other projects we don't even know about.

I don't think the game is being abandoned, if that's what people are afraid of. Smile

I'm not sure why the DoW policy of not talking about things until they are ready is very shocking or worrying...they have been following this same policy for many years now. They have been announcing information about Small World and Ticket to Ride these days because those projects are ready to be announced. This is not a change in their system, it just indicates that they have been working on other projects and that those projects are nearly completed.

Memoir '44 is not being treated differently than their other games, it just doesn't have an expansion ready yet.

Jesse,

is simply my opinion, after reading some threads in the M44 Online Forum. Not intended to offend anybody.

However, I do think that a sustained silence is a bit worrying (13 months is a lot, but again it is my opinion), along with no updates neither for the Editor nor for the Online Game.

I used "shocking" in the sense of disturbing, not in any other sense. My apologies for the misunderstanding. Probably I misused the word there.

I think that Ticket to Ride and Small World 2 are catching all the attention nowadays and probably all the resources. That is a fact and the news/content generated regarding these two games are there.

Should I be worried? Probably not, I'm just rambling. But I would not like to be marked as the "ranting guy".

If some of us are worried is because we would like to see new content or news regarding what's going on... or better to say we would not like to see the game discontinued or something like that.

Hopefully 2014 would be way much better.

Regards and sorry If I have offended Jesse.

No offense was taken. Sorry if I gave that impression in my previous posts! Confused

From the time I've been hanging around watching DoW and enjoying their games, I've always found that they have tricks up their sleeves that I would not expect. But like any good magician, they are careful about their timing. They aren't going to hint about the cool new thing that's on the way, or about that expansion they are working on, or the new big box game they are producing. Instead, they suddenly reveal what they have been doing just before it is ready.

It's taken a little bit of time to get used to this method, but I think it works for DoW. I know that some people would prefer a long list of production plans with tentative dates that stretch years into the future, but I prefer the mystery.

Personally, I haven't used up the fun that the current Memoir '44 products has to offer, so it's amazing to me that other people are hurting for a new expansion. Maybe everyone can play a lot more Memoir '44 than I can! Smile But DoW has promised that it has plans for the future of this game and there's no reason to think they would lie about that.

I look forward to the magical reveal!! Very Happy

I'm hoping to start bringing Memoir '44 back to the gaming table more often. The equipment pack really left a sour taste in my gaming groups mouth. I know some really love it, but my group was really put off by having all the pieces white. Not to bring up issues of the past (Equipment pack) but hopefully the "silence" by DoW is them retooling to bring back the greatness of Memoir'44; hoping for a great 2014.

Bring on those army packs and Overlord battlemaps! and how about an Overlord Campaign?!?

Hey! I just replaced all my M44 infantry with spare Axis & Allies infantry, and added my Tide of Iron armor, vehicles and weapons; and painted the whole 900+ (closer to 1000) pieces!

So I'm still here and having a blast with all the stuff! Cool I full well intend on conttinuing playing the paint and varnish right off these pieces for as long as I can! It sure is a great way to get my kids involved in something that I can wind up teaching them about some really special people who did something special for them before they were even born!

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but for as long as this game is around, irregardless of what products may or may not come down the road, there will be one really old, greatful guy (for all those who never made it back home), here in Columbus Ohio, who will be soldiering on with Memoir 44 no matter what! Very Happy

Opps! Sorry I had a short rant in the middle of your M44 thread...

PS-Godspeed for a safe return (hopefully this year) to the men and women of the 26th MEU, and all of our service members overseas.Smile

Re:Silence... Fri, 12 July 2013 16:43
I think a lot of times interest in games is sparked by a larger cultural interest in the era or subject, too - for example, the flood of WW2 movies we had in the late 90s/early 2000s. Seemed like there was a major, epic ww2 movie out every month, some good, some bad - Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Thin Red Line, Wind Talkers, Enemy at the Gates, etc.

In the wake of those movies, there was a rise in cultural interest, awareness, and curiosity about ww2, and we saw the advent of M44, Axis & Allies miniatures (and several theater- or campaign-specific variations of the original boardgame), and ToI to name just a few.

But that cultural interest has waned. We haven't had an epic WW2 film in awhile - even the films we do get tend to be focused on very small operations, units, or politics (Vaklyrie, Red Tails, Downfall, etc.) or satire (Inglorious Basterds). Flags of Our Fathers, Pacific, and Letters from Iwo Jima probably came closest, but even those were not box office blockbusters (maybe because Americans have always been less interested in the Pacific Theater). There may be some exceptions I'm forgetting, but I think the general trend holds.

I wonder if some of that interest won't be rekindled in the next couple of years with the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Bulge, VE and VJ Days, etc.

No I'm just thinking logistically and logically. DoW can't please all the people all the time and I can see with the marketing opportunity of 2014 that M'44 would naturally take a back seat in 2013.

I'd be happy to be wrong, but I'm also happy with what we've got.

I don't see the grand marketing opportunity of the 70th anniversary. Its just a number and not even a really good one. Personally, it means nothing to me. Why not wait for 75th anniversary?

But if I've learned anything, its that I generally have the opposite feeling from others in these types of things. A marketing expert should listen to me and do the opposite.

But, if there's some grand remake of the game planned, I'd prefer it be released as soon as possible, while the game is still relatively hot, not on some arbitrary date.

But I can wait. I might lose interest, but I can wait. There are plenty of other game companies vying for my money.

Well, I still have to play many of the official scenarios from the various releases I have bought. I am not worried that there has not been a new release nor an announcement of one.

I have invested a bit of money in this system and intend on playing for a while yet no matter what.

The only disappointment I had with the EE was I would have preferred full blown separate French and Italian Army Pack expansions.

But I say game on....

I don't have a problem with the latest threads and posts in M'44 English and M'44 Online.

->If people are downloading the new FAQ and don't have problems with it, then great.

->I just finished (was eliminated) in the latest M'44 Online / BGG tournament, which involved 36 players.

->I have a VASSAL ladder match in progress for Sword of Stalingrad, so feel I'm getting my money's worth after buying that Battle Map last Summer. Leading up to it I've played several scenarios using the Urban Combat cards (including Pavlov- Hero of the Soviet Union, and Mamayev Kurgan from that Pack) and enjoyed them.

->I've taken an interest in the new Italian High Command Rules from the Equipment Pack, which I discussed here. I've played 3 matches plus 1 & 1/2 games this week, and enjoyed taking Italian's cards away, while doing my best as Italians when my cards are discarded.

->I do think there hasn't been enough chatter about the Equipment Pack (I don't own it or the bonus sheets, yet.) I would have thought people would say what they like and take a stab at making a scenario and posting it, using some more of those figures. Unfortunately, it didn't come out when I was playing Winter Wars and Breakthrough, as I likely would have bought it to learn the rules and use the figures.

->I'd play more Online if #1 they fixed the bugs with existing scenarios, and #2 they added features to SFTF on a regular basis, (month #1: British tanks can be set to move 3, month #2: bunkers on hills block los, month #3: railroad tracks stop tanks, month #4: cemeteries ignore flag, etc.)

->For face-to-face play I'd like to see (I would buy) a Great Tank Battles expansion. Breakthrough was too big (deep) and time-consuming. The existing board is too small, and I've gotten tired of being backed up to the baseline. For example, I think Rzhev would be more fun if the Russians had another row behind their current basline units. I'd like to see an attachment of 13 hexes (and medal spots) you can put on the board to add a row to the Axis' side, and one you'd add to the Allies' side. Then a booklet of big tank battles that would use the existing figures with maps that are 12x13 or 13x13 (instead of existing 11x13). I also think it would be OK to have some scenarios use more regular figures than in one base game. I discovered that the Operation Market Garden OL Battle Map was 2-deeper than normal, so more of the same!

The online forum has slowed down quite a bit as well, The board game is still huge and has a lot of diversity but the online game is still stuck with the same rules for about 2 years now and being so static players get bored and move onto other interests.
We are the die-hards but a lot of other players have moved on to other games.

Just to clarify, I am not necessarily asking for a large expansion. What I miss are the small additions, particularly the battle maps, which kept things interesting. The additional overlord scenarios from the battle maps were just the ticket to while away the summer/winter doldrums.

Also, I don't think its necessary that the battle maps, were they to be continued, have plastic figures either. However, it might be easy to sneak in few of the new figures that were made available in the equipment expansion, or some that were left out, such as Allied tank destroyers.
