Operation overlord Thu, 29 August 2013 23:41
I am relatively new to memoir 44 and just purchased some extras, one of them "Sword of Stalingrad" only to find out I really need operation overlord, when I go to purchase this I discover the English version is out of print, thanks a bunch!!! Why is it out of print? Will it come back in to print in English? If so when?
Thanks

There has been talk about it being released again sometime, But that dosnt help you now. You can still play swords of stalingrad if you have at least 2 base games (using the US as russians), if you want the russian figures then you will also need 2 eastern front expansions. Just shuffle both decks from the 2 base games together. I think the rules are up online somewhere for overlord.

Here is a link to the first edition of the OL rules.

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/content/rules/

I would recommend you download both as I believe there is some info in the 1st edition which was not included in the Overlord Expanison rules (which should be considered an extension of the 1st Ed rules, not as a total replacement).

Operation Overlord is the weakest expansion. I'd just as soon do without it. Even if you had it, some battle maps say you still need to add coins or something for wire, sandbags, etc. Ther deck looks pretty worthless too. It's just a double-deck with some symbols, but they didn't clarify Pincer Move, General Advance, and Recon-in-Force, which gives us headaches when my opponents play them incorrectly. It also comes with no scenarios! The rules aren't too clear for adding rules from expansions (see below).

As long as you (and your opponent) have two games, you should be OK. We have two sets for pieces (although I've started using two of my expansions for figures, for quicker cleanup). I also have the BreakThrough deck, and have put both decks in card covers. It's fairly straightforward to add 60 of the BT cards like this into the regular deck, then separate them after the game.

If they do bring OL expansion back, they need to update the rules to accommodate all the expansions and their rules and a better sequence of play. Then they need to add more cardboard or plastic pieces for wire, sandbags and hedgehogs. It could do with some battle maps, or boards, included too. The card deck could be improved too, getting rid of Pincer, General and RiF and replacing them with Any-4 or Any-3 cards. Also, Artillery Bombard is pretty useless as Field General cards, so should be Commander-in-Chief cards.

In the meantime, I wrote-up a sequence summary and posted it on boardgamegeek, and have it as a Word file in My User Pages.

The other alternative is to play online with Vassal.

Wow, thanks everyone, really helpful answers. I shall download the rules and the guide mentioned and perhaps invest in a second main game.

I have the Operation Overlord expansion, and it's really good if you don't want to spring for a 2nd base game. In my opinion the overlord deck you get is essential if you are going to play overlord games. You also get more dice like with a 2nd base game. You will run out of sandbags and wire a bit, but I make my own with printed graphics and some felt.

We do play a lot Overlord in our gamegroup and I think that the Overlord deck is a must. We also had to build our own set of printed obstacles, but that is not much of a burden.

Many of us early adopters of the game had no choice and got along fine before the overlord expansion was released. You can use two standard decks shuffled together and its not that confusing - its not ASL or something.

That said, having the overlord deck is convenient because of the symbols printed on the cards to make it easier to indicate which player FG or CinC can use the card.

By the way, you can buy extra decks of cards from the online store (say if you wanted to substitute some other figures - e.g., risk) - for the figures needed to supplement the base set.

But, if you're like the rest of us, you're hooked and therefore a second base set is essential.

I like the overlord expansion because it makes it real clear who plays the cards and where they can be played, right on the cards!I also added my own Overlord help sheet that you can download from here: http://cdn.daysofwonder.com/uploads/userpages/272628/_5568.p df
I highlight the part about tactics cards that are underlined about how when tactics cards show a number of units, or units of a given type, those may be used to order from either or both of the sections under that field general's control.
That seems to remove confusion.

Welcome to Overlord.. much forgotten, much appreciated by me.
for a real thrill, play overlord with two players, it's the way I almost have to play. (small town, small gaming group ie 3)

I hope this helps!
