Small World 2 - Available Now in the iPad App Store Thu, 12 September 2013 11:14
More than 3 years ago, Small World was the first digital board game to ship on a tablet, the same day the iPad shipped! Today, we are proud to introduce Small World 2, a from-the-ground-up rewrite and massive update to our best-selling board game. We've added 3-5 player maps, 2 different online modes, pass'n-play and local play, along with the new-to-digital Be Not Afraid... expansion and much, much more.

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/wp-content/dow-uploads/2013/09/SW2-release-1EN.jpg

Small World 2 is bigger and better than its predecessor in every way. A host of new features await you in this colossal update:

  • New 3, 4 and 5 player maps to conquer, in glorious full retina mode!
  • Play Online games in real-time or turn-by-turn, with friends & strangers from the world over; and Local games over Bluetooth or Wifi
  • Playing with friends online is easy with extensive Game Center, Facebook, and Days of Wonder Online Buddies integration
  • Solo Play against up to 4 built-in AI
  • Pass'n Play with up to 5 live players on a single iPad
  • 20 additional Races & Special Powers to master through in-app purchases of Cursed!, Grand Dames and the new to digital version of Be Not Afraid...
  • Online, Solo & Face to Face scores with daily, weekly, and perpetual rankings
  • A Comprehensive Small World Encyclopedia detailing all rules, races, special powers, icons & more!

For existing Small World iPad players who've been clamoring for these new features, we've got great news - Small World 2 is available to you as a free upgrade - the largest one ever available for any board game! Once updated, you'll be able to add the brand new to digital Be Not Afraid... expansion via in-app purchase. With 5 additional Races and 5 new Special Power badges it's time to welcome the Barbarians, Homunculi, Leprechauns, Pixies and Pygmies to the Small World party!

Woo hoo! Such great news. One question that's come up on BGG is what happens when your timer runs out on async games and you haven't played a turn. Does the AI play it for you?

Speaking of which, if you are playing a real time online game and someone quits, does the AI take over?

Feature requests - should they go in a new thread? People are already asking for timer options between 4 and 48 hours. I think 24 hours would be good, as it'd still leave plenty of time for sleep and working in your turn, but it'd avoid leaving your hanging for two whole days.

There was also a request for being able to start a random turn-by-turn game with X number of players.

Can't wait to spend some time with this tonight.

I second the request for the ability to make an Asynch game with Random players!

I can make them now with people in my friends list - which is fine once I have more friends in there. But - I rarely can sit down and play a full game in one sitting. So it would be VERY valuable to me to just be able to create a 5 player game that is tagged as Asynch - and when it's full we GO! (I realize this would take work on your end to make work... but hey! please!) Smile

Question on the turn timer. What happens to the game when a player is kicked? If there are 5 of us playing and one person goes over the timer - does AI take over? Or are they just "surrendered" - or do they turn into just "in decline" tokens and we just can take them over etc?

Also - The game so far is great - thanks for all the good work!

Also - How do expansions work?

I believe I read somewhere that if I have the KickStarter races - which I do - and others don't - that as long as I have them and start the game they will be available to everyone in the game.

A. Is that true?

B. Is that the same for all the other expansions? If I have them - make the game - and do the invites - can others play without them being purchased by them?

Yes, the expansions are "shareable". Only one person needs to have bought them.

Pleasantly surprised that this was a free upgrade from the original! Thanks!

Is there an official place to submit bugs/feature requests?

On my first game I noticed a few things:

Berserk (bug/missing feature): A dialog pops up at the beginning of your turn asking if you want to roll or decline but you are blocked from looking at the map and available races which is very important when deciding if you want to decline.

RFE: Would be nice to see how many coins each person made last turn (at a glance).

Wouldn't really match up to the cardboard game if you could, would it? I suppose you could keep a piece of paper handy and keep a running total of scores, just like you could in the cardboard game. Of course, doing that in person would likely get you disinvited from future plays. Very Happy

True, but if you look away for a moment when the turn animations are happening it is easy to miss, and it isn't like at the board game where you can easily ask: "How much did you get again?"

Yeah, what I'd prefer is more being able to tell it to advance when I wanted it, rather than when it does.

But again, the same thing can be true of a in-person game. You ask me "How much did you get again?" in person and I'm likely to say "Some non-zero number. Or possibly zero." Twisted Evil

That would be a good solution. Right now it just feels a bit rushed, you need a moment to to study their move and let it sink in.

Can't download the app. Sad
The download starts but stalls after a few seconds.

For me it took quite a while and the progress bars weren't too helpful. I'd also check your network. I can't imagine how it'd have anything to do with DoW. Should affect anything you download from the app store if you're having problems.

Jepmn, you were absolutely right. After a long while, the download continued and finished.
Thanks for your reaction.
I hope you have lots of fun with SW2-iPad.
