FUSION CUP tiebreaker comments Mon, 20 January 2014 15:35
I am getting ready to post the full set of rules for FUSION Cup, and plan to do so by the end of Friday, January 24. At this time, All rules will remain the same as 2013. The one potential exception is the rule on the tiebreaker during a knock-out round clash. So I am creating this thread as the final note for opinions and suggestion on that one issue.

Current rule is: (called option A)
In case of a tie, First tiebreaker is clashes won, then matches won, then points won, then TAG result, then AAT result, then US/EU result, then USA result.

Two other suggestions have been given:

Option B

Line ups are sent in by Captains with each match listed in ranking of importance. Then Match results are assigned as Win = 1, Tie = .5, Loss = 0. Then we obtain a score using the formula,
The result of ranked match 1 is multiplied by 4
The result of ranked match 2 is multiplies by 3
The result of ranked match 3 is multiplies by 2
The result of ranked match 4 is multiplies by 1

The team with the highest sum wins.

Option C
For a tie in the KO round, winner will be decided by captains submitting 1 player (or team if tag) who can be free to play a match before the last day of the KO round (or on the last day if possible). Captains of the two tied teams can discuss which game of the 4 types will be used, with the deciding match being a 1 TAG game or best of 3 games tiebreaker for the other 3 types. By mutual agreement of the two captains, we will use the game of their choice. If they cannot agree, then the US board will be used.

My order of preference would be:

A (or something similar to A) is better for me.

Then B could be ok, but I fear that it will not be a real tiebreaker.

I don't like C. It is messy to set it up and moreover it is uner risk of taking time to be applied.
I would suggest to not use USA map for a tie-breaker. The idea of Fusion Cup is to give more reward to the other maps that have less tournament-time during the year.

Same as Qorlas, definitely A on my side.

Second choice is B.

Maybe it could be possible to introduce a 5th match just for KO ?

Asia/Swiss ? 2USA/2Asia/2Swiss ? USA/Asia ?

And after that :

Just in place of choosing any game already played to make the decision

well as presented - makes no sense.

Option B is really:

In case of a tie, First tiebreaker is clashes won, then matches won, then points won, then look at lineup sent in by Captains with each match listed in ranking of importance.

Only difference from A is all 4 matches count towards tie breaker rather than TAG being most important then AAT...

My post was probably not clear, but of course the first tie-breakers in all cases have to be :

in case of a tie, First tiebreaker is clashes won, then matches won, then points won,

and then...A or B or C or...

While this is a great suggestion, I do not think we have enough time to implement this for this year. Personally I would like to see all clashes move to 5 matches. But that may be better for 2015 since teams are formed & forming with an expectation of 4 matches per week.

As a side note, one difficulty in getting players for teams is reality that 1/2 of the competitive players seem to only play USA board. So while I love FUSION, my guess is more players may like to see 5th match be added as USA board, maybe even using a different twist to the multi with TAG. Example, TAG uses combined multi score, maybe team winner of 5th match would be the team that has the player with high score in a multi game, irregardless of 2nd teammate.
