tips for introducing new players to M'44 battles Sat, 01 February 2014 09:07
I was intro'ing M'44 to a friend the other day and realizing how nice it is online that all your ordered units have a clear border around them we started putting a battle star or something similar on the units we were ordering. Helped to remind each of us which ones were activated, especially for the newbie, and for me a few times Wink

Any other helpful tips you have for bringing in new cadets, comrades?

I'm a teacher who has used Memoir '44 in my elementary classrooms (as low as 3rd grade) so I have a few tips on my User Page. You might find something useful:

Wow! Rasmussen, that is fountain of great resources. I'm gonna go camp out on your user page for a while!

Thanks!

We started out using dice to mark the units we ordered. Remove them when they can't fire after moving and leave them if still able to fire. After firing remove them

BUT!
At the Belgium open we got markers made specifically for this purpose. One side has footprints/bootprints on them the other Crosshairs. They work as follows: Mark units with the "footprints side" up after moving if the unit cannot battle remove the chip otherwise flip them over to the crosshairs side and remove after firing.

Of course you can use any chip with two different sides (and we did in other games) but these look rather nice. Smile

I'm glad you like it! Let me know if there's something you would find useful that you don't see there and I might be able to make it to add to the list of things I already have. Smile

I found some nice small standup plastic discs in dfferent colors (from a vendor at WBC)which I labeled so:

Green "Move" / placed next to any ordered units and removed after each unit moves

Red "Fire" / placed next to units which can fire after the Move phase

Orange / Fire +1 / placed on any unit which benefits from any +1 fire effect from a card

Yellow "Target" / placed next to the current targeted unit

White / "Air Power" / placed next to each unit to be targeted by Air Power and removed after each attack

Black / "Barrage" / marks the unit targeted by the Barrage card

I also have marker sets for BEL which consist of two Move and one Fire +1 pieces. All three are placed with a BEL ordered unit and removed at the completion of each step of the BEL actions.

I have used them for a number of years and they work very well. They are almost a must have for OL games.

Rasmussen,

I've found a small typo in your document: Teaching Memoir '44 Tutorial

Forest - When moving in, everyone has to stop; the men and tanks have to slow down and pick their way through the trees. When infantry attacks a unit in the trees they get a -1 battle roll; the trees give protection from bullets, although the attacking infantry can still easily aim. When armor attacks a unit in trees they get a -2 battle roll; the trees offer protection and it’s hard for the tanks to see their targets. Infantry can shoot into trees with full power; they shoot over and into the trees.

I think you meant artillery.
