VASSAL OVERLORD SUN. FEB. 9th Fri, 07 February 2014 17:10
Hi all,

I would like to conduct a Vassal Overlord game this Sunday at 9 A.M. Eastern Standard time U.S. That would be 2 or 3 in the afternoon for you across the pond guys. I know this is short notice but I have some time Sunday morning. I would like to get at least 4 players. A full compliment of 8 would be great.

We would be playing either 'Push to the Roer' or 'Battle of Bloody Gulch'. Both of these scenarios were written by me. I have them posted on the SFTF page for you to look over. If you want to play please select one that interests you.

To get the game started quickly please read the special rules ahead of time. Any questions before game time ask them here. Also, I will be selecting the overall commanders and the FGs. If you don't want to be considered for the overall commander let me know.

Finally, since there will be reinforcements in both battles the following will be the protocol for the overall commander:
1. Declare the appropriate reiinforcements and FG who will be getting them on the open chat. Delete them from the reinforcement chart.
2. Hand out cards to FGs.
3. FG who receives reinforcements uses unit drop down box to place them in the appropriate section.
4. All flanks then move their units and follow regular Overlord rules.

By setting all these parameters ahead of time, we will get the game underway more quickly. I hope you'll join me. All players won't be sitting around. It should be fun.

Eric

Eric,

Sounds like fun. I usually work 10am-6pm MST, but sure I could play for a bit or depending if I am CinC, then game over quickly! LOL!

I will try and look them over as best I can and be prepared! If not, I will fire blindly and hope I hit something!

Tony, John,

I'll be there before nine to set things up. If no one else wants to play, you guys against me. We'll play 'Push to the Ruer'. You can decide which side you want before we start. The Germans get reinforcements and the Allies have Hobart's Funnies. See you tomorrow.

Do so, it was 5 hours of fun!

Thanks Eric for the scenario and falling under my mighty foot! Wink

As always it was great fun, but with the score 17-16 in the end it was exciting too!

Great battle!

Allied CinC: sam1812
FGs: L Jeronimon, C sam1812, R Quit2

Axis CinC: Tank Commander
FGs: R LooneyLlama, C Tank Commander, L Gonzalan

We were on a huge roll early in the game, on both the left and right flanks. Quit2 followed my instruction to knock out the Tank Destroyer by playing his Assault Right in the other section, advancing his infantry, and eventually capturing the far-right medal town (which would be vital later). Along the way, his engineer rolled a pair of grenades against the mobile artillery in the woods.

But on turn 5, seven German reinforcements came, in force. They would wipe out 4 flamethrowers, 2 engineers, and an infantry and mobile artillery on our opposite flank within 3 turns. Their TFH with 11 orders and a productive Firefight certainly helped them.

Extra credit to Jeronimon when we Counter-Attacked the TFH, for killing a Tiger and flagging the 1-fig mobile arty off the board with a 1d roll from the town.

The 2-way medal town was a big bone of contention during the second half of the game, but on the German 9th turn, they didn't take it back out of our hands. As the German score increased, I was able to take away two of their majority turn-start objectives.

On our 10th turn, as we took back the turn-start medal on our left, the game advanced to 16-16. We played "It's Now or Never," and Quit2 finished off the 88. If that hadn't worked, we would have rolled 3d against a 1-fig infantry on the left.

Our side never wound up using our reinforcements.

A great battle!

10 turns, 17-16 medals, 62-64 figures.

We surprising had 6 people show up for the scenario. They all stayed for all 5 hours! Thanks to Tony, John, Sam, Jeroen and Wim for giving my scenario a chance. It is always a pleasure to play with these gentlemen. As to the battle, as Jeroen stated, it ended up 17-16 Allies. All players were involved in the outcome. It was very tense throughout. Sam gives you the recap above. That is all I could ask for. Well, I could ask for me to know the rules better. I made a few blunders. Sam and John were the overall commanders and they both played their cards like a virtuoso violinist. All section commanders, except me at the end, played really well. Very, very, close game. Let's do it again soon!!

Ah for want of a tank or grenade on the last attack on that 1 fig center tank and it would have been ours.

A pretty agonizing battle for me as I had to watch both flanks get hammered turn after turn. I knew I had to try and keep a few good section cards for those T 5 reinforcements but often had to burn some of them to try and stem the tide before both flanks were crushed. Due to high Allied unit density, the Assault cards are much more deadly in their hands than for the Germans. The combo of Elite Infantry, combat eng infantry and flame tanks appeared almost unstoppable.

It seems like we were always a step behind and missing key kills along the way came back to haunt us. I just did not have the orders early on to deal with all the problems on the board and not being able to move up the panzers hurt. Having both M & M cards in my hand did not help matters much and one was a total bust which could have prevented a three medal gain by the Allies. Losing the Perm medal over there proved to be a bit of a shock.

My play of TFH was good but it was followed by back to back Allied TFHs.

Losing all three medal objectives while the Allies gained one in the end game was a huge factor.

As to the reinforcments, they certainly helped our cause and had our front line troops caused a bit more damage before then, we probably would have prevailed. The allies could not really afford to give us a medal for bringing on their tanks or arty. Their infantry probably would have been of questional value.

Well Eric, don't beat yourself up about it. The main two "gafs" were your guys running into the wire and wanting to fire. That was a one die shot (50%) at a medal. That could have been it, that's true. But knowing the rules you could not have acted differently with that one. You would have to go into the wire to get out next turn for two dice.

The lonely guy running out of town was a worse mistake to Maine, but in the end it was not what cost you the match Wim and Sam got the last medal on the other side.

You live and learn. Wink

Yes, Eric, you MUST beat yourself up about it, specifically brow-beating!! Also, you must give yourself 50 lashes with a wet noodle! And on top of that, you must also run your fingernails over a chalkboard!! Laughing Once that is done and only then will you have learned and be blunder free!! Of course, you could always start a tour and be known as "The Blunder from Down Under!" Laughing

All in good fun of course, was very fun and worth the 5 hours of playing and the 3 hours of work I took time off to enjoy the OL!! Cool

As John stated, a dice or 2 here and there, maybe hold a permanent, majority or temp obj and we come out on top, but fun was the thing and a good battle and time had by all and except for my brief disappearing act and that of my ARTY on my flank....enjoyed it all!!

Thanks to all for killing 5 hours and making my morning worth getting up and playing at 7am!!

I think mistakes are part of the game. I made an error with trying to bring on reinforcemnts with the Inf Assault card, but luckily had a section card to do so in hand. That was after I read that special rule too.

I also missed an early illegal TG after an Allied infantry moved into the dragoon's teeth then used TG to enter the town.

Also knowing how those Turn Start temp medals worked surprised me a bit. I did not know you could get the medal at the start of the turn and then leave it in the same turn and still get credit for the medal.

But all in all I was happy with the way I handled the CinC duties and how my FGs played and the scenario in general.

I just want to reiterate how much fun I had playing last Sunday. Everyone stayed focused for 5 hours!! Amazing. Mistakes, in my opinion, were very few(mostly by me) but, what the heck, I had a blast. It was snowing like h*** here and I felt like you guys came over to my house to enjoy the game. It's too bad I couldn't offer you some hot chocolate and lunch.

Anyway, winter here has been absolutely brutal and I have most Sunday mornings free. I have my other two Overlords, 'Crossing the Volturno Line' and 'Counterattack at Carentan' ready to go. I'm pretty sure they would play just as well as 'Push to the Ruer'. Looking forward to our next meeting.

Eric

By the way, if you think that was a long scenario, you really get your money's worth with Stalingrad, Perdition. 20 medals for victory! Wim has it on the choose scenario list.

Eric,

I prefer OVERsights to mistakes and yes, I did feel like you had invited us OVER to your house for a game amongst friends and foes alike!! In the beginning, they OVERwhelmed us just a bit, sure we were hoping they would OVERextend their units no doubt and by doing so, maybe we would OVERcome their OVERly hot start or that perhaps their OVERconfidence would come back to bite them!!

They just kept the pressure on OVER and OVER again, but OVERall, yes, much fun was had during this OVERlord!!

Don't like repeating myself OVER and OVER again, but the you get the picture and perhaps next time maybe we can try more cOVERt operations!
